Playback Cursor/Timeline Marker not visible, not moving

kyle-fisher wrote on 2/10/2017, 8:01 PM

The problem is pretty straightforward and I'm seeing that it's been raised a few other times: the playback cursor, or timeline marker, is either invisible or just not moving in time with a playing project... a brand new project of no consequential length.

I'm running MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus, Version 15.0.0.107 (UDP3).

Windows 8.1

Intel Core i5-4460

In my research I've seen some make a distinction on this issue regarding 32-bit versus 64-bit... and I am in fact using a 64-bit OS, x64-based processor.

The PC itself is pretty much brand spankin' new... for whatever that's worth.

In any case, I've done a bit of snooping about and I've seen this issue brought up a few other times and usually the suggestion seems to boil down to "shut down and then start up your computer" which, of course, I've tried. I don't appear to be using a whole lot of CPU so I'm not really sure what the problem here is.

I appreciate any insight.

Welcome to the MAGIX user to user forums.

From what you write, I think your problem is different to a recent poster whose timeline cursor would not move because, in that case, the project did not play either. You seem to suggest your project plays but the cursor does not move.

To me, that suggests a possible graphics problem. One thing you didn't tell us about your computer was the type of graphics card, if any, you have or whether your computer uses the CPU for graphics output. Have you checked that the drivers for your graphics are fully up to date?

I know JohnEB is much more au fait with the specifics of the capability of CPUs with integrated graphics than I am; I wonder whether your processor is actually capable of the quite heavy processing this task demands? Hopefully, once you have given us more information about this aspect of your computer, he will see this thread and post.

Hi,

First confirm that the following obvious steps have proved unsuccessful:

1. New project, new imported files
2. F9 to reset layout
3. Reset program settings to defaults (after noting any customisations you'll want to restore).
4. Reboot PC
5. Use Help > Update online ... to check that latest patches are installed. Automatic prompts on start-up are not issued reliably. (Your MEP 2016 is up-to-date; I've included this step in case other users end up here with similar problem.)
6. Click Optimize timeline view icon, bottom right corner, 4th from right.

Then consider other possibilities:

6. It's possible that a recent Windows update may have somehow damaged your graphics driver. (Windows 10 appears particularly implicated.) Either uninstall the update if possible or reinstall the latest driver. Or a System Restore to a recent date before the update might work.

7. Reinstall the MAGIX program. This needs to be done thoroughly to remove all vestiges of the program first.

Edit: I see you beat me to it, Jeff!

Hi

Th i5-4460 is more than capable running Harware Acceleration - it has the same integrated graphics chipset as mine - the HD4600.

. . . . It's possible that a recent Windows update may have somehow damaged your graphics driver. (Windows 10 appears particularly implicated.) . . . .

It may have if, however we are looking at Windows 8.1. which was much better at driver updating.

I would suggest you download the Intel Driver Update Utility and run this to check if you have the latest drivers.
