Recording a narration to accompany video.

JudaBenBong wrote on 6/9/2014, 5:59 AM

Greetings all, I have just encountered yet another problem that I have no idea how to overcome (like most others) and the problem is this. I have a video that orginally had a music soundtrack recorded to accompany the video. I'v decided I don't want the music and want to go with a simple narration. The problem I'm encountering is that when I attempt to record the audio I opt to have the video play as I narrate so that I can "keep time" and match the dialogue with the images appearing onscreen but nothing happens. Well, the "nothing happening" is a bit of a misnomer because lots of things are happening just not the things I want to be happening. I run into this a lot.

The video is a short four minute "how to" video comprised of a series of still images (basically a slideshow) showing a step by step process covering the basics on how to build an underground wine cellar using used shipping containers. Without the ability to sync the narration to the video I sound as silly and stupid as the day I aquiesed and bought the Magix 2014 upgrade. Yep, that was a day for the record books. Well, anyhow I could use some help.

In the audio recording dialogue box under step 3 "Recording quality" I check the box labled "playback while recording" believing that this option would give me the ability to watch the video as I record the dialogue. Apparently this is an incorrect assumption on my part.

Can anyone out there give me some pointers how to accomplish this task. Any and all help will be much appreciated.

Hi

No problems here, these are the settings I used (including playback while recording as you have).

What is the specification of your computer, the project settings and have you pre-rendered the video before trying to record the narration?

John

Hi

This is a problem that has been fixed in the latest patch for MEP2014  13.0.4.4, however this patch has introduced a problem with the Sharpening effect not working so you may wish to wait for the next patch if you use Sharpening a lot.

Hi

. . . . I can't figure out is how John has a copy of 2014 and his apparently works without the patch . . . .

Nothing magical about the reason - I was on holiday when the patch came out, by the time I got back home I saw the problems with the patch being raised in the forum so did not apply it.

Hi,

First, I share your view about quality control. Although an enthusiastic user from MEP 11 onwards of this richly-featured and value-for-money video editor, I despair sometimes at the MAGIX developers' apparently poor testing of upgrades and patches.

I too am puzzled by JohnEB's reply. But I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the bug was intermittent or influenced by other factors? As you see in this thread which I raised to report the bug
http://www.magix.info/uk/mep-2014-play-while-recording-not-working.forum.1078810.html
at one stage JohnCB was also sure all was OK, but later found otherwise. (Note that the 'latest patch' being discussed there was the one before the most recent one.)

John: Could that be why you got correct recording behaviour before applying the patch?

Good to see it has solved your immediate problem.

Yes, 5 patches (=6 versions) for the 2014 release is pretty bad but at least they are trying to put things right...!

The other thread you mentioned Terry throws up a few questions but I can only think the reason for it sometimes working prior to the 3.0.4.4 patch is the switching between Wave Driver and Direct Sound in the Program settings as metioned in JCB's first reply.

Hi

There are many good videos on Youtube about using MEP - most relate to earlier versions, however the principles are the same.
