Package installer

Squitchypants wrote on 11/12/2020, 6:47 PM

I have read through quite a few threads on here, I've deactivated, reactivated, I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I've updated, I bought the extra codec and installed it, and I still get the exact same error and it's driving me nuts, so last resort was to post, even though I know the first answer will be: "There are already X number of posts about this on the forum". Honestly, maybe this issue should have been taken care of by now if there's so many previous threads? (sorry not trying to be bitchy).

So when importing an .MTS file, I get the following:

-----------------------

An expansion package is needed in order to use this audio feature.
Do you want to download the expansion package for free now?

An error occurred while downloading the package. Please try again later.

-----------------------

I did see one thread about having an old email addy, or having changed it at some point (which I have), but the post was from 2014, is that maybe still an issue (and not sure where to change the email back). I have disabled the firewall completely, I don't have antivirus running (well I do, but I did reboot with everything disabled). I never had this problem before, its MEP 2016 pro plus, and it's paid/registered. It used to work fine, I don't think I did anything except update (so now I get the ads for MEP 2021 no problem, but I can't import video with audio). When I reinstalled I tried this without doing the program update, but maybe it was something that stayed resident?

Any help with this would be great, and again, I do know this has been asked before. :)

Hi Squitchy.

Have you added MEP 2016 to be ignored by Windows defender? (assuming you are running Win 10).

It may help.

I checked that really early on, I even went into the registry and disabled all microsoft security (which is tougher than I thought it would be). It had defaulted to "allow private/public" on install, and thing is, this has been installed for over a year and functioning, I believe it was the update that has created the issue, but of course it could be something else (and at least I'm not the only person with this issue, just frustrating that it's referenced back as far as 2012).

Hi.

Unfortunately it could equally be a Windows update patch that has caused a problem, maybe by making a previous driver used by MEP useless.

You could try rolling back Windows to a time when it was working.and see if that cures the problem.

You could also try Windows compatibility and see if it works simulating win 8.

[Edit]

Last but not least, Magix may no longer have the patch on their servers. It may be time to get in contact with Magix.

Hi.

Searching through the Magix help database they say that if Stereo Mix has been disabled by a Windows update (and it has done that on my machine more than once) to enable it again.

You could try checking that as well.

I actually run Sledgehammer on my win 10 box (it did an unrequested update during a large 3d print), and it's been running for as long as this install has been... but I would say that I wouldn't put it past them to bypass it via MS office or something like that. I'll see if that has happened, although I tried one workaround that I found on youtube that did something along those lines via a cd-burn export dialogue window. I'm still suspecting the "changed email from the one you originated with", but again not sure if the issue would be with the one in the software, or the one on account here with magix. I appreciate the help and effort, I'll be sure to post here when/if it's finally resolved, as I'm sure I won't be the last (and I know I'm not the first) with this quirky bug.

I did submit a ticket with as much info as I could give. We'll see what they come back with, as 10 hours of trying to debug this is more than enough. I was right on the verge of reinstalling windows...but that would take another full day of re-installing programs, and no guarantee that it would fix the issue :)

Squitchypants wrote on 11/13/2020, 10:01 AM

Well, I suppose they will delete this thread after this, but as I suspected...it WAS the 'update' that wrecked the software and made it unuseable... Here is their response:

--------------------------------------

Free personalised support for your product is no longer available as it is older than 12 months. We hope for your understanding and can only recommend to use the other resources that are available through MAGIX:

MAGIX Help-Center & VEGAS Help-Center
MAGIX Online-Tutorials & VEGAS Online-Tutorials

You might also want to take a look at one of our newer programs. If you were experiencing a technical problem or lacking a feature in your older version, it is possible that the newer version will have resolved the issue. You can find free trial versions of most of our products on our website (www.magix.net) under the free download section: http://www.magix.com/gb/free-download/
As an existing customer, we'd be happy to offer an upgrade discount, should you wish to upgrade.

----------------------------------------

So as I said at the beginning of the thread, once I did the 'upgrade' I started getting ads for the new version "at a discount", but instead of making the product better with new features (and therefore making me want to upgrade), they removed the ability for me to import video files into the software (software specifically for editing video files), and more or less told me to pay for an upgrade (which why would I, knowing that in 3.5 years they will likely shut that down remotely as well).

Now the fun part: I use the software for 2 things...to make internal videos for my company, AND to upload to my youtube channel. The channel isn't huge, but it's not small by any means (50K subs and growing). Now that I literally have to buy/learn an entirely different software product before I can upload to my channel, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be 'somewhat annoyed' by the time I do manage to get the next video uploaded. I was midway through my last vid when I "upgraded", so that is now scrap, but fortunately their response above will be content for the next vid. They might even be able to get it yanked from youtube, but they won't get it off gab or bitchute, and being a person that does tend to hold a grudge (and 2x annoyed that they got me to pay for their codec, for the software that they sabotaged), I'm sure to get my $80 worth of annoyance out of this. If they only made a better product, I could easily justify the cost of an upgrade, but the way they went about it? F-U magix. Even microsoft doesn't completely disable their OS when they try and force you to upgrade. I'm just glad I didn't make my knickname here the name of the channel (I almost did), which would make it much easier for them to tag and report it to youtube, now they just have to sit back and enjoy. Absolutely unbelievable. Well I guess that's it for me on this forum, no need for support for a program I don't plan to use! Thanks for the help from everyone here, I do appreciate it, and best of luck to you :)

Yes I did, and went through the whole thing, but if you look above, magix confirmed that they messed up the program, and if I want it to work, I should buy the new version (I didn't, I signed up with Adobe for their $$$ premiere suite). They have removed the package installer from their website, which explains why I couldn't even install it and getting it running on a completely new computer. You cannot import hi def video/audio without the package (whatever that is), and they no longer offer it for download, so "buy new one, why not, it's only 79.99 Euro, usually 99 Euro, what a steal of a deal!"

Good luck with that one then!

I just read this on a YT video about using DD in Adobe products.

UPDATE: Adobe has not renewed their Dolby license so as a result, any Dolby export functionality will not be available in any version of Premiere Pro CC, Audition CC or Media Encoder CC. https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/m...

Magix may have gone down the same route - although plenty of people have reported that .MTS ie DD5.1 AC3 Import / Export is still available in the latest patch of MEP and VPX, despite the patch notes saying it has been removed.
