Odd graphics use by VPX

Jonners55 wrote on 9/9/2020, 11:54 AM

Hello

I recently got VPX having previously used Movie Studio. I use both for editing 1080p mp4 at 60fps files primarily. Movie Studio handled this without problem but I like the additional features of VPX. VPX has however been exhibiting some very odd behavior. Once I have a few mp4 files in, say a minute or so, playback in preview becomes a bit chopy and seems to get worse the more it is used. However the really odd thing is that without fail, eventually VPX will start causing GPU0, the internal graphics, to constantly spike to 100% use, down to zero and then back up to 100%. This causes VPX to freeze and eventually the whole PC to freeze. This only happens when VPX is used.

In Task Manager it looks like the attached screens. It almost seems that the graphics get overloaded somehow and this then causes the behavior above.

I think it is something to do with how VPX uses the internal graphics of my intel CPU. Perhaps they can't handle it and some how I need to tell VPX not to use the internal graphics - I've tried different settings in the file, settings, program, display options area (standard mode, compatibility mode, alternative mode) to do that but all seem to ultimately end in the same issue. I am using an intel i5 4690K (HD4600 internal graphics) and an NVidia GTX 1070, 16GB memory and Win 10 if relevant, though as I say Movie Studio had no problem with the same projects.

I'm really just looking for any advice on how to configure the settings to avoid this behavior, if possible, so I can use the additional features in VPX.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hi

. . . . I recently got VPX . . .

Which version 11 or 12 and what is the version number as found under Help, About?

Is the lightning symbol bottom right of the Program preview monitor turned on ie blue? - If not turn it on - this will lower the frame rate and resolution for playback putting less load on the CPU/HD4600 during playback

Are you using proxy files? If not, and you have enough free space on the hard drive drive, turn them on in the project settings, they may take a while to create, however as they are a lower resolution less compressed video format they reduce the load for playback.

VPX 11 - version 17.0.1.32 the lightning symbol was set to on and with all the factors ticked, ample hard drive space. Having tried a few other projects it seems to be creating this behavior however demanding or not the project is. Eventually, after a few minutes the internal GPU is fluctuating between 100% and 0% constantly as shown in the screenshot above. Only with VPX. If you know, would you mind telling me how I can set the settings so that the program uses my GTX 1070 more and internal graphics less as I assume that may help - I'm finding that part of the menus a bit confusing.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Jonner.

Try going to Windows Settings / Display / Graphics Settings / Graphics Performance preference / Choose an app to set preference / Browse / Local Disc (C:) / Program Files / MAGIX / Movie Edit Pro X / (11 or 12 depending on which version you have) / and click on the Video Pro X exe. file and add.

Then you should have an options box. Select Power Saving for the Intel GPU. and save.

See if that helps.

Thanks for the help I will try that. I've just been playing around with various things and I may have found what was causing this odd behavior but could do with some advice on whether the following can be an issue in VPX - it may help others.

If you look at the screenshot in my frist post there are 4 boxes in task manager showing the internal graphics utilisation: 3D, copy, video decode, video processing. As you can see the only one cycling between 100% and 0% is 'copy'. Looking online I think this refers to moving video files around. In the projects I had put together in VPX I had been dragging the video files from Windows Explorer directly into the timeline in VPX. Looking online I saw a brief suggestion that VPX does not like that. So, in all subsequent projects I have been vary careful to only open up the imported files in the top right import window of VPX. Low and behold preview is running fine and I no longer get the problematic crashing and 100% utilisation of my internal GPU.

I may have solved my own problem - but to help others does anyone know if it is a known issue with VPX that dragging files directly into the timeline from Windows Explorer can cause crashes or other issues?

Thanks CubaAce and JohnBaker for replying above I am sure those suggestions will help things run more smoothly now that I seem to have got past this crashing / GPU utilisation issue.

@Jonners55 @johnebaker

Hi Jonners.

Most of the time I do import my clips from within MEP but mainly because I can add the folder location for easy recall later. On the odd occasion I drag files from explorer. I can't honestly say I've noticed any reperformance hit one way or the other. I'm not saying it doesn't, just that personally I've not noticed one.
