Problems exporting to MPEG-4 MP4 in MEP 2015 Plus

karlh10 wrote on 1/26/2015, 10:15 AM

I have a fresh install of Video Edit 2015 Plus (32-bit).  When I try to export to MPEG-4 I get an error "Could not export due to codec error.  Try changing resolution or resetting to defaults" (not exact text, just what I remember).

Other formats for export work fine.  I tried resetting to defaults.  I am trying to convert 3D avi files to half SBS MP4s.  I had great success with the MEP 2013 Premium trial, but not this new version.

Also, unlike the 2013 version, I couldn't find any option for the h264 type of MP4.

My computer is dated, but I believe it should handle the program.  It's an HP Athlon64, 1GB RAM, single core running Windows XP SP3.

Thanks for any ideas!

The error:

"An error has occurred during export with an external video codec. Please check export settings (resolution, framerate, etc.) and make changes if necesssary. If problems persist, it is recommended to restore default settings."

Hi,

I expect we're going to need full details of your files and export settings to have any real chance of isolating the problem.

Presumably you are using File > Export movie and not the EXPORT tab? It's puzzling that you don't see any option for H264 presets. Here they are in MEP 2014 and I'd be very surprised if 2015 is significantly different.

BTW, 1 GB sounds borderline inadequate IMO.

Is this a trial version you're using? Do you have all the extra downloads if they're accessible?

Thanks Terry!  I am currently not at my PC with the Magix Video Edit Pro 2015 Plus (purchased boxed version)..

This 32-bit version looks exactly like the trial 2013 version I used with great success, so I think the 1 GB meets the minimum requirements.

Anyway, I do File/Export/Mpeg-4 and I get the screen you showed in your post.  When I click on 'Advanced' I get an unfamiliar MPEG-4 screen with far fewer options than what I knew from the 2013 trial.

That was a good idea you had about extra downloads.  I'll check the install DVD and perhaps even download 2015 trial software -- maybe It'll have a few extra codecs or something.  I may also try downloading a MP4 codec pack like K-Lite.

I'll post some screenshots later (tomorrow for you).  Thanks again!

So, pics show the error, and the unfamiliar MPEG-4 (Advanced) screen.  I take it back, I guess it is the H.264 screen, though it seems simpler than the one I knew from MEP 2013.  I've tried re-installing a bunch of codecs, including the K-Lite Codec Pack, but still getting the error.  So, I may go to Magix for support....

I don't follow. What 'pics'? Did you intend to include a screenshot?

Hi

. . . . My computer is dated, but I believe it should handle the program. . . .

It will, however the computer will struggle with 3D AVI files and exporting to HD SBS video - this may be one of the causes of the issue you are having.

. . . . I've tried re-installing a bunch of codecs, including the K-Lite Codec Pack . . . .

These could also be causing the issue - one of them could have taken over the correct mp4 codec and be causing problems.

To get back to a point where diagnosis is going to be meaningful you would need to do the following:-

  1.  Uninstall all the codecs you have added

  2.  Uninstall MEP 2015

  3.  Run the Magix Cleaner tool available here - do not skip this step - if you do you will still be in the same position as before

  4.  Reinstall MEP 2015

  5. Then try exporting mp4

IMHO :-

  • it is time to upgrade your computer to one that meets the required specification for MEP 2015 working with HD video.

  • you should never install 'codec packs' and, if you must as an absolute last resort, install the single genuine codec you need.

Hi

To post images you must have them as jpeg files and when creating a post or answer you click the 4th icon on the second row above the text editing box - if you hover your mouse over the icon it will say Image - you then locate the file and click Send to server.

Once the image is uploaded you will be returned with a link to the file. Click OK.

Note - you cannot copy and paste images into the text box when adding posts.

Hi,

The Magix Cleaner that John EB mentioned is in the Magix user support area and you have to login, go to the Downloads and you will see two tabs, Patches and Miscellaneous Downloads. Select the latter and at the bottom click on page 2. You will see it there.

Hi

@John Cb

Thanks for adding where the Magix Cleaner was - for some reason the hyperlink I added did not take and I did not notice it.

Cheers

Thanks to both Johns for the Magix Cleaner.  I have now uninstalled, cleaned, and re-installed.  It was late last night and some kind of run-time error stopped me from running MEP2015Plus; I'll post more later if I'm stuck.

The image upload is working for me now (here at my job).  Here is the error message (below) which I saw no matter what source file I used.  The MPEG-4 output was Mpeg4IntelExport, seemed to favor PAL over NTSC and never seems to remember my preferences.   Anyway, any ideas are welcome, but I do have an open support ticket with Magix.  Thanks.

browj2 wrote on 1/29/2015, 3:50 PM

Hi,

Check for an update. The NTSC vs PAL problem was supposed to have been resolved in the latest patch. I don't know if it applies to the 32bit version.

Hi

. . . .  The MPEG-4 output was Mpeg4IntelExport . . . .an error has occurred during export with an external codec . . . .

That I think is the clue to your problem - your computer does not support the Intel Export codecs - you need to install the Main Concept codec from Magix and set it as the default codec for export as shown in the images below

John (baker) - Thank you very much!  I didn't try it yet but it really sounds like you've narrowed down the problem.  Thanks for pointing out the "Install extrra programs" under 'Help'.   Then Intel Export probably is way too new for my 10 year old Athlon processor.

Will try this weekend!  Thanks again!

WE HAVE A WINNER!  John Baker!  Thank you very much for solving the problem!  You should start a side business as a private investigator.  Well done.

Here's what the problem and solution were:  Basically, my 10 year old AMD CPU cannot support the Intel MP4 codec.  All I needed to do was choose the MainConcept MPEG-4 Codec over the Intel Codec, and now everything works as expected.  Exactly as John advised me in his last post.  (see his graphics)

So, more detail for anyone in the future reading this thread:  1) Start the Magix Video Edit program.  2) Go to Help>Install Extra Programs>MainConcept_MPEG-4_Codec.  3) Wait a couple of moments while the codec is downloaded in the background 4) Restart program.  5) Go to File>Settings>Program>System and choose the MainConcept codec. 6) Restart program again.  Voila!  Perfect MP4 exports!

By the way, the MainConcept 'advanced' options screen is very familiar to me from my past (good) experience with the MEP2013 trial.

The solution seems so simple now that it's done.  I will be telling the Magix support that the problem is solved (thanks to super-user John Baker).  It's funny because support came really close to the solution when I pointed out that I only seemed to have the Intel export.  I have a feeling they would have figured it out in a few days from now.  I would still give Magix support a high rating.

Thanks also to JohnCB and Terry for taking the time to check into this forum and sharing their expertise.

Thanks again!!

\karl

For the 2016 version

1) Start the Magix Video Edit program.  2) Go to Help > Install Extra Programs > MainConcept_MPEG-4_Codec.  3) Wait a couple of moments while the codec is downloaded in the background 4) Restart program.  5) Go to File > sittings > program > Import / Export > Preferred codec for MPEG-4 > Main concept > Ok

If you get an other repport like (MPEG-4 export module : ............................ the target file could not be written), you must change the security of you local saving. Go to Computer > right click propriety > security > Alow all cases > applique > OK ............ The restar the program ..... That is all

Hi ,

I am using MEP Premium 2016 and have been exporting HEVC files (4k 50 fps) without problem.

Today I got the dreaded...

An error has occurred during export with an external video codec. Please check export settings (resolution, framerate, etc) and make changes if necessary. If problems persist, it is recommended to restore default settings.

I have followed the instructions above but they did not work.

It seems very odd that it has stopped working.

Can anyone help ior advise please...would be very grateful.

Thank you Ray

ps I can get screenshots of anything if that would help.

@RayGus

Did you notice that you had posted to a thread which was started more than 4 years ago, asking about a different version of MEP?

Please do not do this but rather start a new thread with your question, to include the details requested in this post.

This thread will be locked.
