Playing the video at double speed (x2 or x4) while editing

alex-mueller wrote on 2/21/2017, 9:19 PM

Hi there, is it possible, while editing a video, to run the raw video file at double speed or higher? I'm required to edit educational videos that can run for 2 hours. At this stage, I'm forced to sit through the 2-hour video while I edit out the pauses and add captions. Does Movie Edit Pro 2016 Premium has this ability?

Hi

. . . . to run the raw video file at double speed or higher . . . .

This is possible - use this control, at the bottom of the preview monitor, to move faster through the video in both forward and reverse - drag the centre dot to move in the appropriate direction.

Note: If you keep dragging the mouse, to the left or right, past the end of the apparent limits you can fast forward and reverse up to 100 x actual speed.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, my version 'Movie Edit Pro 2016 Premium' does not have this feature on the preview monitor as your image suggests. In face my version only has the middle section of your preview monitor. Is there a later version out or a setting I need to adjust to get this feature.

Thanking you in advance.

I think you need to drag the side(s) of the preview monitor in order to make it wider (bigger). Then you should be able to see those missing controls.

Hi emmrecs,

Thanks for the comment, I gave it a go without any success. I even made the preview monitor full screen without any extra controls appearing. :(

I also installed the recent update to the product but that did not do anything in terms of adding extra controls.

Looking through the PDF manual I notice that you can speed by the view by pressing 'Shift' and 'L' together, This seems to speed up the tracker, however, I get no audio or video until I slow it back down to normal speed.

I think I found it, thank you to everyone who commented and provided me with their support, very much appreciated. Here is what I found:

In Movie Edit Pro 16 you would load the video into the timeline, then make sure it is highlighted orange, locate the "Effects" tab and choose "Video Effects".

In that area, you will find "Speed" which has a factor increase slide, which allows you to speed up, slow down and even reverse.

No, I was wrong, this only speeds up the footage (not for editing purposes) The problem still exists :(

alex-mueller, I have a vague memory of a post, perhaps from some time ago, where the problem of the disappearing shuttle jog wheel was raised and solved. Perhaps if you search the forum you will find the thread.

Or, what does the Help file say about "scrubbing" or "shuttle wheel" or "jog wheel"? I don't have MEP so can't do that search myself.

UPDATE: I think I may have found the answer, assuming MEP behaves the same way as VPX, which is what I have. At the top left hand corner of the preview monitor you should have three parallel lines. These are a menu. Click on them and a drop-down should appear, which includes an option for "Visible jog/shuttle". Tick it. The wheel becomes visible below the monitor.

Hi

Should have mentioned - 😊 - if the Jog wheel is not visible, click the Preview screen menu top left of the Preview monitor and select the option shown below.

The jog wheel and shuttle controls will appear when there is an object on the timeline.

Thanks again everyone, I got the Job/shuttle wheel to appear which is great however it only allows me to move forward through the video without sound. (Like to 'Shift' + 'L' shortcut) This means I can't hear the presenter to edit their content. Maybe this program does not yet have this feature?

I've have found a temporary solution. It's not ideal by any means BUT if I play the raw footage in Windows Media Player at x1.5 speed (may even x2 speed) I can go through the video at the higher speed and identify the time points were I need to edit/add captions etc... I then use MEP to jump to that same time point and perform the require editing action.

Thanks again everyone, I'm sure the setting does exist in MEP, I might just be a little too inexperienced at this stage to identify what I'm missing. :) Have a great weekend.

Alex from Australia. :)

Alex, glad you're making progress.

To hear the audio whilst shuttling the video, do a search in the help files for "scrubbing" or "audio scrubbing". However, there is a limit to how much you can speed up the playback before the audio becomes unintelligible or mutes completely.

on the timeline menubar where you change the edit mode there is a small speaker to the right; right this and you will be able selct scrubbing

If Alex or anyone ever finds a way to speed up a track and listen to it at the same time, please let me know. Like Alex I really hate having to sit through long chunks of video/audio at normal speaking rate. This is for me the most miserable part of editing. I find it hard to believe that this feature is not available in MEP. Using the option of Video Effects>Change Speed to listen and then undo the effects is just as annoying imho.

Hi

To here while scrubbing or playing at higher speed forward or backward

Set the scrubbing as shown below

Then use either:

  1. The scrubbing wheel at the bottom of the Preview window

    or

  2. Click the play button and then use the Speed/direction control shown below

This is covered in the installed PDF manual available under Help.
