Hello all. Footage (both live action and animation) is playing choppily early on within the film I am putting together. This has just started tonight and I cannot see a cause. The problem stops after some minutes and playback returns to normal. I wasn't even editing the footage involved. Any advice gratefully received.

Hi

Is this the dying laptop or a replacement?

If a replacement what make/model is it?

Since your previous post I got a Lenovo Legion 5i 17" laptop with Intel integrated graphics processor and RTX 2060 and it works smoothly, once setup correctly, with 4K video, and no proxy files, using an external hard drive and a Headless Ghost monitor emulator plugged in - to activate the Intel integrated GPU.

It's the dying laptop. By clearing the hard drive of everything bar the essentials, I seem to have reduced the incidence of screen disasters . As I write, it's more of a ghosting effect.

This new problem won't go away.

Hi

. . . . It's the dying laptop . . . .

Does the Yoga have Lenovo Vantage installed?

If so run it and turn on Hybrid mode

Note when you click the Hybrid mode button it may change to green - ensure you click it once, close Vantage and then open it again the button should then show green as above.

This will enable the both GPUs to be used and may improve the performance issues you are having.

Hi John. Yes, my laptop has Lenovo Vantage, but it looks different to yours and I cannot find any options for hybrid mode.

Hi

. . . .  I cannot find any options for hybrid mode. . . .

The missing option would suggest the Yoga does not support Hybrid mode, nor can I find information on whether the model you have does or does not support it.

I have just clicked on Properties for two of the malfunctioning clips within VPX - it shows their resolution as 3840 x 2160, which puzzles me as the project is Full HD and each imported clip has been downscaled from UHD to FHD. Is it even possible for a clip which has sat there for months could suddenly change resolution?!?

Hi

. . . . resolution as 3840 x 2160, . . . . project is Full HD . . . imported clip . . . downscaled from UHD to FHD. Is it even possible for a clip which has sat there for months could suddenly change resolution? . . . .

That is not possible.

The most likely causes are the wrong video clip was imported or not replaced with the downscaled version, or at some point the original video clip has been put back to where MEP is looking for it.

The project resolution and the source video clips are independent of each other - you can have a project set to any resolution and framerate you like and import video of any resolution and framerate, though doing so will pop up the message that the video and project resolutions/frame rates are different and asks if you want to adjust the project.

The general recommendations project settings to set are:

  1. to match the majority video on the timeline

    or

  2. the final output resolution and framerate

in both cases ignore any popups about the imported video being different.
