Program Stops Responding After Slightest Action

Robyn-Kitty wrote on 9/27/2022, 12:19 PM

My program keeps freezing up to the point of being unusable. I am currently using Magix Movie Studio 2023 Suite, having updated it today. (I was using Magix Edit Pro Premium 2022 before, having the same issues.)

If I drag in a clip, it will freeze. If I press play, then stop, it will freeze. If I switch from one tab of the movie to another, it will freeze. If I resize the window, it will freeze.

The teeniest tiniest action will make the program freeze.

I'm not working on a large project. The video uses a song roughly four and a half minutes long. The three clips I've used so far are a few seconds long each. There's barely anything going on and it will freeze.

I've tried turning proxy files on and off. Messed with power usage. Turned off all other programs but the Movie Studio. Updated Windows 10 to latest version. Updated Movie Studio to newest version. I've tried using files from an external hard drive. I've tried using files from the computer itself. I've defragmented the computer. I don't see any drivers that need updating. Nothing is working. This program used to work (Movie Edit Pro Premium did, at least. Until recently.)

Here is my system information.

Device name    WINDOWS-M0C85P4
Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz   3.19 GHz
Installed RAM    16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch    Pen support

Edition    Windows 10 Home
Version    21H2
Installed on    ‎8/‎9/‎2020
OS build    19044.2075
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4180.0

Update 1- I have updated a bunch of drivers with the Driver Easy app and that seems to have fixed the problem, for now. I am still concerned that I may just barely have what's needed for the program to work. I work with ripped Blu-Ray files of cartoons that are about 27 frames per second and songs that are mp3 and m4a audio files. I don't think I have a graphics card, only graphics settings.

@Robyn-Kitty Hi, do you have a graphics card (GPU)? you can find it if you right click the Start button - Device manager, or right click on the Taskbar at the bottom of your screen - Taskmanager - Performance

Ps you should remove the Device ID & Product ID from your comment, this info isn't needed & shouldn't really be shared 👍

@Robyn-Kitty

Welcome to the user to user forums.

As @Former user says, your Device and Product IDs should not be made public; doing so is to risk your computer could be hijacked. Hence I have removed them from your post.

However, I see you have also added them to your signature, along with rather a lot of other data! Please edit your signature to remove them; have a look at either or both of my and @Former user's signatures to see the essential data needed and then please also remove from yours that extra data that is not needed.

Thank you.

I also think @Former user is correct to ask you about a separate GPU. I see your CPU includes an iGPU, Intel UHD 630, which ought to be OK. This page lists the minimum computer requirements to run MMS 2023.

@Robyn-Kitty

Hi Robyn and Welcome to the user to user forums.

As Jeff has alluded to, your Inboard Intel HD630 GPU should cope but it could depend on the file type and how many bits per second is needed to process the file in real time. I have tested using only my own internal HD 630 Intel GPU and it coped with one track of MP4 encoded 4K footage running at 50 frames per second and a bit rate of 100Mb/s.

The latest Intel driver for the HD 630 is version 31.0.101.2111.

This is with the program Settings in the Device Options all set to Intel HD630. It coped even with basic crossover fades and adding basic titling. The problem starts when adding effects from third party plugins that can boost the amount of processing needed or the amount of ram needed.

You say your projects are not long but that doesn't make as much difference as the amount of data processing needed to be used in real time for playback. A file type like H265 (HEVC) needs much more processing power to decode it than an MP4 (H264) needs. Adding an effect would also add the need more ram and more processing power.

Having your files on an additional drive is a good idea as long as it is not One Drive or a similar cloud based drive as they are nowhere near fast enough. Even a physical hard drive would need to be at least a USB3 certified drive connected to a USB3 port.

So the first things I would like to ask is what resolution are your files? HD? 4K? and what file type are they? MP4 or HEVC or even possibly worse Mov? which could have any codec type hiding underneath.

And what is your external hard drive?

Also how much spare free space is on your C: drive as that needs a set amount of space for the program and system swap and temp files to be moved, altered and read while the program is running.

You can try opening Task Manager as I have in the images above while the program is running and see if there are any spikes in any of the components while the program is playing back the project.

Ray.

I checked and it doesn't seem I have one. The IDs have been removed. Thank you for letting me know. (The program is now working after I updated some drivers.)
