Serious bug in MEP 2016?

terrypin wrote on 2/8/2017, 3:09 AM

Can other MEP 2016 user reproduce what seems to me to be a quite serious bug in MEP 2016 please?

My only hesitation after several consistent tests is that I've only moved up to MEP 2016 recently, so I'm surprised that longer term users haven't raised it already. But maybe I've just missed those discussions?

I tried MEP 2014 and MEP '2017' (latest patch) and they don't have the problem.

To reproduce:

Import two identical JPGs.
Apply two or more obvious video effects to the first, such as my example of a high contrast and a fast zoom.
Use right-click > 'Copy video effects...'.
In the 'Select effects...' dialog, de-select the zoom (by unchecking Width and Height) and click Continue. 5. Use right-click 'Paste video effects...'.

The second object still has the zoom.

This may force me to move up to '2017' earlier than I wanted to. I was putting off because of the significant file and settings (and macros!) re-organisation that needs in my case.

Hi Terry

Is MEP 2016 up to date - latest patch is 15.0.0.107 ?

I use this method of propogating effects a lot and have never had an issue with it.

I cannot replicate what you have described following your instructions exactly - the copy effects selections dialog I get has 4 options for the zoom as shown below

Yours appears to be missing 2 options.

What a relief - thanks for coming back so promptly, John!

It doesn't seem long since I last updated, following an automatic message when loading MEP. I've been assuming that would happen again if there was another update. But on using Help > Update online I found that wasn't true. Has the automatic prompt about patches now stopped?

Anyway, I was delighted to find that after updating the problem was resolved. 🙂

My 'Select effects...' dialog remains the same as before. I always add zoom KFs in Size/Position, whereas I expect you used Camera/Zoom shot? They seem to give those respective dialogs, presumably because the latter involves changing the selection too.

Hi Terry

I did use the Camera/Zoom option and also tried the zoom manually using Size Position to change the width/height of the image and no change of left or right settings and I still got the X-pos and Y-pos options in the dialog.

Can you give more details on how you adjusted the zoom.

Hi John,

After adding the first effect (contrast in that example) I just did the following:

  1. Opened the Size/Position dialog.
  2. With marker at start, set the first KF by clicking the icon.
  3. Moved marker to end and replaced 100 with 120, automatically setting the other KF.

My query re patch update messages?

Hi Terry

Thanks for the details - using your method I note that you are using Size/position as % units - in my first reply I was using pixels.

Following your procedure I get a different set of options to those using pixel units however it is still different to yours

. . . . Moved marker to end and replaced 100 with 120, automatically setting the other KF . . . .

Which 100 Width or Height are you adjusting?

Depending on which one you adjust I get the following:

  1. If you adjust the Width % value only, the copy effects dialog has X-pos as shown below - note the change in the Top value - Left remains at 0 - the image is moved to centre the image vertically

  2. If you adjust the Height % value only, the dialog has Y-pos as an option and the image is moved to centre it horizontally ie the Left value is changed and the Top value remains at 0.

  3. If you adjust the Height first to 120 then adjust the Width to eg 121 and then reset the Width to 120 you then get both X-pos and Y-pos in the copy options dialog however the Left and Top values behave as in 1.

  4. If you adjust the Width first to 120 then adjust the Height to eg 121 and then reset the Height to 120 you then get both X-pos and Y-pos in the copy options dialog however the Left and Top values behave as in 2

Seems the more we delve into this the more complicated everything gets 😬

. . . My query re patch update messages? . . .

AFAICS, updating appears to be on a phased basis - this would make sense to avoid overloading the update servers - so MEP will get the update notification at some point. IIRC mine was after 3 or 4 sessions of a cold start.

Excepting the bug where MEP 2017 lost the Update Online option - see this topic and my last post in it - it specifically refers to MEP 2017.

HTH

Hi John,

Wow, I had no idea there were such subtleties involved! I didn't look any further than setting zoom to 100, which I assumed would simply increase both width and height by 120%, and centre the result.

I'm using my iPad now but will explore your steps on the PC tomorrow.
