Dear fellow musicians,

I am totally inexperienced in this...and thats why i apologize in advance in case my questions souns silly here.I have the Roland rp101 digital piano which has midi in and out  outputs.I bought the USB midi interface cable to connect it to my computer (windows vista). In the manual of my piano i read that i have to install midi drivers which i cannot find anywhere for the specific piano(RP101).When i connect it to my computer i can hear the sound that it is beeing recognized(without beeing asked to install any drivers) but then, when i turn on my magix music maker(premium) i dont even know how to start and how to make the programm recognize it.I want to be able to use the piano sound of my own digital piano ,as the sounds for piano of the magix music player are not that convincing according to my taste.is that possible? And again sorry for all these amateur questions.Thank you for your attention.regards yannis

Hi Yannis:

Okay, so you've connected the RP-101 via USB, and you hear the little sound that Windows makes upon detection?  If so, that's a good thing.

I've gone to Roland's website: http://www.roland.com/support/article/?q=information&id=62797614 and have read the information regarding Vista driver compatibilty and it says there are no plans to provide Vista drivers.

That being said, let me run you through a few things you need to do first *before* connecting your keyboard to MMM.

1. Go online and download the universal ASIO drivers.  ASIO4ALL (specifically: ASIO4ALL 2.11 Beta2) from here:   http://www.asio4all.com/ and install them first.

2. Find out the name of your sound device.  Depending on your computer setup, it could either be integrated (motherboard) or a sound card (discrete).

3. Start MMM and on the menu at the top, click File\Settings\Program Settings\Audio\MIDI\Audio Playback and select ASIO as your driver.  Right below that, from the list of options, select ASIO4ALL v2 as your primary driver interface.

4. On the right side of the menu, under Output Device, select your sound device (*your sound device* followed by, Synth A as your output) and then under Input Device, (*your sound device* followed by, MIDI IO [1000] as your MIDI input.

At this point, I recommend that you close MMM, connect your keyboard and re-start the program.

Hopefully, you'll get some positive action from all of this.

Good luck.

Griff

In this case, to record the voices from your piano, you will need to connect the Audio OUT jacks on the back of your piano to the (blue) Line-IN jack on your computer (assuming you have one).  If you don't have a Line-IN jack on your computer, you may need to get a USB-audio/MIDI interface to make the connection - preferably in stereo.

MIDI will not transmit the audio from your piano.  You would only be using the piano as a MIDI controller to play software instruments on the computer.
