I need to move MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Premium and related files to my D: drive from my C: drive. I am reluctant to simply uninstall and then reinstall but if this is the correct way, that's OK. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Uninstall and reinstall is the only method to use to move any app from one drive to another.
But the default locations for certain parts of the program, like transitions, is drive C:\ and moving them is not advisable since any update of the program which needs access to these “support files” may not be able to find the changed location, with the subsequent potential failure of the update.
It is entirely possible to install the core program wherever the user wishes - mine is on D:\ - but those support files I always leave at the default, C:\.
I back up to One Drive in the cloud and the default MAGIX drive locations automatically sync. This includes hundreds of jpgs, etc. (e.g., clip art). Unfortunately, it is not possible to specify subfolders to ignore in One Drive. If I could delete the individual files on my C: drive, I would do so, but I don't want to delete something needed by the MAGIX software.
Unfortunately, as I understand it, using this approach deletes the files on my computer. (e.g., the site you suggested says that "If you uncheck a folder you are syncing to your computer, the folder will be removed from your computer. The folder and its contents will still be available online." I want the opposite - I want to leave the files on my computer but not sync them to OneDrive.
. . . . I want to leave the files on my computer but not sync them to OneDrive. . . . .
If you do not want to use OneDrive at all there are several options available depending on your Windows 10 version an example is here. The biggest issue is that updates can turn OneDrive back on or even re-install it, especially on the Home edition of Windows.
This was one of the reasons I upgraded to Windows 10 Professional.
Carefully consider re-installing. Depending on when your update service expires, if you re-install and have not got the update/patch files, you will only get the original version of the program. For example, if you have MEP 2020 and have gone over your 12 months update service, you will only get the original version of 2020 from Magix, not the 2 following patches that were issued later.
I now try to save the update/patch files when they come in, in case I need to re-install.
. . . . I thought OneDrive could be uninstalled? . . . .
It all depends on the version of Windows 10 Home ie:
In some versions the un-install option is greyed out and you cannot uninstall it, in which case there are a couple ways to disable / disconnect One Drive.
The root cause of the problem is when setting up Windows 10 for the first time - it wants you to use a Microsoft account instead of a local account and automatically sets up One Drive to back up your documents.
To get the set up to offer the option for a local account you have to disconnect the computer from the network, acknowledge the message there is no Internet and skip the connect to a network option.
An additional problem is once you start with a Microsoft account, the option to create or switch to a local account can disappear - this was the cause of one of me having to re-install Windows again .
I remember installing Windows using a crib sheet my son supplied to avoid certain things. That must have been one of them. It's early on in the instillation process isn't it? My ability to retain facts I have little interest in is quite small. My notebook on the other hand is quite full. It just depends on if I remember whether I made a note of something or not 😁😇.
First, what version are you using and when does your update service expire? See under Help, About, and also note whether you have the basic version or Plus or Premium..
Note what @AAProds mentioned about the hazards of reinstalling.
What, exactly, are you backing up? Your link mentions My Documents. Is that what you are backing up or the entire C drive?
MEP is normally installed under:
C:\Program Files\MAGIX
unless you changed it, not in My Documents. So, if you're backing up My Documents, then you're not backing up the program, so no need to reinstall it elsewhere.
If you have a recent version, like MEP2020, then the VideoContent is under something like:
C:\Documents\MAGIX\Videocontent\Movie Edit Pro Plus
Is this what you are referring to? This will be approximately 8 GB. Is this getting backed up? If so, then if you can reinstall, do so. Watch my tutorial on Getting Started in MEP:
In the tutorial, I used the default location for the VideoContent. Then for me, I reinstalled and put the Video Content on another drive.
@emmrecs Hi Jeff. Note that doing the above includes transitions, templates, etc. and MEP finds everything.
VideoContent is what used to come under:
C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2016 Premium
but is now under the location that I mentioned above. Previously, everything would be duplicated when a new version was installed. Now, new versions simply update the VideoContent files, thus no duplication. However, this location is not under ProgramData.
Also during installation, you can define where you want your project files, etc. This is normally under My Documents and you definitely want all of this to be backed up automatically. These are files that you create or are created while doing a project. Lose those and you'll be very unhappy.
Hi John - Your guidance looks like what I need. I did, indeed, mean the C:\Documents folder (rather than My Documents). I have MEP Pro Premium which I believe is a 2019 vintage - at least that is the last date on the copyright statements. I will take a look at your tutorial and go from there. Many thanks - Reid
. . . . Ah, so that’s why your forum contribution output rate is so impressively high - there’s at least two of you! . . . .
Typo!
I did have a doppleganger when I was at uni, he was a local and he lived in the next village to where I was living - caused a few hilarious 'mishaps' in town.
Your video was what I needed. I uninstalled MEP and reinstalled it, moving the templates, etc. from the default locations to a place that was outside of OneDrive's probing gaze. Thanks again. Cheers. Reid
