Preview Images disappear from clips

Ian-Schwartz wrote on 12/28/2021, 4:06 PM

I am using Movie Studio 18 Suite/MEP on Windows 11 Home with both products patched to latest.

I have 16 GB of memory and it's rarely above 50% usage.

I've discovered that the preview images are disappearing from the clips in Timeline Mode at some point in the editing process. I haven't figured out exactly when they disappear, but the following screen shot represents what I'm experiencing.

If I exit MEP and restart it, then everything reverts to normal.

@Ian-Schwartz

Most of those video objects are very short (in duration) and there are a considerable number of them used in 3 minutes of footage. I suspect the sheer quantity of them is making it difficult for MMS to show any images.

Try zooming in to any section of the timeline and you should find the thumbnail images reappear.

I agree with Jeff.

Stretch the width of the track as they don't show below a certain track size width wise.

Another computer/Magix/Windows foible?? Who knows?

Yes, it can be somewhat annoying but both Ray and I have shown you how to mitigate the problem without having to close and restart the program.

@Ian-Schwartz

Hi Ian.

I think it comes down to the strength of your video card when it comes down to playback and how much vram it has. If you look at the specs and requirements for the program you will noticed how the graphics requirements go up depending on the resolution (and I would think frame rate as well) of the files in use.

Playback handling really comes down to the strength of a third party graphics card. If your screenshot was full size then I have placed my timeline above yours for comparison. I am running a graphics card with 4GB of DDR6 Vram.

If you change the size of a track or zoom into a section you will notice that the images have to be redrawn and the more tracks and clips the longer that redrawing takes before completing I'm fairly sure if I look at both vram and ram usage I will often see both rise as the program imports a project. I'm just one of the users here and not a programmer so I don't know for sure but we see more of these types of inquiries on these forums from the people with weaker systems. There is a point at which if you shrink the tracks small enough they no longer will display images. At least I think so.It will be interesting to see if anyone else says they always get images. I suspect because the smaller each image becomes,the more of them appear. Think about it, the more images the more each has to be calculated to represent something you will recognize and each image has to be stored. The less images and larger they are the less calculation is needed.

It is also interesting to note that in the program settings you can select that the tracks only show the first and last image of each clip, to help with not overloading the computer if needed. You may want to try that option and see if you can at least keep your images on the timeline. There are other options as well which I have boxed in yellow that help reduce the needed processing power of a system.

There is some basic information about that on page 63 of the pdf manual.

@CubeAce Couple of stats about my video and rig:

  1. I have a Radeon RX 6700 XT video card with 12243 MB of VRAM.
  2. I have an Intel i9 CPU with 16 GB of RAM.
  3. My video is only 2 minutes and 15 seconds long on 4 tracks, 3 of them being audio and only 1 video.
  4. It's composed of
    1. 12 1920 x 1080 MPEG files
    2. 15 3650 x 3467 JPG files

Considering my hardware an the paltry size of my video, you would think MEP would be able to handle that with ease.

Thanks @emmrecs for your comments, but I think at this point opening a ticket with Magix would at least let them know that this is an issue that another user is experiencing.

Happy New Year to all. Let's hope it's a better one than this one.

@Ian-Schwartz

Hi Ian.

One would think the video card would be more than sufficient on specs at least unless the CPU is much older and bottlenecking the video card. What generation is the CPU? Do you know the model number?

This type of information stops us from asking what may be obvious to you and is helpful if it is put in your signature.

You may also want to check you are running the latest version of Win 10 and that the graphics drivers are up to date. Make sure the source files are on a fast drive that is not the C: drive and not on something like a cloud service like One Drive.

Opening a ticket with Magix is a good idea in this instance.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . Intel i9 CPU . . . .

Which model? When quoting specifications it helps if you give the full name and model.

This looks like an issue with the screen refresh not updating.

Do the icons appear if you zoom in on the timeline?

Do they reappear if you clear the memory cache using Edit, Empty the Undo and cache memory?

What settings do you have in the Program settings, Device Options tab for the Import, Processing, and Export options

Are you working with a single monitor or dual monitors, and whch output port/GPU are they connected to.
