Stopping an unwanted 'Creating proxy'?

terrypin wrote on 5/16/2014, 3:12 AM

Forgetting that I had the automatic proxy enabled I dragged a large MP4 onto my MEP 2014 timeline, as I wanted to extract a tiny section of it. (An example of my bus animation to show John Baker, for my parallel post.)

I quickly pressed Esc to stop the proxy, which was estimated to take 10 minutes. But it failed. Repeated keying failed too, so I had to forcibly close from the XP Task Mgr.

Is that known behaviour? Unlike an export, can a proxy creation not be stopped?

--------------------

Can anyone recommend a free utility that will let me quickly cut an MP4 without quality loss? MEP seems rather OTT for that task. My ageing version of VideoRedo Plus does the job neatly for MPG, but I use MP4 almost exclusively nowadays.

Not sure if you tried this free program. MpegStreamclip works with MP4 files and can create in & out points.

Hi jazzspot,

Thanks. Downloaded and installed it.

Set In and Out to identify my 10 sec extract, but when I attempt to export it I get "Error: The movie is too long". I tried saving as MP4 and AVI, same result in both cases.

Although I see  many posts about this, so far I've found no solution.

Pity, because it looks a handy tool.

Ever see that error yourself, or any ideas on its cause please?

Hi John,

Thanks, but... "Forgetting that I had the automatic proxy enabled..."

What I'm asking is whether you can cancel an unwanted proxy creation with Esc.

Yes you can - you get this message pop-up and you have to be very quick if the video clips are short.

Thanks John, that's what I thought. Looks like it was broken then, as I had no pop-up, and it was a large file.. Will try a few more later.

Did you keep mashing the Esc key - if so then you would have canceled the message and not seen it - you must press the Esc only once. It does take a few seconds to respond.

OK, thanks John, I'll try that during my next session. (I did indeed repeatedly tap Esc after it failed to work first time.)

Once again I was unable to cancel a Creating proxy operation. Had to use TM to force closure of MEP 2014 to get access again, as I didn't fancy waiting around 20 minutes!

This time I was careful to click Esc only once. However, it was maybe 10 seconds or so after starting the import (of a very large MP4) that I did so. (When I realised that I still had the auto proxy oprion enabled.)

So it appears that after a certain time Esc no longer works.

Anyone care to try replicating please, before I report it as a bug.

Hi Terry

I tested this with a 15 minute video clip 1920 * 1080 25fps. Esc works every time up to 4 min 30 secs - this being the time needed to convert and export the proxy file (conversion rate on my PC is ~ 83 fps), once past this point then Esc does not work - the conversion being complete and loading of the proxy file on the timeline begins.

HTH

Hi John,

Many thanks for testing. Looks like it's something unique to me then. I'll just have to make sure I switch off the auto proxy option in those relatively few cases when I don't want one.

Oddly enough I have sometimes renamed mp4 to mpg and tricked some software into loading the file... Can't hurt to try.

Thanks, neat idea. Tried a couple of MP4s at random and both played OK in MPCHC - but my ancient version of VideoRedo wasn't so tolerant, giving me the message "Editing of elementary streams is not yet supported."
