Recommendations/Suggestions please for export of short video clips

Xenofex2 wrote on 3/21/2020, 5:03 AM

Is MP4 still the right format to export a short video clip for upload to the family’s WhatsApp group?

I have just, I think, uploaded a 1280 x 720 – 29.97fps clip to the Family Group and await to hear if all the family can see it. It did though make me wonder whether, because these short clips will be just watched on phones, whether they should and if so, how these clips could be ‘downsized’.

I just thought it might be a way to relive past memories with the family in these uncertain times and thus wonder whether anyone has any recommendation and suggestions for export of very short video memories specifically for this purpose?

I am using MEP 19.0.2.58

Just another thought. I do also have Movavi Video Converter so presumably I could use this program to further reduce ... what!!!!

Hi George,

Although I've not used it for the purpose you described (seems a good idea), I've found that Movavi Video Converter does create significantly smaller files (MP4 to MP4) with quite good quality. As you probably know, you can choose the quality required, so I'd suggest experimenting.

Hi George

These are the export settings you need for Whatsapp:

Once you change the mp4 export settings to these you can save this as a preset - click the disk icon next to top dropdown and select Export as preset and give it a name.

Whilst there are two images showing in the screenshot, at the moment I cannot see where access is for that top one.

Attached is a screenshot showing my Resolution dropdown options. Whilst I do not have the 568 x 320 option that you show but guess that this depends on size of the original video file. With my particular video that I was editing today, either side of your 568x320 range I have 640x480 and 480x360. If I chose one of them is that the only area I would need to change?

Hi George

I should create a tutorial on how to create custom presets.

I have the preset uploaded to Dropbox.

Download it, and put it in the following folder:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\VideodeluxeNN_premium\Presets\MxMpeg4Intel

where UserName is the name you log on on to your computer with, and NN is the version number - mine is 26 for the current version.

Start MEP and it should appear in your MP4 export preset drop down list - you may need to click Display all.

John

The first part, I think, has successfully been completed. I have a ‘WhatsApp.pru’ file in my Downloads folder waiting to install.

However I cannot find a ‘AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\VideodeluxeNN_premium\Presets’ file.

I have actioned a Search.

As you can see from my Users/George folder screenshot there does not appear to be any similar folder.

Just to check, I then had a look in ‘Program Files (x86)/Magix’ but there is not even a MEP folder. Within ‘Program Files/Magix’ though there is a MEP folder and within I have 2018,2019 and 2020 folders. I did look in the 2020 one but again there does not appear to be any file structure as you suggest.

So sorry and thankyou for your help, but I am still stuck.

Hi George.

Appdata is a hidden folder - quick way to get into is to type %appdata% in the address bar where use see This PC>Local disk>Users>George.

This will take you directly to AppData\Roaming folder where you will find the rest of the file path.

Note to self: - must remember that not all users have Show hidden folders turned on in Windows File Explorer.

Well I have now passed the second test, but ............................!

Whilst I note there were 1634 items showing within that AppData\Roaming folder, after scanning up and down, I could not even see one with reference to any Magix program, and I have several.

May be easier if I do not send any video clips to my family via WhatsApp, or, test a lower resolution export.

Hi George.

If you have followed @johnebaker's very precise folder list to exactly place that preset it will show up when you select to Export your video to MPEG-4, the dropdown at the top of that export screen, see John's first post to this thread, first screenshot.

Hi,

the easiest way is to export a regular HD size from Magix and use Movavi video convert to create something smaller using only 2 parameters picture size and lowering the bitrate to adjust the quality. This is the fastest way to save time and obtain best result.

@Xenofex2

Hi George,

Here is an alternative that might help.

Create a template project with everything set up the way that you want it for editing and exporting.

  1. New project - give it a name like "Template 568x320"
  2. Import 1 object, say a video and trim it to a few seconds
  3. Make any adjustment to your project settings that you want, like maybe apply track colours, track names, Effects/movie settings, template title, music that you might always want, etc.
  4. File/Export movie/Video as MP4
  5. Change the settings to what John EB suggested
  6. Export
  7. Delete object on track 1
  8. Save the project
  9. Save As and give it the project name that you want for a real project
  10. Import, edit, save, export
  11. The export settings will now always be the one for the template project
  12. Save and Exit
  13. Next time, open the Template project and immediately do a Save As, giving it the name of your new project. Import, Edit, Save, Export, etc.
  14. If you open a new project and not a template, the settings, including export settings, will go back to the default project, not the template

I have several templates set up. One of them has ending credits with sample photos and names of people and other text, with effects. I can easily add it to a new project (comes in as a new movie) if I need it and copy and paste to the main movie, remove the surplus movie when no longer needed, etc.

Another has tracks with track names and colours and various other settings.

Another has Christmas objects for outro with credits.

John,

No but today I have been involved in other activities so have not really had time today to look into it further.

Last night though I did type in '%appdata%' but that took us to over 1600 folders and despite scrolling up and down through them all could not find even one Magix folder, and that despite me having several Magix programs.

Not really an issue as I never got that far but I should add that I am also very cautious of changing things as recently I clicked on something when using another program and have now permanently changed what appears to be the default program for these plug ins. Yes I have since re-set the default for everything but that has not worked but also it mucked up something else. Hence I know I need to make sure I am following exactly the instruction. Reading material for tomorrow methinks, perhaps whilst on the ... 'naughty step'.

But then I now have other suggestions so am sure that the penny must drop for one of them. Hopefully.

Hi

Use %appdata%\Magix this will take you directly into the Magix folder

Scroll down to the VideodeluxeNN_premium folder and open it, then open the Presets, MxMpeg4Intel folders to put the preset into.

I cannot believe it. I must be doing something wrong but cannot spot the obvious. I did as you suggest, and attach a screenshot where I have actioned a Search in 'Local Disc' - no items match my search. (Sunday 01). Trying to see any alternative place to search, I then actioned a search on 'This PC'. As you can see from the second screenshot, (Sunday 02) I got the same answer.

Hi George,

Try using the Run box (or a Command Prompt) to apply the procedure John EB gave you.

Do the following:

1. Press Win + r (i.e. press the Windows key and while holding it press the 'r' key.). This opens the Run Box.

2. Paste (or type) %appdata%\Magix and press Enter.

Did you try Movavi as I and YR suggested a day or two ago?

Further to what has already been written and with reference to your "Search" screenshots, the latter would show nothing if you have the AppData folder "hidden", which it is, by default, in Windows.

Terry @terrypin has given you the easiest method, by far, of locating the folder you need since it bypasses the "hidden folder" problem.

Hi All,

I feel such a dummy! Thankyou all for your help. I obviously needed the 'easiest method', as, with Terry's suggestion, the penny has finally dropped. It worked. I have opened MEP and yes, there in the dropdown is WhatsApp. Many thanks to All.

Fingers crossed, presuming we all come through these troubling times, when we purchase the next upgrade, does one then have to reinstall the WhatsApp template in the 'latest version' or is it automatically updated?

Just a PS. I did also look at Movavi, the Tutorials and FAQ, but could not see any suggestion as to what setting to use. I have raised a Support Ticket and await Movavi's response. Although I now have my solution, just out of interest to anyone, I will update here later with their answer.

Thankyou again to Everyone

Stay Safe

The reason you got it wrong was because you entered %APPDATA%\Magix in the SEARCH bar, not the ADDRESS bar as told by @johnebaker. The address bar is the field just left of the Search in your screenshots. The use of %APPDATA%\Magix will then work just as with @terrypin's solution.

Glad it worked out. Stay safe too

It should stay there, however I would recommend you keep a backup somewhere. I have backs ups of my custom presets, transitions and collages spread over back up drives (multiple redundancy).

Thanks All,

Search Bar, Address Bar, WhatsApp template. I have certainly learnt a lot in this posting.

I note your commens John about the next upgrade. What I tend to do, and will do with this posting is to use Evernote. Having seen various comments about Evernote I finally got my head around it a few years ago, and instead of making notes on bits of paper that in time you cannot recall where they are, I record the tips and comments in Evernote. Anything I see in a Forum posting that I think will be useful to me at some future date goes there and I will make a note against MEP.

That's my backup of the information and will certainly have backups of the download.
