Phantom audio "track" or some audio remnant.

FF22 wrote on 4/7/2020, 3:39 PM

I've been through the manual. I imported a video I took using a panasonic DIGITAL camera (not a video camera). I wanted to remove the audio track leaving only the video. I ungrouped it and then deleted it. It was still playing. I didn't see any evidence in any of the lower tracks of audio. Still playing audio. I completely deleted the entire clip. Still playing audio but now no video in the gap the deletion created. I stripped the audio using VLC. Reimported the silenced version. Still audio. I am at wits end or haunted. I have exited Magix 2020 a few times in the process to no avail. Would deleting the hdp do anything?

Yes, the damn file it too long. But phanton (of the opera) audio tracks? Still have 300 gigs on C; drive

I may not understand. What "image to enlarge" do I click on? But I picked a "still" image (where the audio is playing without any audio track) and when I hit that little arrow, the option you suggested is GRAYED out and cannot be selected.

My original post was about a video clip that had NO AUDIO track anymore but the audio still plays.

In this case, there is audio for a series of still images but again, there is NO AUDIO track in evidence. I've scrolled down to Track 31 - no audio in evidence. I've closed and reopened Magix - is there another way to clear its buffers or caches or whatever?

I mean a ghostly audio track is a pain. In this case, I was walking through a museum and using the Panasonic to film a few videos. But the background ambient noises, voices, footsteps, etc, is distracting and I want to cut it out. And now it is "haunting" some of the still images.

But what is possibly ODD. In the still images/jpg's with audio, there is another video just after it. THIS video does not have audio and I believe that is the audio on (covering) the previous still jpg's.

I guess it maybe that the darn show is just too long and giving Magix fits.

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy! 😀 Fortunately, while pretty damn old, I did know how to enlarge/view your attachment. (g)

But as noted, that option is grayed out and not available.

Where can an audio track be lurking? And if not a TRACK, what is it and where is it lurking? I mean this is really, really interesting.

Maybe I should add that I "import" the video files by dragging from a folder. I do NOT use Magix's import function.

Hi,

Just to make sure, in your first post, you say that you ungrouped the Audio from the video and then deleted the audio. I presume that you had them on separate tracks, correct?

Here are a couple of things to try. Ctrl+A to copy all. Open a new movie by clicking on the + button (makes a new tab. Ctrl+V. Play it back. Is the audio still playing?

Open the mixer. Make it as wide as you can. Play back. Watch for signs of audio playing on a track. If you don't see any, scroll to the right in the mixer and play back, etc. The idea is to try to locate which track the audio may be playing on.

Okay, the mixer is showing audio on Track 1. But it is playing over a series of jpg's. I've moved them down and there's nothing hiding underneath them. Pressing Mute, using slider, on that track has no effect. Audio keeps playing. I will try the copy track to new video next but thought I would report the helpful (although problematic) results of that. Audio in track 1 but no evidence of it there! (g)

Okay, what PLUS + do I hit to open a new movie? Using the + above the regular keyboard starting the movie playing at the current pointer. The + on the numeric keyboard does nothing. I must be missing something (the screw is not only loose but missing). I appreciate the help

Oh, when I Ctrl-A and then open a new project (closing my current one), when I try Ctrl-v is says "clipboard" empty. So closing a project clears the clipboard? I actually, thought I remembered do something similar ages ago to copy sections to a new project.

The phantom audio is still playing in the copy. I've captured the screen and sound. The pointer is traveling over jpg images and there is audio. It is showing in the mixer in Track 1 and I moved the mixer upward so that it shows. I've scrolled down the 32 tracks and there's no audio in any of them. I've also moved the jpg's down to Track 2 to reveal that there's nothing hiding under them (not shown in this screen capture). I've hit the MUTE button and the sound continues.

Let's see how I do sharing the link:

Hi

. . . . I wanted to remove the audio track leaving only the video. I ungrouped it and then deleted it. It was still playing. . . . .

The problem may be due to 'proxy files' being created for the video audio that was on the timeline.

In the folder where the source video is, are there any files with odd looking names which includes the original video file name, the word proxy and the file extension WAV - such as this example from a video clip named MAH07907.mp4:

MAH07907_mp4_proxy_baa94c3a354d4530dcac408a76042248.WAV

If there is, with MEP closed, move them to a new folder, any that are required should be recreated when you open the project. If alli s well deleted the moved files.

HTH

The recording worked fine and it looks like you haven't split the audio from the video ( I'm guessing at this point as your video shows no images in track one) If track one is video footage then both video and audio are on the same track. This is not the way I work so I'm guessing it's impossible to remove the audio although you could pull down the audio on the offending tracks on the mixer and automate the mixer at the appropriate points but that may be a bit advanced for you.

The alternative is to import tracks into the project so the audio and and video are put onto separate tracks.

I have my timeline arranger set so I can see all automation, sound and fade levels as well as wave forms and images.

I have tried several times to add an image to this comment but the Save changes buttons keeps fading out and won't activate.

That is indeed strange. Start with what John EB suggested.

If that doesn't work, then do as Ray suggested, drag the volume slider for track 1 in the mixer to the bottom to turn it off.

Hi

HTH

John EB

NO WAV files. Only those HDP files.

The main portion of the screen capture shows JPG images (Track 1) with the Pointer moving forward over them while an "audio" is present. There is nothing to ungroup except titles that I might have applied. Where I wanted to "kill" audio for some of the video inserts, I did UNgroup and deleted the audio track. In some cases those audios persisted even after being "deleted". But in the segment I posted, there is audio accompanying simple jpg files and looking at Track 1 (moving the jpg's down a track and out of the way) and looking at the remainder of the tracks (to number 32) there is not further audio element. But the Mixer is showing an Audio on Track 1. But using the Mixer (unless I'm using it wrong - I rarely have used it), the MUTE button and the dials have no impact on that audio presence. The phantom audio just keeps on playing/sounding.

In an earlier experience with this problem. I even deleted like 15 jpg images where the audio was playing. Nothing showed in the Track. Nothing showed below. But the audio persisted.

I really do appreciate everyone's effort to figure this out. It really should be easy. But as you noted when you could not post an image - Technology is fickle.

That is indeed strange. Start with what John EB suggested.

If that doesn't work, then do as Ray suggested, drag the volume slider for track 1 in the mixer to the bottom to turn it off.

John CB

Been there, done that. The Mixer has no impact on the phantom audio. It just keeps on playing. And again, there's no evidence in the Mixer of audio elsewhere. Mixer shows audio on Track 1 but has no power to silence, lower it or change it.

I'm still trying to find out if you are importing your video clips into the editor to one track of two tracks? Are the audio tracks separated onto individual track on importing to the timeline editor or not? I'm assuming from the short and limited view of the timeline editor in your video that they are not.

If you had you could get more information on each object.

Also, on second inspection of your video there is evidence you have some proxy files still enabled.

Look at my earlier replies as to how to remove them.

Ray.

I guess that I am NOT separating the audio tracks on import. Where do you do that? I just looked through the manual and help. But my search terms not be focused. Although, when dealing with video files, if I've wanted to edit the audio (lower/increase volume or delete it entirely), I've UNgrouped and seen the audio track.

I have looked at all three folders where I have my imported materials (Panasonic camera, Pixel phone and Osmo Action video camera). There are NO WAV files in any of those folders. Is there someplace else they might be stored?

I have to admit that while using Magix for years, many functions were not explored. Actually, I'm not really doing anything different using it now. Import jpg's, intersperse some of the videos. Throw in titles and fade them in/out. Show a jpg longer to allow thought. Zoom/pan. Then throw in a music track.

Although, now I really don't burn dvd's. I merely put it on a thumb drive or ssd drive and plug it into tv.

One other thing and it has been mentioned in passing. This is my first "feature length" project so possibly I'm taxing Magix with length. It is running to about 130 minutes. Yes, no audience will sit for it. But as I contemplate my navel during retirement and corona, I have time for it.

EVERYONE'S patience is really appreciated.

Hi

. . . . The Mixer has no impact on the phantom audio . . . . .

Try the following:

  1. Play each track in Solo mode - S button in the track header to see if you can identify which track it is on if any.

  2. Look in AudioTemp folder, location will be in the program settings, Folders tab, for any audio files and move them to another folder.

@CubeAce

Ray, in your image above the rounded oblong markers you have labelled as showing proxy files do not indicate that proxy files are present.

These transport controls were introduced with MEP 2015 and are present in a new empty project.

They set the range where the timeline cursor appears in the Preview Monitor - for what purpose is a mystery as they are not mentioned in any of the manuals for MEP or VPX (AFAICS) from when they were first introduced..

Oh, no audio files in the Audio Temp folder.

Using SOLO, it seems to be in Track 1. I have UNgrouped that video till I'm blue in the face and no-audio-track shows up. Also, if you can make out the name of that video, it contains "no audio" as part of its name. I stripped the audio using VLC. And using Media Info shows that there is NO audio in the file. But, again, audio plays.

This is an instance of a video file with phantom sound. In the screen capture above, it was simple jpg's that had not audio that still played these phantom audios.

Hi John.

They produce files similar to proxy files and will only occur if you use the small downward arrow next to that small lightning arrow and the program then scans and 'decides' it is having difficulty playing back that section smoothly. They can be produced whether proxy files are enabled or not. Their influence persists after alterations have been made if not removed. I need a track count of at least 6 active tracks within a portion of timeline to get this to work but other systems may do it with less load. It does not go across the whole timeline even if that is selected but renders portions within the project 'range' selected.

If you want, try it out on my project I sent you.

Ray.

Other than those "proxy- WAV" files mentioned above, is there a way to find and exterminate any other proxy files.

I don't have enough years left to restart this project (g). Integrating files from three sources was a pain. Since I forgot to set the time to China time on my camera, its time-stamp is off. The phone did a reasonably job of knowing the proper time zone (although irfanview shows two different times - one is correct, the other off by some hours). Also the Pixel photos are geo-tagged making it easy to place them in context. The video camera also had the wrong time but the videos it produced are easier to place in context and there are much fewer of them.

(just as an aside: The GOOGLE Pixel phone was the only one phone on this trip (of 20 something in our group) which actually received Gmail and could use G-maps. It also was able to get Yahoo news. Others in the group were stymied.)

I have tested using your project - the controls indicated below do not have any effect with any of the detect options for preview rendering.

Auto only selects the intro and outro and totally ignores thethe region between the two controls shown below.

When I remove the rendered ranges I am not seeing any persistence after they are removed, the playback reverts to being jerky again.

Hi John.

I don't know why you are showing me that portion of the screen and you won't see any difference until you take away some of the project files while the proxy rendering is in place. Whereupon you still won't see any difference as that is the point. The new rendering takes over from the other files playing on the tracks underneath. Take one part of one track away and if it was a part of the render it will remain showing /playing. The problem is it doesn't always render all the tracks beneath it and sometimes only one track gets rendered. I can't pretend I know what goes on, all I can say is on my War and Peace Revival video I put together I had a similar problem and re-rendering the effected section cleared the problem. It was worth a try.
