Screen capture audio problem

terrypin wrote on 5/16/2017, 2:48 AM

I tried recording a web video, using MEP's screen capture facility. But darned if I can set MEP up to record the audio. As you see it only seems to allow input from my two microphones.

I have a similar problem in Camstudio (both 2.0 and 2.7), so - unless MEP simply doesn't have this ability - I suspect it's down to some Win 10 setting or configuration issue. Much of this audio stuff is a black art to me. But is it perhaps that these recording programs (CS and MEP) are dependent on such OS settings? If so, how can I set 'stereo mix'?

In contrast, my audio recording app, GoldWave, does allow me to select my 'internal' audio. The label 'LOOPBACK Speakers...' makes sense too.

Success! A short while after posting I found the solution (on the Tom's Hardware site, from  poster Laptop_Nerd). I adapted that, adding a crucial extra step, and here's my summary for anyone else who hits the same problem. (And for me if I forget!)

1. Right click on the speaker icon and select Recording Devices, to display the Sound dialog.
2. Right click on the current default, (in my case an AKG mic)
3. Enable 'Show Disabled Devices' and 'Show disconnected Devices'. (In my case the former was unchecked.)
4. Select the Stereo Mix option, now accessible, and click Properties.
5. In the Stereo Mix Properties dialog:
- Click Listen tab and remove the check on "Listen to this device" if it has check on it.
- Click on Levels tab then set Microphone Boost to 0.0dB.
- Click Apply and OK.

Still like to hear any comments re my other points about MEP interface, settings, etc.

Hi Terry

. . . . Click on Levels tab then set Microphone Boost to 0.0dB . . . .

What is the purpose of this step?

Are you recording the mic as well as the web video audio?

. . . . I found the solution (on the Tom's Hardware site . . . .

Did you use the Search option of the forum? 😭

I assume it's just to set a balanced default, L/R.

Are you recording the mic as well as the web video audio?

No. So when I've finished this set of a dozen captures (German lessons for Janet to use) then I'll set my default back to my mic. I suppose I could mix them but I'll leave that aside for now. Spent hours on this yesterday, so just glad to have sorted it.

P.S: I actually ended up doing it in CamStudio 2.7, which I've installed to replace 2.0 and with which I'm more familiar for captures. OT, but do I recall right that you also have CS?

No, Google. Would I have find the answer in some past thread here?

Hi Terry

Yes many, this is a regular topic for MEP, Photostory and MMM.

. . . . Click on Levels tab then set Microphone Boost to 0.0dB . . . .I assume it's just to set a balanced default, L/R. . . .

The Boost option is to set more amplification for mics that have a low output eg some moving coil or low powered electret or condenser mics. It should not need adjusting for USB mics.

. . . . Are you in that luxurious Portmeiron Hotel? . . . .

No, we are in one of the houses overlooking the river, however we can see the hotel from our balcony. Walking to Harlech tomorrow.
