Hi Ed, and welcome to the user to user forums.

I'm not sure what you mean. For uploading to a website all of my video exports would be set to progressive.

All my video cameras take progressive video files although I'm aware some older video cameras use interlaced outputs. You can not exceed the quality of the original and often that means the export has to sometimes be a larger file size than the original to maintain quality as on average most exports from video editing packages means the video is compressed again when it is re-encoded after editing and possible effects are applied as well.

If it is for clients then there may be compromises to be made but if it is for your own website and you are trying to save space then personally I would upload to a video sharing service like YouTube at the highest quality possible and make the video only viewable via a private link. You could then make the video show on your webpage and use minimal resources. The same as posting a video here.

Ray.

Hi

The main issue with streaming a video from the Internet is not whether the video is progressive or interlaced.

In simple terms, for streaming the video has to be set for 'Fast Start', ie the video will start playing once enough has been downloaded to the browser. Without the 'fast start' setting, the whole video would have to be downloaded before play can start.

The Streaming option sets the video file header parameters for 'Fast Start'.

If you are uploading your video to Youtube, Vimeo etc, they will convert your upload to a range of resolutions and bitrates to suit the viewers Internet connection speed.

In this case the settings you export to, becomes a case of matching the output to your source video resolution/quality any resolution/bitrate lower than the source video will result in some loss of quality on recompression during export.
