OT: Removing these messages, and other site queries?

terrypin wrote on 3/1/2017, 7:23 AM

I suppose I must have accidentally clicked 'Follow this' and have just now reversed it on that post about the introduction of the new magix.info site. But I'm curious about a couple of things:

1. The setting for email notifications that is said to be found within my Profile? Where, exactly?

2. What's this strange untitled box?

Also:

3. Why is my avatar top right always annotated with '2', presumably implying that I have two new and/or unread messages?

4. Presumably the strange substitute icons (k = Bold, y = italics, etc) is a very temporary glitch?

5. I see the Messages section continues unabashed with Ukranian months, despite requests for a fix it going back months.

Hi Terry,

The thread was spammed by at least two idiots. The messages have been removed, but not before we received emails. With all of the great technology available, surely there is a way for the authorities to track down these people and do whatever is necessary.

1. Under Settings - Email message to - uncheck what you do not want to receive. Also, under Followed, you can put an X beside any that you no longer wish to follow.

2. That was the spammer who has now been terminated. Definitely never click on any of the links that they put there.

3. When you go into your profile, Followed, you may see one of the three blue highlighted subjects just above the list has a 2 at the upper right. Thus you may be following two Tutorials or Media, so click on it to see.

4. No idea.

5. I'm on the USA server so I don't have the problem. It seems to be just the UK server ever since Brexit.

I returned safely from my trip on Saturday night, now I'm off to have tooth pulled. Life goes on.

Hi Terry

  1. They are here

  2. John CB got there first - did not notice it was the attempted hacker who was deleted.

  3. The 2 indicates a new message or post you are following has an unread comment- look at the left side menu of your profile page - you should see the 2 against one of the items.

  4. This suggests you have a browser refresh issue

  5. No response here either

Amended after seeing John CB beat me to it.

Hi Terry

Q1 - the 2 refers to Q2 where you have the a followed Forum topic and a Tutorial comment which you have not read.

The problem is they may be very old items and you have to go digging to find them - I had 8 such items a couple of months ago - took me many hours (on and off) to locate and eliminate them.

Q3 should be a double tick - have not found out what this does.

Q4 should be the X to set the hide status

Q5 these are the page navigation button starting from the top going clockwise they are:

Top of page, Next page, Bottom of page and Previous page.

and should be a chevron in the appropriate direction

It looks like your browser cache may be corrupt and is messing up the display - try clearing the cache and revisit the website.

The page should look like this

Picture amended did not show nav icons

My tooth was due to come out before I went away, so I managed to delay it by a couple of weeks. The deed is done and I felt nothing. I should have had my wife film the procedure. Now my wife has given me a choice between baby food and Ensure. Hmm, I brought back and bottle of Scottish pain killer, for medicinal purposes only....

Thanks a bunch, John. Repeated restarts made no difference so I'll do as you suggest and clear the cache when I get back to the PC.

A more helpful design would have allowed direct access to any items needing viewing or action IMO.

@JohnCB, I'll have to look up what Ensure is, but in your place I'd just stick with the Scottish pain killer.

Hi

I am using Firefox and these symbols in Q3, 4 & 5 only appear in the forum when I translate the page using the Google translate Add on...??

I got notification emails caused by the 2 spammers which someone, presumably a Mod, has hidden the post, but wonder if that is enough to stop magix info sending the notifications?

Not only did I feel no pain, I remember telling the dentist where I went in Africa the week before, then my wife was saying, "John, John, wake up." Later, I asked her how we got home. She gave me a run down of the conversations, the route home, the food store, the bank (I went to the automatic teller), then home. I remembered almost nothing of this, and I was still feeling no pain, very happy. Whatever they pumped into my arm is not for sale, thank goodness. It seems to contain a truth serum.

Laphroiag PX Cask - haven't had it before, only regular, Quarter Cask and Triple Wood. It was a toss up between something new or the Singleton or the Talisker that I had purchased on my last trip to England and finished both earlier this year.

I'm back trying to complete the tutorial about drawing with a point that I promised before my computer crashed. I just noticed a fatal error message that came up in MEP2016 before the crash that I will post separately. The message was recorded on-screen so I still have it.

For first time in years I'm out of Scotch. Used to be a regular Christmas present from one or other of my sons, and I built up a fair supply, as wine is my usual choice. I may actually have to buy a bottle. Usual dilemma: one of my known single malt favourites (Bowmore, etc) or something entirely new.

These icon corruptions are really annoying me now! Cleared magix.info cache, no change. Disabled several Firefox add-ins, no change. That included gtranslate 0.14.0.

If I right click and choose 'View This Page in IE', normality is restored. Same with Tools > Open in Google Chrome. But obviously don't want to do either of those constantly. I have reported it but, given that we're still waiting for other fixes reported months ago I'm not optimistic.

Any more ideas anyone?

Hi Terry

. . . .I have reported it . . .

IMHO the problem is with your Firefox, not the website.

Firefox is displaying the Unicode characters because the required icon is not available

Your original image in this post above shows Firefox is downloading the icons from Magix, however the arrow icons are not being loaded or displayed possibly because a setting has been turned off or your Firefox profile has corrupted

Check the following Firefox settings in Tools, Options, Content, Fonts & Colors, Advanced are as shown below

If the circled setting is on, turn it off and restart Firefox, turn the setting back on and then restart Firefox.

If that does not fix the problem, try creating a new profile - do not delete the existing one - see here for how to create and load on Firefox startup.

If the new profile is OK then revert back to the old profile export all your bookmarks, switch to the new profile and import your bookmarks. You will lose other customisations etc

Set the new profile to load at startup.

Bingo, well done John!

That font option is indeed the cause. Re-enabling Allow pages to choose their own fonts returns normality to magix.info.

I'd posted to the Firefox forum too and got the same suggested solution.

I turned off that setting two weeks ago as a solution to a puzzling display problem I raised in the Firefox forum. See this thread if you're curious: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3027602

I see that I closed off with this:
I can't remember why I enabled it at some point. Maybe I'll find out when some other page now displays unexpectedly!

Now I know! Of course, re-enabling it also re-introduces the small display problem on that page (only with FF), and the mystery as to why other FF users don't get that problem.

I'll let Magix.Info Support know it was down to FF and me.

Did you also check the Font size in that same dialog?

You can also enlarge a page with Ctrl and + on the number pad of your keyboard - Ctrl and - reduces the page size.

Changing font size makes no difference. How does the page

look to you in Firefox?

It's a trivial difference, but when I first opened the page I had no idea how much text was invisible.

Hi Terry

The page looks the same as your top image in Firefox and Internet Explorer and Edge and Chrome.

Assuming the lower picture is how it should look then - this would suggest menu sections have some erroneous margin or padding setting which is causing it to drop below where it should be.

Have you informed the hotel?

Hi everybody,

5. I see the Messages section continues unabashed with Ukranian months, despite requests for a fix it going back months.

We've just updated magix.info and with it we fixed issue number five.

@terrypin do you still see the "untitled box"(issue number 2) ?

Best regards,
Mathias

Thanks Mathias, good to lose the Ukrainian month!

Yes, happily I haven't seen that #2 issue again.

Now, how about changing the date format here in the main forum to one that both UK and US users can use comfortably please? So today would be 9 March 2017, or 9th March 2017, or similar. Not 03/09/2017 - which one day I will inevitably interpret as 3rd September. 🙂

Hi Terry,

I totally understand that the current date format is – to understate – suboptimal. At the moment we are working on way bigger improvements on the website. This means the date format unfortunately is not our priority.

Anyway, I like your suggestion and will try to speed up the process leading to a solution.
