Shuttle wheel use for MEP.

Do shuttle wheels work with MEP, or would I need Pro-X? Do they produce smoother audio playback in MEP than dragging the cursor or using the virtual scrub slider? The thing I miss most from working with analog equipment is the ability to turn off a tape machines brakes and manually spin both reels back and forth. I could, back then, edit an album track in several places backward, with few passes for each splice, and within in a few minutes produce a single. It was quicker to work backward as when you finished you only had to press play to hear the result.

I have the ShuttlePro v2, John EB has the Express. I love it and the number of buttons suits me just fine. It works with MEP, VPX, MusicMaker, Samplitude, Xara, etc. We discussed this before I bought it; see this link.

I have modified the levels and buttons since then, and I am just about to make another major change to better suit my workflow. I find that the buttons that I programmed for the mouse modes could be better used. The mouse modes are on screen, so I would be better of just clicking on them with the mouse and using the buttons for other commands. The idea is to not have to resort to the keyboard or go through menus to get an oft-used command.

I can't say that the outer jog wheel is that great. I should look at the commands in more detail as it goes from a reasonable smooth speed to all of a sudden very fast if I go turn just a bit too far. But, it does beat dragging the cursor or using the slider. The inner wheel is what I use the most to get to the exact frame for a cut.

I nearly bought a shuttle wheel some time back for Cubase but the inbuilt virtual one always worked quite well.

After reading the other thread, (thanks for the link) I'm not sure if I'd use it for much more than for scrolling so perhaps John EB's version would suit me better. It's nice to know it will work in MEP as I can't find anything in the manual about using external peripherals.
