OLDER VERSIONS OF A PROJECT?

MCK wrote on 10/10/2020, 12:54 PM

I imported some animation into my project. At first, the animation (which was 4k downscaled to full HD) played smoothly. But something changed... playback of this section became erratic and I could not recover the situation. Then I got a message saying that I needed to create proxy files for unnamed footage. This took me by surprise. I let the creation of the proxy files go ahead, assuming that only one or two were missing... but after several hours of proxy creating, I decided that something had gone badly wrong. So I aborted the process. I now want to resume work on the project and wonder if I can use the previous day's version? I seem to have numerous BAK.MV files... is it possible to import the one from the previous day? If so, how?

I have worked out how to open older versions... but it's not the answer. Other animated sequences are suddenly choppy. Could this have anything to do with the Windows 10 upgrade which preceded these issues?

@MCK

Yes it is possible but needs to be approached with care!

By default, VPX keeps up to 10 of these BAK files, starting the numbering at 0, then through to 9, and then starting again at 0 so overwriting the earlier "0" version. If you have spent a lot of time today on your project it is possible that ALL your BAK files will have been created today.

Each BAK file will have a created date and time so you need to check carefully that particular data. In your case it seems the most important item is the date!So start by loading the BAK file that has yesterday's date, but the "latest" time. If that one is what you need, immediately resave it as a (newly-named) MVP file. If that one is not what you need, select the "next older" and try it, and so on.

Understood. Unfortunately, I was wrong to think this would solve the problem. Can't understand why footage suddenly becomes choppy. Midway through an editing session! Can't find a reason for it.

@MCK

Hi.

Are the files on an external drive? If so did you change the USB port it was running from?

When you saved your project at the end of your first session did you save as or just save?

Did you have the Blue lightning symbol ticked with the following selection during the editing?

What are the settings of your project? Look in, File \ Settings \ Movie \ Movie Settings.

If the project is set to work in HD make sure VPX hasn't saved the project as 4K.

See if the 'Automatically create proxy files' box has been ticked. If so, try unticking it.

Ray.

Hi

Can you put your computer specification, Windows version and VPX version in your signature so we do not have to go hunting for it, see my signature as an example of what is required.

. . . . I have worked out how to open older versions... but it's not the answer. Other animated sequences are suddenly choppy. Could this have anything to do with the Windows 10 upgrade which preceded these issues? . . . .

Upgrade from which version of Windows to which version of Windows 10?

Depending on the previous version of Windows and you computer spec it is quite possible the Win 10 upgrade has tipped the balance of your computer into low available free space, higher memory usage or running out of resources.

Additionally what version of VPX were the old projects created with?

Automatically create proxy files was indeed ticked. I have unticked it.
The blue lightning symbol was not ticked. I have ticked it.
And suddenly playback is smooth.
Many, many thanks.

Certainly turning on the preview monitor lightning symbol will improve playback as it reduces the frame rate and resolution of the video on the timeline, however

. . . . but after several hours of proxy creating, I decided that something had gone badly wrong . . . .

this issue may come back to bite you unexpectedly, it did me with an older project.

What is the run time of the 4K animation files?

. . . . Will provide more info next time I run into a problem . . . .

It would be better if it is in your signature, we don't have the hassle of trying to find it a a previous post which may be many months or years ago.

Surely that depends on which options are ticked? You don't have to lose frame rates. At least I don't have to, though this does come down to the ability of the system to cope. Yes it would be nice to see people put their specs in their signatures. Also maybe in this instance how many tracks of visuals / animations are running in parallel?

It does, however to turn them off has to be a deliberate action as they are on by default.

That would be a good idea as you know, 😉, it can make a very big difference, @MCK are there multiple animations running parallel on several tracks?
