Should I be changing any default settings before export?

Xenofex2 wrote on 11/24/2013, 5:02 PM

I have now exported a number of relatively short home movies to the quicktime format, but I notice that when viewing them on playback, in the quicktime format, there are to me noticeable jumpiness in the viewing that is not there when watching it in Magix Movie Pro 2014 before export.

Having also some while ago put together family audio visuals, I am aware that in that case the pictures used should not be too large or playback sticks, but I cannot think it is the same in this case! (Most of the Movies were recorded on the camcorder and then transferred to VHS before importing them into MEP.) I also am aware that in some frames the playback seems to be suffering from the moire effect so wonder whether I should be ticking any specific boxes or changing any of the default settings when exporting that could solve both of these issues?

I don’t know anything about video and have just accepted the default setting when exporting which appears to be 1920 x 1080 & the Frame Rate is 25. I do not want to export to DVD as aware in the past after just a few playbacks there have been problems with the disc. I do not want all the time and effort in the initial preparation wasted, and so choose a format that can be played back on a computer.

Any suggestions please?

Hi

Have you tried playing back the .mov files you have created in another player? I find that movs I have created in MEP sometimes play back jerky in Quicktime player but are fine in VLC player.

How did you arrive at this "Default" setting? There are a lot of default export templates available depending on target file types and different resolutions.

Please use the free app called Media Info (set to the text option) and analyse and copy the specs of your output file and input video media to your reply.

Cheers

Hi & Thankyou Scenestealer

Thankyou for the suggestion regarding trying VLC and have just watched my latest export, 717MB, and that seemed to play alright without any jerkiness using VLC. One thing though, all my work in MEP and export is currently done using an external portable hard drive as am aware how much space is used by video. I could not seem to find in my VLC program though a link showing the external drive and so had to import the video onto the main computer first before playback. Odd, is that right or am I missing something?

As to arriving at the 'default setting in MEP, I just chose File>Export Movie>Video as Quicktime> and then a Preset Box appears. Just re-checked and I have not altered anything so mine comes up as - Resolution 1920 x 1080. Frame Rate 25 - Interlace is Progressive - Standard is 2D. And I just leave it at that.

However VLC seems to work if I could solve the issue of being able to access the external hard drive. Will try later to see if it sees a flash drive and then I could put finished projects onto a flash drive which I could then pass over to family.

Hi,

That does sound strange. VLC behaves like most apps when opening files. Media > Open file... then browse to your file. (KB shortcut Ctrl + O.) Or drag the file onto VLC.

Thanks again

Whist a 'normal' search down the left could not find the external hard drive, instead your tip, Terry, of Ctrl + O worked.

Thankyou.

Hi

. . . .  I notice that when viewing them on playback, in the quicktime format, there are to me noticeable jumpiness in the viewing . . . .an external portable hard drive . . .

That could be part of the problem - MOV files will stream ie the player will download /get part of the file and start playing it.  The player then depends on the rest of the video being streamed to it at least at the same speed it is playing at. If the streaming is slower than the play rate then you will get jumpiness particularly with HD video.

How fast the USB hard drive can transfer the data depends on the USB speed (probabably USB 2) and how many other USB devices are connected to the same USB hub.

. . . . I do not want to export to DVD as aware in the past after just a few playbacks there have been problems with the disc. . . . .

What is happening to the discs - are you using an economy brand, are you storing them correctly in black DVD boxes ?

Hi Johnebaker,

Playing via VLC seemed to have solved my issue. But yes, you are right, it is a USB2 connection.

As to the Discs, my experience came a couple of years back when I initially started with my MEP experience before being sidetracked into other interests. I used a variety of named brands of discs and exported a number of recordings for both myself and to give to my daughter for my grandchildren to watch. Both of us, after a few plays experienced the Discs stopping during playback. Disappointingly, I had not saved the final edit so all the work was lost. So a lesson learnt and now I am saving my edits and exporting to a format that can, fingers crossed, without problems play via a computer.
