Program Requires Extra Component - MPEG2 Codec MainConcept

CarpentersMate wrote on 3/3/2022, 3:21 PM

Hi Gang

For experimentation, I've switched camcorders - trying to get MEP2016 Plus to recognize a similiar Panasonic Camcorder. This one is a Panasonic AG-HVX200K P2 Older HD Camcorder (Limited to 1080). Not surprisingly I recieved the prompt 'Requires MPEG2 Codec MainConcept'. The previous Camcorder was a standard definition Panasonic AG-DVX100B. I was under the impression I already downloaded an MPEG2 Patch? In any event, (from what I understand about the HVX200 P2), this may be a bit more complicated. Some folks take the P2 card out of the camera and plug it into a slot using alternate software? (not sure yet)? Modern HD cameras seem to dump/connect with less complication?

BTW: The AG-HVX200 is a fixed-lens hybrid camcorder released in December 2005 for 60 Hz market and April 2006 for 50 Hz market. The camcorder allows file-based recording onto P2 cards, as well recording SD footage onto traditional MiniDV cassettes.

Any Ideas?

Thank You ...

Hi Mike

. . . . Panasonic AG-HVX200K P2 Older HD Basic Camcorder (Limited to 1080). Not surprisingly I recieved the prompt 'Requires MPEG2 Codec MainConcept'. . . . .

I suspect the tapes have been recorded in DVCPro HD hence the MainConcept codec requirement, however, AFAIK, MEP has never been able to import DVCPro HD, for that you would need Video Pro X which can import DVCPro with a fee for the required codec.

Hello John - (thanx for the comment). I just left an additional comment: Some folks take the P2 card out of the camera and plug it into a slot using alternate software? Would that add anything new to the discussion?

Hello John and others ...

Just to clarify: no the Mini Tape function is a separate SD recording function. This camera is capable of recording in TWO separate formats: Mini DV Standard Definition, 'and' HD 1080 from the P2 Flash Card. Some folks are able to dump their files directly into 'Adobe Premiere' (or) plug the card into a P2 slot (I guess maybe a PCIe slot)? (Or) connect the camera into a Mac which contains 'Management Software P2 CMS 1.4'

However, (unless you know for sure), I'd still like to try MEP 2016 Plus (with the recommeded MPEG2 Codec MainConcept). If it doesn't work, it doesn't work ...

Is there a way for me to check whether I already have that MPEG2 Codec in MEP?

If I don't have it, can you refresh me as to where/how to get it?

Thank You ...

Mike

Hi Mike

. . . .  HD 1080 from the P2 Flash Card . . . .

Most likely DVCPro encoding - if the files on the SD card are a known format, eg AVI, MOV, etc MediaInfo will tell you what the codec is.

Do be aware there is a second potential issue with video from this camera the video may be recorded with variable framerate- MediaInfo will also tell you what the recording framerate type is.

In both cases the video is going to have to be converted, to a format MEP will load and/or change the framerate to constant .

Yes John ...

"the video is going to have to be converted"

Premiere just happened to be designed to actually recognize those native files .... but it was also necessary to develop a program (by Panasonic) for Mac platforms to convert those files as well ...

https://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/sales_o/p2/cms/

No mention of 'Windows' or a 'PC' here ...?

The camera itself, (perhaps in its day) was splendid with numerous Pro Features and Options ...

One more time Ray mentioned: "Help / Check for additional content" (with MEP Opened)? Yes?

I know its a 'long shot'

Hi Mike.

I installed the main concept codec into VPX 12 yesterday doing just that. So it is still available to older programs.

Hi Ray ...

Glad you had luck with the install of 'the main concept codec' Just curious why did you need it?

With regard to my situation, I think John is right. Unfortuately HD was in its infancy when that HVX came out thus they came out with that option. I'll try the install (just for giggles) and see what happens?

Hi Mike.

I don't need it.

Don't normally use it but I don't always do video editing for my own use so sometimes I do projects for local small charities and they sometimes have odd and unreasonable requests.

Also my wife runs a scout group 🤣🤣🤣.

Ok Thanx Ray 😉

Well this experiment is over (thanx for everyone's input)

I installed the 'Main Concept' and actually got the control interface to appear after I powered on the HVX (connected via the IEEE 1394 port). However after a few seconds I got a prompt which indicated the camera wasn't recognized, (or something like that). I'm gonna guess even if I were to find the correct driver for the HVX, (and as John pointed out), the file would still not be recognized. I knew that going into this (just wanted to see) if I could 'luck out' somehow ...

Going back to praying for Ukraine ... 😞

Thank You

Mike
