Recording the screen

james22taylor wrote on 9/23/2017, 10:12 AM

OS: Windows 10

Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus : version 15.0.0.107

When recording the screen whilst using an application (in this case DesignSpark Mechanical) that uses special mouse pointers, the special mouse pointers are not recorded. MAGIX screen recorder/capture substitutes the standard Windows pointer. Can this be changed so that the special mouse pointers are recorded - as if recording the screen with a video camera?

Hi

. . . . MAGIX screen recorder/capture substitutes the standard Windows pointer . . . .

There is no setting to change this, however I have tested this with DesignSpark PCB and it does record some of the pointers correctly, but not all eg in the example below the Track pointer is not recorded.

I use Screencast-O-Matic Pro to capture screen recordings and it captures the special mouse pointers correctly, including the Track pointer which MEP did not record, in Design Spark PCB as you can see below.

IMO the results from Screencast are better and the software does not place a heavy load on your system.

Hi,

The best screen recording software is Camtasia Studio and his small brother SnagIt, try the free version is a 30 days full fonction active. Screencast-O-Matic performs well. You can use also Adobe Captivate and Qarbon to screen recorder but this is costly. How many frames per second you record? Try 30 frames to capture and move slowly the mouse cursor to capture all movement.

Thanks everyone for the information. It is much appreciated. However...

I tried Camtasia free and it does indeed capture the special mouse cursor in DSM. Only trouble is that it costs £185.08. Even Snagit costs nearly £50. These applications prove that this feature is possible in a screen capture application so why does the MAGIX screen capture not do it also? I do not particularly want to buy another video editing application at three times the price of the one I am already using just to obtain this one feature.

Hi

Did you try the Screencast-O-Matic?

This is a pure screen capture only, easy to use and saves a mp4 which you then import into MEP.

Cost is very reasonable - currently $29 for 3 yr licence (increases to £36 1st Oct) for the Pro version.

Try the free version first - it will add a watermark and has a time limit on recording.

Hi,

Camtasia or Snagit focus on screen capture and I use it from version 3 may be 10 years ago with Adobe Captivate probably Screencast-O-Matic can do the same quality when capturing remember the free version offer screen capture  and you can use with Magix to continue the montage. I am not try the Pro version. Video software offers screen capture but not focus on this function that means no development. Check on the web probably other software can do the work like qcarbon. Also for 30 days you can use Camtasia 9 demo and probably Camtasia drop a new version in the near future that means another 30 days for free.

Hi,

There is also Debut from NCH. Try it out and if you like it, buy the Home version for 30$. I used the free version until I had to pay. I now use the one from Corel that comes with its video editors and PaintShop pro, only because it came with the programs. But, my preference was Debut. It's quite powerful.

I don't know about capturing the special mouse pointers from DesignSpark Mechanical. Debut has its own mouse pointer and I don't know if there is flexibility. You would have to try it.

I have already looked at some of the NCH stuff so I already had the NHC suite logo on my desktop. I tried Debut and it does indeed capture the special DSM cursors, which is great. Best, cheapest solution I have so far found short of videoing the screen with my Lumix bridge camera and it costing me nothing. I still do not know why the MAGIX people don't implement this feature; so many other screen capture apps seem to be able to do it. Surely it can't be that difficult.

Thanks everybody for your inputs. They have been a big help.

Hi James22taylor,

I use Mirillis Action! screen recorder, they have a "pointer click" animation, you can see the visualization only on the recording.
I recorded the effect for you so you could check how it looks like:
Is this what you are looking for?

james22taylor wrote on 9/28/2017, 10:28 AM

Hello. Thank you so much for your response. The effect that you show is not exactly what I am looking for. I made a video showing my requirements to upload here but, although the upload progress bar finishes, the twirly thing keeps on going forever. Is there a file size limit on video files - I looked for such info on the page but without success. Also there was no objection to my 9.8MB video file when I attempted the upload. I tried uploading it more than once. The video (mp4) was made with 'Debut by NCH'. It does not cost much so I will most likely purchase a copy. If I can not find out how to upload it here I might put in on YT.

james22taylor wrote on 9/28/2017, 10:35 AM

I have just tried to upload a video file (9.98MB mp4). The progress bar went all the way across and then turned green but the twirly thing in the video icon kept on going. I am not sure if it has uploaded ok.

The MAGIX screen recorder in my opinion is appalling. I've never managed to get it working successfully and believe me I've tried. For screen recording I recommend Bandicam it's very flexible and records 4K as well. The big advantage for me is you can record 2 different audio inputs. I find it very useful for my tutorials I can record my voice onto one track and the audio from Samplitude onto another track. https://www.bandicam.com/

I've had good luck with Movavi.

james22taylor wrote on 11/15/2018, 3:10 AM

I eventually settled for OBS Studio. It records the whole screen very well and the sound recording is also good. The only feature, as far as I can see, that it does not do is to zoom in on a particular area of the screen - although I have not checked it for updates lately. It is completely free so I should not complain too much.
