Hi

There are several ways of doing this - what sort of highlight do you require - an arrow, circle or the screen to dim slightly apart from the highlighted player?

All three will work. I think the dim or circle would work best

Hi

For the screen dim set up your timeline as follows:

Track 1 - video - this will be the dimming video

Track 2 - a black white mask, 1 copy at each position where you want to highlight and the correct length - here I have used a circle mask and altered its size and position - if you do not have a mask I have put one here

Track 3 - same video as track 1 - it must be in sync with track 1.

Adjust the mask size and position and apply Chromakey, Alpha to it ensure the arrow indicated above points up - click it if it does not.

Select track 1 video then select the Brightness effect for each mask position add keyframes to change the Brightness of the video as follows - refer to image below for the position numbers

  1. Brightness 50
  2. Brightness 25
  3. Brightness 25
  4. Brightness 50

Repeat this for all mask positions

To animate a mask to follow the subject select View animation, Size and position and apply keyframes to move the mask to follow the subject.

Here is a quick example using this method

Got it.. one last question. Can I pause the video while the arrow is on the screen for a sec or 2

johnebaker wrote on 5/2/2017, 2:31 AM

Hi

. . . . Can I pause the video while the arrow is on the screen for a sec or 2Can I pause the video while the arrow is on the screen for a sec or 2 . . . .

The easiest way is to insert a still image at the point you want to pause and adjust its length for the time you require -

  1. Position the timeline cursor at the point you want to pause the video

  2. Right click the video and selects Insert still image at the playback marker

  3. Right click the still image and select Change photo length and enter the new length in the dialog that opens

  4. Close up any gap between the image and video

Note: if you are using the dim method and have already applied it, then you will have to adjust the mask, keyframes, etc as well

Well I am making progress. I figured out the arrow, but I am trying out the mask and I am have an issue. When I put the mask in line 2, and set chroma and size and position, including arrow up, it is just showing a dotted square on the screen and not the mask??

johnebaker wrote on 5/2/2017, 2:48 PM

Hi

Do you mean dotted lines

  1. with orange 'handles' like this

the mask is still selected click in a blank area of the timeline to deselect it

  2. a very faint dotted line in the shape of the mask - in the case of the image above it would be oval.

Move the timeline cursor through the video from just before to just after the mask - the dotted lines should disappear.

If the dotted lines remain, save the project close MEP and then restart MEP and reload the project.

I have had no 2 happen on occasion - it looks like the screen refresh has only partially completed.
