Questions about Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus features

tacoholic2006 wrote on 5/2/2014, 5:13 PM

I used MEP 17 Plus for several years but switched to another brand when I got a new computer for 3 reasons:

1) Poor video performance when previewing transitions, etc.

2) Nagging problem of audio and video out of sync on long clips from my Canon 5D Mk II

3) Mono view of audio instead of 2-channel stereo view on the timeline.

I understand that #1 has been fixed in MEP 2014. Can anybody help me with the others?

Hi

#1    this actually depends on the specification of the computer and the type of video on the timeline - if the computer is not a decent spec quad core with plenty of RAM and the video is HD then this can be a problem - also if the computer is a high end gaming machine then this can also give playback problems..

#2    This should not be happening with MOV files - check your Quicktime is up to date - you could also try turning on Automatically create frametable on import - in the program settings Video/Audio tab.

#3    By default MEP 2014 dispalys video and audio as one track - MEP 17 had video on one track and the audio on the next track down.

. . . . Mono view of audio instead of 2-channel stereo . . . .

I presume you mean you see the 'composite' view ie left / right or surround sound channels channels as a single waveform - this is normal.

If you want to see the individual channels you can - right click the audio track and select Display audio channels or Extract audio channels depending on what you want to do.

This has been available in MEP since (IIRC) version 15.

HTH

For John about point #3,

In MEP2014Plus, "Extract sound channels" and "Display sound channels" both do about the same thing. They put the stereo audio from the video on track 2 and the channels on 3+4, but there is no sound on 3+4. The waveform in the case of "Extract sound channels" is automatically displayed on track 2, no wave forms on tracks 3+4. For "Display sound channels," there is a dialog noting that it could take some time, ok. After completion, the audio is as above on tracks 2 to 4, but no wave form on any track. Right-clicking on track 3 or 4 and selecting create waveform only creates the waveform on track 2. Still no sound on tracks 3+4.

Thus separating channels doesn't seem to work. "Display sound channels" adds 2 tracks so that Audio is on track 2, and each channel is on 3 and 4. But only track 2 has the wave display. The other 2 objects (3+4) are there but appear to be empty. There is no sound from 3+4 when playing back with track 2 muted.

I have done the exercise, separating the channels, successfully in Video Sound Cleaning Lab and Audio Cleaning Lab, but returning the results into MEP as separate channels was not successful. I had to save each channel separately then import them into MEP on separate tracks.

Could you confirm if you have the same problem? I tried MEP2013 and the result was the same.

Below is a screen shot of the audio tracks. The left image was done by "Extract..." and the right by "Display sound channels" then right-clicking on track 3 and creating the waveform.

The next image shows the menu choices:

Thanks,

Hi

@JohnCB

. . . . "Extract sound channels" and "Display sound channels" both do about the same thing. . . .

Display sound channels literally does that - it displays all available sound channels, the actual audio is still in the first track  and if I try to create a waveform I get this message

Irrespective of whether the video has stereo or 5.1 surround sound

Extract sound channels actually seperates the audio to the additional tracks and create waveform will generate the wave display for all channels that have audio as shown in this example with 5.1 surround sound

The video in the example above is from my Sony camera which records surround sound and as you can see I get different reults.

IIRC the track allocations are:

   1   video

2   Left and right audio (stereo) or - Surround front left and right

3   Surround front centre and LFE audio

4   Surround rear left and right audio

Thanks very much for your answers. It appears that Magix has stepped up its game. I paid a lot of $$$ for GV Edius Pro 7 and find there are a couple of things Magix could do that this program can't, and that there wasn't much Edius 7 can do that MEP 17 couldn't. I'm going to sell the Edius and go back to Magix.

Hi,

I don't know what you paid for Edius but it looks expensive. If you are going to buy a Magix product, I suggest that you at least get the Plus version or better still the Premium version. If you want a 64-bit program, then go to Magix Video Pro X6. It has features that more closely resemble Edius Pro 7. If you need to do multicam exiting, MEP can only handle 2 tracks, X6 can do 9.

I suggest reviewing the features of both before purchasing, or downloading and trying the trial version.

One reason I want to back away from Edius is that it has too many features that I don't need, and my concern is that Pro X6 would put me in the same position. What I liked about MEP 17 was the quick & easy edit interface. I estimate that it could do 80%-90% of what Vegas Pro could (the program I used prior), and it served me well. I had planned on looking closer at the Plus version of MEP 2014.

I got an excellent price on Edius 7, which was a major factor.
