Sharpness Blur does not function after latest patch for 2014 13.0.4.4 and program repair fails.

Hi All

Disturbing to see from the German members that the Sharpness / Blur function no longer has an effect at export and a subsequent repair installation of the program fails. Support have acknowledged the problem but can not say when (or if??) it will be repaired!

Only solution is to do a system restore or reinstall and patch with the earlier patch.

Of some help - I have found that the global Sharpening in Movie Effects does stick so you could sharpen a section or clip on the timeline and export and re import the result.

I am also disappointed to see that the Rt. Click > "Display" surround tracks problem I reported some time ago, that causes the sound tracks for overlapped (Cross faded) clips to stair step onto lower tracks, is still not fixed.

Thanks for the heads up. That's a serious bug. And it will be very noticeable in the project I'm half way through.

Last night, I remember thinking after sliding the sharpener to 100 on a very similar clip that I'd sharpened a day earlier that I couldn't see any obvious diffrerence this time. It's not just on export, it's apparent in the monitor. I haven't tested other effects but maybe some of those are broken too?

Presumably you reported? I'll do so too right now.

Hate the idea of reverting, so can only hope it gets fixed really quickly.

Very prompt feedback from Magix Support to my ticketed report::

"Yes, indeed a very unpleasant bug that snuck in with this patch. We just
reported and assigned it to development today. Whether you will already notice
it in the program's preview monitor depends on the video mode you're in. If
you're in the hardware-accelerated mode, the program will still lead you to
believe it has been applied, but if you're in VfW mode (which truly reflects
what your export will look like), you will see that the effect is broken.
Sorry about that. Hope this can be fixed soon and there will be a timely
patch."

I checked again and contrary to Ralf's comment, even though I am using hardware accelerated mode, there is no sharpening displayed in the monitor.

Yes I fell foul of this in the weekend. I have not reported it yet as the German members indicated that Magix were well aware.

Contrary to what you have found with HWA, I can confirm what Ralf has said although his comment about "Vfw mode truly reflecting what the export looks like" worries me that we should always use this mode when we are doing something like critical colour grading and brightness / contrast adjustment because I have noticed that HWA mode does look subtly different to Vfw in the preview monitor.

As for other bugs in the new patch I have to admit that I am getting some strange effects in Contrast / Brightness / HDR adjustment preview, where I get a sudden unexplained brightening of the preview that can not be changed by adjustment, requiring resetting and reapplying of the effect. This may be related to an applied plugin like New Blue Colourfast interacting with the magix tools but I have also seen it after applying Mercalli Pro stabiliser. Too early to tell whether this is something to do with my system and hardware as I did a graphics driver update around the same time, but keep an eye out for it.

Something else weird is that taking the HDR blur control down to near zero brings up a grid of faint vertical bars or bar code overlaid on the preview monitor, again with a Mercalli stabilised clip. Still trying to pin these occurrences down , but I will follow up with Ralf.

Strange indeed. Can you see any significant differences in the other key settings shown here please, which I assume are the relevant ones?

Nothing there that would cause any difference as far as I can see except perhaps that you have interlace processing selected and I don't because I work with progressive footage. Selecting it does not make any difference here anyway. My other differences are just spacebar / cursor behaviour.

Thanks for checking, Peter. Automatic intrelacing made no difference here either. Nor various other temporary changes I tried. I was hopeful about Video/Audio > Reduce bitmap resolution... but no joy.

The only slider that does show up in the preview monitor is Artistic Blur.

Anyone else tested this Sharpness dialog please?

Although it's academic (as it doesn't get the sharpening tool back), it will frustrate me until I discover why no settings let me see sharpening in the monitor!

Could it be the nVidia settings? Not that I plan on fiddling, as I don't understand most of them!

Hi Terry

I am pretty sure the reason is that you are on XP and I am on Vista. The difference is that a lot of the hardware accelerations of the Video effects in the later versions of MEP are DX11 based and XP does not support DX11. If I select "Always use DX9" then my monitor does not show the sharpening in HWA mode. If experimenting please Note that I have to change this then reboot the program to see the change.

Also I think the 8800GT only supports DX10 anyway.
