Program Constantly Freezes. Can't Use to Edit.

CHRISTOPHER-COURTER2554 wrote on 2/22/2022, 11:56 PM

Greetings,

Okay, I'm losing my mind. I just can't seem to get my new Movie Edit Pro 2020 working on my system.

It's installed. I can do some very basic edits. However, if I attempt to use ANY of the templates for 3d Animation Basics or even 3D Static Basics, my program totally freezes when I try to move them in my timeline.

For instance, I used the 3D static template "Fairytale" in my timeline. I was simply trying to put the words "Valentine's Day" over my video. I wanted the 3D static "Fairytale" to fade in. Clicked on the title in the timeline. Selected fade in from the menu. THEN...entire program freezes! Can't save my project. Waited over an hour to see if I could save what I was working on. Nope! This sort of thing is happening ALL the time with this program and I just can't seem to edit ANYTHING with this new program.

Running "Game-Ready" drivers on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super

I have tried going into MAGIX Edit Pro Premium's settings - Program - and then changed:

Import, Processing, and Export to each of the following

CPU

Intel(R) UHD Graphics

Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super

Microsoft WARP Device

To be honest, all four of these setting seem to allow for the same performance = Terrible!

For timeline playback I tried to help issues by selecting the lightning bolt at the bottom of the monitor and using Reduce Resolution, Reduce Frame Rate, and Use Proxy Object. No change.

Hi Christopher.

First. If you are still getting the 'Exception 0xc0000005 "ACCESS-VIOLATION' then you should read this Microsoft support article first as that appears to be a Windows issue and not a Movie Edit Pro one.

Second. Your processor top speed should be reading 5GHz not 2.59GHz.

Third. Your Movie Edit Pro version MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Premium Version 21.0.1.119 (IDP3) is Movie Edit Pro 2022 not 2020.

Also can you please report how much free space you have on your C: drive and how fast your project drive is and whether it supports USB3 or USB C. Ideally there should be a third drive to write the exported file to.

Also what size, resolution, and frame rates, and file encoded types are your project files or if not known where do they come from?

Ray.

Ray, the base freq for that CPU is 2.6, and I suspect the 2.59 came from the System page in Control Panel. Not that it matters. Obviously that is a beast of a machine.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al.

It as meant as information and not criticism in case Christopher didn't know himself. It would be better to get that information right if he ever puts that information in his signature for future posts and more helpful to us so as to not go through the 20 questions routine each time Christopher posts.

Sorry if it came across differently.

@CHRISTOPHER-COURTER2554

Hi Christopher.

Another possibility is if you have used One Drive to store your videos online. The speed that the data would arrive at for the program would not be fast enough whatever internet connection you may have. That could also cause both problems you are seeing.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . I just can't seem to get my new Movie Edit Pro 2020 working on my system . . . .

You actually have Movie Edit Pro 2022 which, apart from known issues, works fine on my laptop - almost identical spec.

Are the GPU drivers up to date - the latest versions are:

Intel UHD 630 - 30.0.1.1340

RTX 2070 - 30.0.15.1179 (511.79).

Is the laptop a Lenovo? If so have you turned on Hybrid mode? For other laptops makes, check if they have a 'Hybrid' mode

Which Antivirus program are you using?

I would suggest you put your computer specification in your Profile signature, it will save you having to keep typing it in, and us from having to ask for it when needed.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I am still tying to work on this problem. Sorry about the 2020 typo...that was after about 6 hours of misery trying to simply drop a simple title and my computer crashing over and over again...

I have updated my "signature" to have all the specs I assume you need to see. I may have overdone it, but, I want to be sure it's ALL there.

I am only attempting to edit with iPhone 12 footage at this moment. HDTV - 30FPS - 1080P settings. I do not have any other drives than my internal drive on this laptop. I do have a USB 3 capability.

I use AVAST antivirus.

p.s. I don't know how to TAG the above commenters in this response so they will see it.

Hi

Thanks for the specifcations - there is a little too much info, would you pare it down a bit - see my Signature for an example.

. . . .  iPhone 12 footage . . . .

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip.

In the video section if you see:

  1. Format                                   : HEVC
Format/Info                              : High Efficiency Video Coding

If you want to export video as HEVC (h.265) you will need to purchase and activate the codec frm Magix - you should be prompted for this.

  2. Frame rate mode is Variable most video editors do not process variable framerate video properly - this needs converting using a video converter such as Handbrake. to Constant framerate.

In the Program settings, Device options set the Import, Processing and Export options to the RTX 2070

@CHRISTOPHER-COURTER2554

Hi Christopher.

Thank you for putting all that information into your signature.

You are running the latest version and patch of Movie Edit Pro (MEP)

You have plenty of ram and free C: drive space although ideally I would suggest getting another fast external drive for the project files.

You machine seems to be 'seeing' both GPUs and I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing in this instance because of the following information on that nvidia graphics card.

This device has no display connectivity, as it is not designed to have monitors connected to it. Rather it is intended for use in laptop/notebooks and will use the output of the host mobile device. GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Mobile is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 interface.

So my' guess' is that there may be a problem there if the Intel GPU is not fully supported yet. I can't see why it is not but there may be some proprietor drivers at the MSI website you need to download to make sure the two graphics chips are working in harmony. I'm asking @johnebaker at this point for his opinion as he uses laptops for this and I don't.

The iPhone 12 files should not be a problem. Especially if you are recording the files using MP4 rather than HEVC.

To be clear, it is not that the program does not run but more that it does not run well?

Did you get to the bottom of the crash report with error. Exception 0xc0000005 "ACCESS-VIOLATION".

Ray.

Ray.

no his cometlake cpu can be a 2.6 or a 5 ghz most cometlakes over clocked to 5 ghz and are very hot power hungry chips

i had the i9 cometlake over clocked to 5ghz however ran at 50 to 80 degrees when doing so 50 doing light dutys

Hi.

If it the case that the CPU is locked at 2.6GHz then I'm not sure if this is responsible for the sluggish response of MEP or not as the processor on my machine, even when not pressed into doing much work per core, is running at 4.7GHz.

Magix only say they tested with an Intel i7 6700 which has a top clock speed of 4Ghz along side an nvidia GTX 1070.

There's nothing sluggish about what is going on here. The program freezes and is unusable.

Hi Al. 😀

Can you replicate his findings?

I can't and I'm trying to see which components seem to be using which processes by a series of eliminating various 3D effects. Even when the CPU is only showing 5 to 17% of activity my CPU is clocking 47 to 49Ghz with the Intel GPU bouncing between 23 to 100% and the nvidia card between 1 to 9% both only showing 3D rendering activity on the most demanding of 3D effects. Those in the effects section should create nowhere near that that level of activity but they still seem to be suffering.on the @CHRISTOPHER-COURTER2554 system.

It could be that a variable frame rate video file alongside a constant rate applied effect is causing the problems as @johnebaker I think suspects. What are your thoughts?

Ray, no I can't (bit slow and jerky when applied to a VFR file but hey, my i5 with no GPU isn't a rocketship). That's what makes me think that MEP (and VPX) are fundamentally borked at their current versions. We've got new poster after new poster coming in here with the programs fundamentally failing on machines that are for more "powerful" or advanced than mine. And after 5 patches for 2022, there are still bugs. Not one update was made to MEP 2021 as far as I am aware.

It is not people's machines, it is the absolute inability of the programs to operate/cope outside microfine tolerances, as evidenced by the crazy notion that by swapping around the GPUs (or cancelling them completely) the program suddenly springs to life as if nothing was ever wrong. How can that be right? Surely it would be programmed to at least say ,"sorry, can't do that, or that's not available with your computer" But no, it crashes or freezes. How many people have been turned off from the products because they just don't work on some machines.

Sorry for the rant but I really think the blame should be sheeted home to a buggy, intolerant program and not people's computers.

@Former user I wouldn't call your computer an "average" one by any stretch....

I tried it with UHD 4K 50P and there was slight stuttering, but it played back. No proxies created. GPU was at about 50% with marginal CPU usage. Once the titles disappeared, playback was smooth.

@Reyfox No but when I've tested things like this, if there's a bug in MEP it shows no matter the specs of the pc,

In this thread there's mention of converting to AVC from HEVC, so i ran HEVC, there's comments like 'The program freezes and is unusable', 'It is not people's machines, it is the absolute inability of the programs to operate' & 'That's what makes me think that MEP (and VPX) are fundamentally borked at their current versions'

These all imply that it's MEP not the hardware, i just wanted to share my experience with as you say a machine that isn't average just so that there can be some comparison,

Reyfox wrote on 2/24/2022, 11:33 AM

@Former user thanks.... I have some HEVC footage around here somewhere to test, or I'll shoot some myself and see what happens.

@AAProds

I don't disagree this version has been very bug ridden but not every hiccup is a bug. Some, and it would seem, quite a few problems are hardware compatibility problems. We have had numerous amounts of those as well.

I am not defending Magix as I agree with you that this version should not have been released but I don't think Magix had a choice. It is a public listed company and with that there are commitments to share holders and I think it would have cost them more not to release it. For better or worse.

For this to be a bug and therefore another reason for you to get upset it has to be verified. If it cannot be verified it is a compatibility issue somewhere along the line. That may be rectifiable or not. In the meantime it would be more productive if people here tried to help to find temporary workarounds of help find a solution if possible and a possible ticket raised with Magix to draw their attention to the problem.

So far using any of the 3D text options I cannot replicate this although putting three or four in a row causes my machine to stutter on playback where one stops and the other starts and I can see the blue progress bar run at the base of the program while it stalls and the next section is either rendered or moved to ram ready for playback. Sometimes the next 3D text plays back along the timeline but the text is frozen with no movement. There is little CPU usage but a lot of Intel GPU usage. Even then while the CPU is showing less than 9% usage the cores in use are running at 47 to 49GHz. Hence my concern that CPU speed could be contributory in this instance. That Is should add only effects playback. I have no such problems with the export side.

I also think @johnebaker is onto something if the frame rate is variable while the text effect would not be. That I can't test for as I don't keep other peoples' files to hand once another topic has been dealt with. They are not my files and I only use constant frame rate recordings.

I wonder if @Former user did the same experiment it would impact his machine less than mine. Or it may impact it more.

Difficult to say.

Ray.

@CubeAce This is AVC 1920 x 1080, (4k is similar)

the first five 3D titles are static, 1, 2, 3, play fine, 4 & 5 have a brief pause with coming into play, the last ones are animate 3D, the same goes for them, everything, media inc has a brief pause when coming into play,

This what it looks like when playing, in the video the Video Encode is the screen capture, (that doesn't seem to affect playback)

I let it play round twice in the vid but a 3rd & 4th time around doesn't improve playback, I'd already played it a couple of times before recording,

funny how a simple static text can interrupt play, i turned it & there's no 3D to it, they're only text on an alpha background,

@CubeAce releasing software before it is suppose to be (according to beta testers everywhere), is common now. The public becomes paying beta testers, and public forums become "free" tech support for those with problems.

It seems that marketing says when it's time to release the software, whether it's ready or not. And then patch, patch, patch away.... until the next "new" release.

I own Resolve 17 Studio, the paid version. When 17 was released, startup load times for the program were LONG. It would load Control Panels even though I check marked "no" and didn't have any of them. Now, all is well, but it took a couple of months before it was usable.

CubeAce wrote on 2/24/2022, 2:41 PM

@Reyfox

DaVinci Resolve is a very different NLE to MEP. I think the more cores the better with Resolve where a Ryzen processor may give better performance than an Intel one for any given price point.

I look at a lot of forums for various editors although I only participate in this one as it is the Magix editors that I use. Again, depending on the use it is put to and the support hardware it has I see problems posted that resemble many problems posted here.

I think it is worse when you buy something tangible like a car with a new engine. Manufacturers often don't respond to known issues until either they are caught out by a governing body or it becomes a safety issue or the warranty period expires.

Sadly it is the world we helped to create. I totally understand what supports the 'Hipster' culture. The only drawbacks are the inefficiencies of 'proven' technologies and the fact they don't them need replacing as often or can easily be repaired so one can suffer it for longer. 🤣😏

@CubeAce yeah... like my 23 year old VW Caravelle van.... it just keeps on running.

I mentioned Resolve because even they have problems/issues. But they work hard to fix them. And it works. I know in a couple of other software I use, they bid out to the lowest bidder to maintain, fix and update. Not effective at all.

But you are right, we've created this world and let it happen. I want to get off of this "merry-go-round"..... I think back to a/b roll editing with the Amiga/Toaster. It was a blast and it worked. I didn't have to worry about crashing in the middle of doing the a/b roll using Pana AG equipment.

@Reyfox

Considering how the PC and Microsoft have evolved I am just grateful that anything of any complexity runs on it at all and at least accessible. I see the announcement that all future editions of Windows 11 will need an online Microsoft account.

Pass the nails please. (where's a coffin emoji when you need one?)

Ray.

@CubeAce these are trying times for sure.... I went Win10 to support new hardware. I doubt I'll go Win11 any time soon. And yes, M$ wants us to go online with them... sell that data!
