SF 15 Pro Suite

sirshambling wrote on 2/13/2021, 8:11 AM

I see Magix are now promoting this new version of SF Pro. As a buyer of SF 14 I have been very disappointed about Magix support for the current version.

The Channel Converter module which I use a lot has NEVER worked properly in SF 14.

Now I suppose it will never work in SF 14 as development will be switched to SF15.

But why should I buy SF 15? After all Channel Converter might not work in SF 15 either!

So will I be spending more money with Magix? No I certainly will NOT.

Where @sirshambling? Audio Studio-15 is common knowledge, but no Pro 15 publication date that I am aware of. But Magix does not tell me everything.

Thanks @sirshambling

The USA notification maybe pending.

@sirshambling Magix releases a new version of it's software every year. They do since the their beginning in the mid 1990s. You get the software you buy and then some patches and that's it. No free updates for years.

rraud wrote on 2/13/2021, 2:31 PM

In Magix 'speak', Updates are free (a new build of an existing version number to fix bugs, 'Pro 14, build 130', for instance). An 'Upgrade' is a new version number.. Pro 15 in this case.

New version numbers were less frequent in the Sonic Foundry and Sony days (prior to 2016).

sirshambling wrote on 2/14/2021, 6:27 AM

The first SF product I ever bought was SF 5 many years ago in the old Sonic Foundry days and I have faithfully bought every new version since.

So SF 15 will be the first time ever I haven't bought a new version of SF but I just don't trust Magix not to screw up a feature and then fail to correct their mistake.

A shame.

@sirshambling It's usually a good idea to skip upgrades of Magix softwares for 3-5 years. You might miss some new features over this time period and even some important bug fixes but you'll get much more for your money since one upgrade after five years costs the same as an upgrade after one year and it will get you five years of new features, bugfixes (and sadly new bugs 😉). Don't throw your money out every year.

The information on the new version is very sparse. I'd be interested in a new batch converter, one which would work as a background process, for example (a request I made long ago...), but there are really no details about what is new. How do I know if I should pre-order? Or care at all? Tell me about the "And much more..." That'd be nice. Makes me wonder whether Magix actually wants to sell, or whether they think everyone will upgrade no matter.

sirshambling wrote on 2/21/2021, 10:42 AM

I think the only person who might know whether SF 15 has any sort of working converter would be @rraud who seems to have had access to the beta.

I don't think Magix care at all about their ordinary customers - they just your money and my money!

rraud wrote on 2/21/2021, 11:59 AM

The new Pro-15 batch converter is more intuitive and seems faster in my test runs than the former, and has the option convert to multiple formats in one job,, for instance, a Wave, Flac, MP3, ect, ect.. even in multiple resolutions (for instance MP3 files in 128kps VBR and 320kps CBR). There are a few minor UI bugs that need to be addressed though. The remote record window is back, which was removed starting with (Sony) SF Pro-11. The UI is sightly different, nicer than before IMO, in looks and with more options.
The disappearing 'File' menu bug still exists, (build 13) but that 'should' be fixed by publication. The broken channel converter now works as it should, The marker issue has allegedly been addressed as well, but I did never experienced that abnormality in Pro 14.

@rraud Any new metadata fields? It'd be nice to add descriptions, weblinks, and album art in addition to what's already there. (And to be able to batch that to all the versions.) Thanks much.

@rraud
Is the "Instant Action" window now customizable by the user?

If Sound Forge Pro 15 has multichannel FLAC support (open, edit, and save), then I will upgrade. Otherwise, I will have to use other software.

rraud wrote on 2/21/2021, 3:38 PM

The "Instant Actions" has been expanded and includes; Workspace, Import. Cleaning, Effects, Editing, Mastering, User Entries and Export. Some of the categories appear to be a work-in-progress on build 13, so it appears it will be more useful depending on the user's needs. Check out the Pro 15 trial when it's published.

btw, the internal help menu now installs without also installing the 32 bit version.

Thank you for your very helpful info on the Converters in SF 15 @rraud.

But I recall clearly that the Channel Converter worked in early builds of SF 14 too - until it was broken in a build that the changelog announced it had been "improved"!

So there is no reason why the Magix software engineers couldn't break it again in SF 15.

My motto with Magix now is "once bitten twice shy" - no upgrade to SF 15 for me. I don't trust the company or it's engineers.

Wow... that upgrade looks pretty lackluster. Don't think there has been a compelling upgrade for SFP since v12, mostly for VST3 and 64-Bit.

I would like to see less clunky looking toolbar icons.
This may not be a common request, but the ability to save to ALAC would be nice too.

That is always a matter of opinion. People with eye problems will be happy about it.
The silver bullet is definitely scalability.

I wonder if this is hint as to what Sound Forge Pro 15 might look like on its release next month. Totally agree with @Walter.I about scalability.

Based on the Pro-15 (beta) build 13 and my preferred custom layout. Basically the same as Pro 14. I had the legacy peak meter range set different and the toolbar icon arrangement are not exacta the same.

the ability to save to ALAC would be nice too.

Do not hold yo' breath. Apple's ALAC is not as universal as MP3 or AAC as an end user format.

Depends what you mean by "built in". Ozone is still a third-party VST plug-in and is included with AS and Pro. Same as SF-14 AFAIK.
