Strange error message with Photo Manager Deluxe

Linda-Lawson wrote on 12/15/2025, 5:27 AM

PHOTO MANAGER DELUXE v13.1.1.12
(WINDOWS 11 25H2)

When opening an image file (usually a JPG), I often receive the following error message:

"Drive or folder not ready, not available or protected."

When I close the message the file is opened correctly but can anyone explain what's going on here and if there's a fix?

Many thanks

Hi

. . . . WINDOWS 11 25H2 . . . .

Are you logging into the computer with a Microsoft account?

If so, it is likely that your Documents folder and 2 others are synced to, and using, OneDrive as 'backup' storage, and this may be causing a delay before the image is opened and PM times out, putting up the error message.

If you do not need OneDrive, then I would suggest you disconnect OneDrive as a minimum. I have also uninstalled OneDrive to prevent it syncing.

See this Microsoft article on the options you have.

Hi John

Many thanks for the response. Yes, I do use OneDrive but I have it set that all files in the images folders are also stored locally so it shouldn't really be grabbing them from the cloud. I've opened photos outside of OneDrive and they mostly don't instigate the message which is good but one or two did. Plus it's not like it's taking more than a couple of seconds to open a file so I would hope that wouldn't be enough to 'trip' the message....hey ho!

I'm considering dumping OneDrive but as I get 1TB+ of 'free' storage with Microsoft 365 it's kind of handy. :)

Understood, BUT if that "free storage" is actually creating problems for the user one has to ask, is it really worth it??

I also have M$365 but will have nothing whatever to do with OneDrive. As a result, I don't receive any of the annoying error messages, like the one you see, which can seriously interrupt workflow, especially for audio and video editing programs! (Just my opinion!)

Unfortunately that is not enough.

When editing, the program creates support files, in the folder where the imported items are and in other folders within the Magix folder located in Documents, depending on what you are importing, ie video, images and audio, and exporting to video, these will be synced unless the Magix folder, or any other folders outside of the Magix folder are also set not to sync to OneDrive.

If the 'kind of handy' refers to you having backups, external hard drives are a good, relatively inexpensive, alternative and, IMHO a very important feature - you are in control and still have them avaialble when the Internet connection goes down.

I use these regularly with a program called SyncBack, there is a free version, for scheduled backups.
