"Shot Match" function in 2017 MEP versions

Recycler wrote on 10/8/2016, 4:06 AM

Hello.  I wondered if anyone who has already bought MEP 2017 Plus has worked with the new  "shot matching" capability and could comment on their experience?  This is the only clear product improvement that might justify me upgrading from 2016 Plus with which I am pretty happy - but I am a little cynical perhaps about how good a consumer-priced algorithm can be at a job which normally takes a great deal of careful manual work. I fear that all shots being matched would be pushed down to the lowest common denominator, rather than any attempt being made to pull them up to that of the best. Also, is there a way to indicate to the program what you wish to be regarded as the "best" clip, or is that choice made by the software?

Hoping to be positively surprised!  Regards & thanks   - Mike -

Hi

From my testing of the Shotmatch function I would say:

It works well in a lot of circumstances, however the degree of match accuracy has limitations, as in any colour matching technique, eg the second image below is virtually impossible to match to the first - the difference is too extreme and colours are missing - they were taken about the same time of day on two consecutive days.

. . . . I fear that all shots being matched would be pushed down to the lowest common denominator . . . .

This depends entirely on the source image and range of differences in those to be corrected.

Overall it works wellsubject to the limitation above - this limitation is also present when colour correcting manually.

My experience is similar. I have two shots with very different exposures, no color change, and it doesn't work. I saw it work once. My screen looks different than the screen on this video.

I hope they can fix this in an update or patch!

@anthony-magliocco

Hi

. . . . I hope they can fix this in an update or patch! . . . .

We need more information:

  1. Computer specification - processor make/model, graphics card or chipset, RAM,  hard drive configuration, sizes and free space?

  2. Windows version and is it up to date?  Press and hold down the Windows key and the R key - in the dialog that opens type in winver and press enter.

  3. Software full name and version number - as found under Help, About . . .

  4. A screen shot of your Shot match dialog - it is not helpful referring to a video (for which the link provided does not work)
  5. Examples of the 2 images your are trying to match would also help.

Shot match does work well within certain restrictions - however occasionally it can pull something out of the hat as shown in this extreme example.

Also please read this post before replying and add any other information you think may be relevant.
