Project length / Disc capacity issue

richardb67 wrote on 8/28/2013, 9:31 AM

I've been burning DVD projects using Movie Edit Pro MX Plus for the last couple of years without any issues whatsoever. However, recently when attempting to burn DVD's I've started getting the following message, or similar -

"The project requires ca. 13482 MB of free space. Please insert another CD or shorten the project length."

I now get this message (or similar) even when I attempt to burn a project no more than 3 minutes long, making it impossible for me to burn a DVD! As I mentioned earlier I've never had any such issues before, even when burning projects of 120 mins approx. This issue even happens when using out-of-the box brand new blank DVD's!

I know of the option of reducing the bit rate but the software never allows this, plus I'd be reluctant to lower the quality of video projects now when I've never had to in the past. I should have mentioned that I've uninstalled/re-installed the software to no avail and also download/installed Magix updates; non of which helped.

I'd appreciate any thought/advice.

Cheers,

Richard.

Hi,

One thing you can try is when you go to burn that 3 minute long project, instead of burning it to a DVD, "Encode in Directory"  you will be given a choice of where on your hard drive you want the file encoded.  When it is finished go and look at the file to see how big it is.  If it is indeed huge, you may well have something at the very far end of your timeline that makes it look like a much larger project.  You can easily check that by using "zoom to fill movie length"  and if you get more than 3 minutes on the timeline you are going to need to find out where it is and get rid of it.  If not, you may need to look at your encoder settings.

If the file encoded in a directory seems reasonable, try using something like the free ImgBurn application to burn the DVD and see if that works.  I rarely use the MEP burner to burn a disc because it is pretty flaky at times and I have basically watsted too many DVDs to even use it anymore.

Hi,

Check on the timline you have probably and object or photo or short movie when you cut something small at the end of your project may be the project itself is only 3 minutes but if you have nothing on the timeline may be an hour and puff a scrap or a photo less than second, the movie length is the total time line. You can use Ctrl A to select all.

Hi Richard

Can you post the following screenshots:

   -   the project settings.

   -   the full timeline.

   -   the Burn dialog with the Advanced button window open.

Also what brand an type of discs are you using?

A tip - get hold of some DVD-RW discs for initial burning from MEP, if the video requires further editting or the burn fails for any reason you can erase the disc and re-use it.  Once you have a good burn and the movie is as you want it then copy the disc to DVD-R or whichever type of disc you use (you do not need to burn again).

Thanks

John

Thanks John,
Below are the screenshots you asked for, hope they're correct? If not, please let me know. I should point out that I've successfully burned the project featured in the below screenshots several times in recent months without any problems whatsoever. Therefore I'm puzzled as to why I'm getting this problem now?

I regularly use Philips DVD-RW and TDK DVD-R discs and have never had any issues with either.

Hi Richard

Does anything change if you untick the Smart Render options in your last screen shot?

What is the format, codec and bitrate of you original (source) material?

Hi Ss,
The project featured in the screenshots is made up of 24 seperate video (music) clips and 18 of them are AVI, 5 are mp4 and 1 is WMV. I realise I could cut down the file size of the over all project by converting the AVI's to mp4 but, as I mentioned earlier, this project has burned successfully several times in recent weeks as it is!

Also, even when I attempt to burn a 3 minute mp4 or AVI project I get the same error message asking me to insert another disc or shorten the project length! I couldn't tell you what the codec/bitrate of all 24 video clips I'm afraid!

Forgot to mention - I unticked the Smart Render option but it had no effect unfortunately!

Cheers,

Richard.

Hi Richard

Those settings and timeline look fine.

Try doing a program reset File, Settings, Reset program to default - you will lose any custom filepaths etc however it will enable to eliminate another source of the problem.

Not sure if this will solve your issue, but it's worth a try:
Whenever my MEP starts acting up and showing strange behavior in the Timeline, I stop everything and do a repair install.  In fact, I've come to the point where I think I should just schedule a Repair once a week or so, just as a preventive measure.

Just an FYI...  HTH

Thanks, that could definitely be worth a try.

I've since, sort of, solved things to a degree by following advice from a previous reply. It was suggested I encoded a project in the directory to then find out how big the finished project was. I tried this then experimented by importing the directory-saved project into the timeline afresh and...bingo! For some reason this version burned without any issues!

So it seems in future I need to create a project in the normal way but then choose not to burn it to disc. Instead I'll need to "Encode in Directory". I'll then need to import that version into the timeline and then burn to disc. Seems a strange way to go about things but I'm not going to complain too much as long as it keeps working!

Here's another post that you may find informative:

BTW, among people who do this a lot it's been standard practice for years to burn to hard drive first, then use a third-party burning tool to put the project onto disc- regardless of the software used to create the project. (This isn't just a Magix issue.)  Once I got in step with the prevailing wisdom "out there" I quit creating so many coasters!
