Sound forge pro 18_plugin chain issue

grig wrote on 9/16/2025, 2:46 AM

Hi,
when using the plugin chainer, the settings of each effect in the chain are reset to default if I close the plugin window. When I open it again to modify or fintune it, the settings are reset to default, not those I entered before closing it. Even if I use a preset.
On windows 11.
Any help is welcome.

Hi @grig, which chainer mode are you referring to: the (non-destructive) timeline chainer or the destructive 'Apply Plug-in Chain' in the "Fx Plug-ins" Menu
On my Win 10 PC it returns to the last used chain preset, The individual plug-ins may show 'untitled' though if I recall correctly and if I understand your dilemma. I do not have a Win 11 PC to test it on.

Hi @rraud, thank you for your answer.
yes, I'm talking about the non destructive plugin chain.
For exemple, if I use in my chain a graphic eq with the sliders at various positions, as long as the effect window stays opened, no problem, the effect is audible.
If I close the effect windows, the same, I can hear the effect, but if I call back the effect window to change or just check my settings, it's reset to default, and the sound of course doesn't keep my initial setting.
Really weird. I'm using Sound forge since the early Sonic Foundry days, and use the plugin chainer since it appeared, but never had this issue.

Does this occur after saving the (Apply Fx Plug-in) FX Chain preset? On my system, after closing the chain window and reopening, the last used chain preset is loaded with all the last saved settings.

OTOH, the timeline chainer stays active even when the chainer window is closed but will not rewrite the file until the file is saved, or Save as. If the file is a work in progress to continue later, it can be saved as a Sound Forge project file (.frg) .

FWIW, I usually use SFP-15.. 64 bit SF-16 and 17 had a display issue with 32 bit VST-2 plug-ins and the legacy full scale dB peak meter was removed along and the double-click issue occurred. In SFP-18, the VST-2 issue was mostly resolved and the peak meter was brought back,. but it is inferior IMO. The double-click issue was never resolved and still requires ultra-fast clicking to select a region.

I didn't had this issue with previous versions of SF. Only with SF 18.
And this occurs on all PCs, since I'm teaching sound design, and all my students have the same problem on their machines.
Another issue, is that the meters (true peak meter, ...) have a certain latency, when you hit play, it start playing yer file, but it takes nearly one second to start showing values.
