[Resolved] Updates (.211) and headaches

gmlotkow wrote on 1/7/2018, 12:28 PM

Seem to be having a problem with this latest update. Many of the free effects that came with it, seem to corrupt the program or something.

I went as far as to wipe the PC (Win 10) and reload everything starting from scratch. Just like starting the PC from new. Needed to load all my Abode, Office, Magix from the beginning. Downloaded Magix from the download site, install it, do several updates, download extra data, perform more updates, then the error starts again. The error that wont go away, it's I can't close or exit the program, I get a pop-up stating the program is busy. My preferences won't save, because I can't exit the program correctly. Can't exactly determine how long that process will take, because the only way I can shut it down is from the task manager.

Anyone else?

4 hours later..

I wiped the disc again, and only reinstalled the windows 10 and Magix. With the license I have I started and it downloaded .148, I then updated to .154. I did not download any additional plugins. I was able to close the program after each install. When I opened Magix again, I immediately go a pop-up for an additional update, that took me me to .211. Once again, no additional plugins were installed. Verifying .211 I now cannot exit the program, a pop-up states "the program is busy".

Whats going on?

Hi

Not sure why you are having that problem but please do not start a duplicate post with the same topic. Best is to add a comment which will come out below your initial post, rather than edit it.

Thanks.

Anyone think by starting with the trial version rather than the videoprox_dlm_8541.exe would make a difference? Update with my license from there?

Tuesday, and still trying.

I am now successfully at 15.0.4.176, trying to upgrade to 15.0.5.211. I'm missing 15.0.5.195. Can anyone send me this patch, or do I not need to install it. It is one of the only things I have not done.

Hi Greg,

Normally, the latest update is the only one that you need. Just update to it. Can't think of why you have been having problems. Check that the ini file was renewed with the new install. It is sometimes the cause of problem. It is under approximately:

C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Video_Pro_X8

as

Video_Pro_X.ini.

This is the same place that you will find the .pmly files which are the various windows setups (F10, F11, F12, and named). You should keep a copy of these and the ini file that works somewhere. If the ini file becomes corrupt, you can just try replacing it.

Good luck!

I've scrubbed the system disk several times, starting with a fresh win 10 install. Everytime I get to .211, it won't let me close the program, I got to kill it with the task mngr. I don't understand why, at all.

Have you checked to see if the News window is open but hidden behind the main program window. Minimise the main window to see, or check for a running process in task manager.

John, I see no .pmly files, only .umly. Also, the News Feed Info folder there, I see an entry with today's date, even when I have News window unchecked.

It contains this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<news generation="20180110" version="3.0"/>

Another thing I just noticed. During the update process, starting from the original download, I always check the Help - Update Online - automatic reminders off. I want to manually update, checking to insure that I can install the extra content that is available to me. Using .176, the program would start, open the main screen, dialog boxes, but no timeline, then the Magix clock would start, as if it were searching online, then stop, then the timeline would appear.

For the first time this morning, it did not do that.

An obvious question that begs to be answered is, since I've been using VPX 8 since it started, and I purchased the update (as currently advertised) in December 2017, does that make me eligible for the VPX 9 update at .211?

Hi Greg,

Still no idea why you are having problems. I can only suggest that you raise a ticket with Magix and run and submit Magix' Syscheck and let Magix see if there is not some conflict with something in your computer.

Since you upgraded/renewed in December, you should receive all updates and upgrades, including .211.

The pmly files will only be there if you saved a windows setup under Window, Window arrangement, Save in VPX. I have 2 monitors and several different arrangements and I can quickly switch between them using F9 (default) F10, F11 and F12 or load any by name that exceed this. If you never saved a setup, then there will be no pmly file.

A ticket is on the books, I even got to speak to someone in Reno NV yesterday regarding my issues. They stated my ticket would be escalated, we'll see. Funny thing, months back, when .176 was released, I took the upgrade to find out the program would not close after a dvd was created. We spoke about that, you recognized that it was a bug. Shortly after a patch came out, .195 for a short while, I missed it, and now it's .211 (where I am having trouble). I wish I could get .195 to see how it affects my upgrade process.

I'm actually back to where I started months ago.

I updated my profile.

Hi

I'm missing 15.0.5.195. Can anyone send me this patch, or do I not need to install it. It is one of the only things I have not done.

Ironically that is the patch that lists that it "fixes many crashes on exiting the program". As the patches are cumulative .211 should include that however....

I presume you are checking the version number in Help>About to make sure that the .211 patch is actually installing correctly as there are instances where re installs have left people stuck on the trial version?

So I reset the disc again, today, installed .56, upgraded to .154, upgraded again, it skipped .176, .195 went to .211, then got busy again, could not close the program. Again.

You would think by now, with the tickets I've submitted, spoken to tech support, indication in this forum, Magix would step up and help me out. They can see I've got the upgrade, and I should be able to access Video Pro X9. So far I've got nothing from them. You think they would send me the direct link to VPX9?

What's my next step?

No. Not yet. I'm pretty exhausted with this problem. It's a lengthy process having to do these resets, downloading, installs. I need to get some of my material processed, edited and burned to DVD. I use this for public school performing arts programs. I'll give Magix support another few day to try and get back.

What if I deactivate now, then startfrom the latest trial download, and update from there?

Also, remember that you should be able to step back and forward in your installation and update process using Windows System Restore Points.

Alright I got the latest update to work finally. This is what I learned.

You must have at least two hard discs, I have 4+, the main one is solid state, and it's my system disc, where I store all my programs. Another is a disc dedicated to Raw Data, the video I shoot. The 3rd, is where I keep all my personal data, Magix project data and everything else. The 4th is a usb backup disc. I do this because I learned earlier, should you have to reset, or update your computer, you only have to do it to one disc, you never worry about losing data. Of course, you have to become an accountant to know where all your program data is stored, where to download it from, the keys or serial numbers for each, and so forth. I have a master .txt file where I keep these notes, and a separate backup disk where I keep all my downloads.

I'd recommend anyone who is having problems with the current update to start with above, then proceed to this next step.

Open up the PC and unplug all your discs except the system disc. This guarantees you never lose your data. Update, or reset Win 10, completely wipe the disc, and start fresh. This get rid of any conflicting registry keys, and all that hidden stuff you don't know about. You will never find all those little things that can screw you up, Believe me, it's quicker this way.

With the new Win 10, and all its updates, first go to your Magix account and download your VPX software, then install it. Do not install any additional plugins. This next part might be tricky, but it worked for me. In your backed up downloads folder, find: video_pro_x_update_15.0.4.176.exe (I believe it's the last VPX download that would show up in your downloads), then install it. (by now you should be 8 - 10 beers into it, if not, you better start).

Now, go to help, update online, and things begin to download, it informs you about .211, all the features...you will get a choice, update now, or update after closing the program. CHOOSE UPDATE AFTER CLOSING THE PROGRAM. Its this step that made it work for me. Then exit VPX, and it will begin to install. Hold your breath. When it starts again, choose file exit. It should close. (for two weeks this did not work for me, I had to kill it in the task manager).

Once the program closes, shut off the PC, open her back up and connect all your discs, try a sample edit, choose, file exit, it should close. If you've gotten this far, you are good to go. Start loading all your other programs back.

Then, with that final beer, you should feel like you have a new PC, with VPX running correctly.

disclamer: this worked for me, I'm only a day into it, lets see how long this will last. If you did everything as above, you will be ready to tackle the next update, with less pain. Edit are pending, I need another be....

Odd, nowhere on my C: drive is there an indication that I am using VPX9, as advertised on the Magix webpage. Also, I started to get the same popup stating they extended the update for $149.00. Using Help-About, I see .211. Should I be looking elsewhere to verify I actually am using VPX9?

Hi Greg,

Pleased to see that you are back up and running.

You have VPX9 if you have patch .211. Magix dropped the naming/numbering a while back, but that just created more confusion, so I guess that they are using 9 in the adverts. Basically, the intention was to not have to reinstall the program, just upgrade things within it. I, too, received the advert for VPX9. It seems that most companies that I am involved with keep trying to sell me what I already purchased. Just click in the box to not see this news again.

I can't say for the AVI file, but it looks like you are missing a CODEC for GOPRO files in your reinstallation. Could it be something from them that is required?

About your method for keeping files, I do somewhat the same. My C drive has the program and Soundpools, so I backup the Soundpools, and of course, the programs. There is just one flaw. If you have purchased anything, like Soundtrack Maker Styles, or saved user-made transitions, effects, text styles, etc., these go under the:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8

folder in sub-folders. You need to back these up or a reinstall will cause them to be lost. There may also be stuff in AppData, like the windows layouts that I mentioned and possibly things like 3DMaker videos go there by default, if I remember correctly. You may need to hunt some things down from a complete backup file later when you notice that something is missing.

Note the 8 in the above path. Like you I have 9, but it is never mentioned as 9 just uses 8. There was no new installation.

I updated my Magix Pro X from .56 to the next because I was having problems with the upper task bar not working when loading the program sometimes, everything else works, and I had to restart Pro X. After I updated to version ??, I couldn't close Pro X whether I had a project on it or no project, I have to use the task manager to close Pro X, the icon won't close it either, it say's it is busy. So I re-installed Pro X, and started a new download, I didn't realize until today instead of starting with the .211 the download is the .56 version. Same problems existed with task bar, so I tried to update again. This time the update said, I already updated and a file would have to be repaired, and after it said it was completed I was still stuck with version .56 whether I used instant or update when program is closed even after a windows re-boot. Today I un-installed Pro X7, and Pro X8 and any Magix program listed. Now after installing Pro X, I was able to update to the next 2 versions. Now with .211 with no programs loaded in Pro X, I cannot exit the program. I do not have this problem with version .56. I sent a email to support and was hoping that was a download problem, but I get it with the update like a few other people on here. Busy? I didn't load anything yet. So now I have to choose between a intermittent upper task bar not working or a close the problem problem. I'll use the task manager, because I can't do anything without the upper bar not working.
