Some collages not working?

terrypin wrote on 9/20/2014, 4:43 AM

I'm trying a few of the single object collages to add a little variety to my videos. But I've already found several where the preview and the actual result differ significantly. Here's an example:

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP-CollagePuzzle-01.jpg

Anyone able to reproduce please?

Hi Terry,

You are quite right, some of them do not do what they are supposed to do. I get the same result as you for the collage in your example. I tried the first 5 and it seems that this is the only 1 of 5 to have an error. If you go through all of them (a major undertaking), perhaps you could list the ones with problems and post it, or we can share the task. I can quickly put together a spreadsheet with the list of all of the effects, jpeg name and name from ini file and we can add in a description, favourites, and comments (like Error on main image, does not zoom in and out).

Of course, we can always modify the result of a bad one, but still, the effect should do what is advertised.

Thanks John. Maybe later I'll tackle that BIG exercise!

Meanwhile, here's another specific:

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP-CollagePuzzle-02.jpg

The (roughly portrait) image had the collage applied successfully. But after removing it with Reset video effects (F6 in my case) it got rotated through 90 degrees clockwise.

I'm currently housekeeping a bunch of other collage stuff and will post each issue separately.

Terry,

Spreadsheet here. You can download it and work on it.

The sort button at the top puts everything in the order that the icons appear on the screen. The Categories are those shown in the ini file. The icons are grouped on the MEP screen by the Category, then 1, 2, 3 bilder, etc., and this is what I tried to replicate. There is a duplicate number 10 - one for 4:3 and the other for 16:9. They are out of sequence in the spreadsheet.

Under favourites, you can indicate ***'s if you wish to identify those that you like and don't like.

I have made this spreadsheet available for all. The next version may not be, as it will contain comments and favourites. Or, we can just issue another one that has comments only on the ones that have problems; after which we all keep our own comments and favourites.

Enjoy!

Terry,

For #15, lenses7, I get the same as you. Reset or Ctlr+Alt+- rotate the image. Add your comment to the list.

For anyone who didn't notice, the name of the effect is shows up at the very bottom of the screen when you select or highlight (click once on) the effect.

Looking at your image AFAICS you do not have an image on row 6 of your timeline - I also have the same images on rows 7-9 as shown below

Personally I rarely use the collages - I prefer to roll my own.

Terry,

Spreadsheet here. You can download it and work on it.

Wow, you've been busy!

It's nearly 11 pm here but I'll take a close look at your comprehensive worksheet tomorrow or Monday.

I'd be interested to know how many collages you have in total, measured in several ways:

1. Under the Collages tab in MEP? Mine has 152, which includes quite a few I made myself and many copied across from all previous versions.

2. CTF files in \Collages? Should be same as #1.

3. Translation.ini entries? 155 here, because of those missing ones I asked about in my post MEP 2014: Three collage files missing.

I have 112 minus the 3 that are missing makes 109. Note that there are 5 more at the bottom that were not in the ini file, but for which I have jpg files, sometimes ini files, but nothing more.

For the spreadsheet, I copied in all of the jpg files that were in the folder:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus\VideoEffects\Collage\Icons_video

I have a program that grabs the filenames and puts them in a text file, just select them all, copy and paste using Windows Explorer.

I had jpg files for everything that was in the ini file.

I went quickly through my previous programs and didn't notice off-hand any that I didn't have on my list. So, where did you get the other ones?

For the spreadsheet, I copied in all of the jpg files that were in the folder:

Which should match the icons displayed, assuming translation.ini is correct.

Grabs from within MEP? I use a macro for that but am interested to know of an independent program that can do it. Or do you grab from an Explorer folder? I've recently started using Directory Lister for that.

I had jpg files for everything that was in the ini file.

I went quickly through my previous programs and didn't notice off-hand any that I didn't have on my list.

Sounds like you imported from previous versions as I did?

So, where did you get the other ones?

40 I made myself, including a couple from Carl and Michael (mrverron) years ago from whom I learned how to hack this. Those 40 are currently in the last four rows:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP2014-MyOwnCollages.jpg

As you see, some are dummies used for layout purposes and a few merely differ in duration. Of the remainder I reckon about half have actually proved useful, although I probably use only a dozen on a regular basis. I may pull together a short video to illustrate those if I get time. (My current prjoject is suffering since I became preoccupied with this Effects stuff!)

I also thought some of my 152 were from previous versions but given that 152-40-109=3, that must be a very small contribution. Unless you've been importing too?

P.S: Did you get the two WMVs I uploaded?

Hi Terry,

I got the 2 collages, I could run them, but for some reason I couldn't download them. Thank you.

I have an old program called Filegrabber. I copy files from Windows Explorer and paste into Filegrabber, and then copy and paste from Filegrabber as text, into something else like a text editor or Excel, or just save as a txt file. The parameters can be changed to import just filenames or with the various other attributes, like size, date, etc. It is very convenient for copying just filenames for lists, like the spreadsheet of collage filenames. Being an old shareware program, there is no install required, just run the executable.

I don't think that I imported anything from previous versions but I may have. MEP2014 and VPX6 seem to match and I don't remember importing these into VPX6.

I would be interested in seeing how to make ctf files or some way to grab the overall effect. Of my own collages. I can save an effect and keyframes, but only one at a time.

Projects: it has been my experience that 10% of the work takes 90% of the time.

That's odd. Some issue with the way magix.info handles Dropbox links?

Anyway, the only purpose was to show you the effect. But out of curiosity see if these work any better:

Terry,

That worked! Each came up in IE with a Download button at the top. The previous automatically ran Windows Media Player.

I can't say that I like either of them. The first one would be better if it didn't flip so fast. Magix people probably didn't like them either and removed the ctf files but forgot the others.

Thanks.

Agreed. In fact I don't like most of the built in effects, including collages.

I didn't check that earliier screenshot of my collages very thoroughly. It was using translation_en.ini instead of my updated translation.ini. If both exist in the\Collages folder, MEP apparently uses the 'en' version.

Here's the latest version, shown as a composite. This displays them in 'Number of objects' logical order, which is more useful, even though it means 'mine' are interspersed.
