Synchronising scrolling text

Magix MEP 2019: 17.0.3.178 (UDP3)

I have downloaded a video clip of a song and want to put scrolling text (the lyrics) to accompany the length of the clip.

I can insert a scrolling text box and put the lyrics in that, and have adjusted it to the length of the song.

I want to try and synchronise the lyrics with the screen display (verses) etc. In my scrolling text box I have used the ‘return keyboard key’ to create a gap so that the text follows the verses in the song. This works to some extent but not 100% satisfactorily.

As a workaround, I downloaded the song as MP3 only; the downloaded clip and the MP3 being the same length, and put this on the timeline, firstly above the video, and secondly below the video. At the same time, I muted the sound of the video on the respective mute button on the mixer panel. The song would play, but the video didn’t.

Is there a way of achieving what I want to do in respect of the scrolling text synchronised with the downloaded song? Help and advice much appreciated.

@Aitch

Hi,

I'll start at the end. In MEP, if video and audio are not on separate tracks, then clicking on M in the track header (see the hint) or in the Mixer will turn off the track - everything. I always work with video and audio on separate tracks. You can change the setting to do this in the Program Settings. I suggest that you watch my tutorials on getting started, parts 2 and 3.

Just put your video on track 1, Ctrl+H to put the audio and video on separate tracks.

Put your title on track 4 or higher. There are various ways to do this or to get the scrolling effect or karaoke type effect.

1. Use a mask on track 3 to hide part of the title, put the title box with the first line showing just above the mask. Extend your title for the full duration. Using size/position effect, keyframe the title to move up a line when you want. Now you need to learn about masking and keyframing.

2. Same as above, but if the entire text fits on the screen, put the mask to show the first line at the top, then keyframe them mask to move downwards to expose each line. This is what I do usually in my tutorials.

3. Make separate titles for each line and arrange them on the timeline to show up at the right time.

4. If you want the text for the line at that point in the song to have coloured text and then not, you'll have to duplicate the text, one with the text with a highlight colour, the other without.

5. If you want point 4 but with the words on a line being coloured as the song progresses, then you need the two texts boxes, one with coloured text on track 3 and the other normal on track 5 and a moving mask on track 4 that exposes the coloured text over time.

...and combinations thereof. It depends on how you want this to happen.

Lots to learn.

Hi

. . . . Magix MEP 2019: 17.0.3.178 (UDP3) . . . .

Not related to your question, however with that version number you have Movie Edit Pro 2018 and are missing 2 patches - the last one being 17.0.3.184.

Related to you question I used a different method 8 years ago for a students German class, to that @browj2 has discussed, a portion is shown below - I have left enough of the audio to give you an idea of the syncing. The only animation needed is for the blue background image that was inserted on a track between the background pictures and the title object. This also gives the viewer a chance to read the lyrics more fully in order to sing along.

After a week or so of faffing around; in response to john baker, I tried to update but it kept asking me for almost £50 for doing so. I'll not bother for the moment.

In response to browj2, I'm not 100% familiar with the method, so didn't get too far with it. However, I have used a scrolling box template with inserted text. I have done this for each of the verses of the song I was wanting to use. I have been able to adjust the playing length of the scrolling text and it fits nicely. Effectively, I have achieved what I wanted to, even though it's probably not the best way. On playback it works fine, so happy with that. Thanks for all help and comments.

@Aitch

Hi,

Glad you got something working.

BTW, I gave you 5 different methods to do this, not one.

Hi

That must be the upgrade price to the current version MEP 2021 (v20.x.x.xx) - patches were/are free.

Thanks for the info. I tried to 'Update' through the 'Help' Menu. It keeps presenting me with the £50 option, so can't get anything regarding the other patches. At the moment every time I open MEP, I get the same screen, even if I click on 'do not show this message again' dialog box. Am a bit annoyed at what seems to be a continual bombardment, which I can't get rid of.

Hi

Look for Magix Cloud, Update Notifier (not  Updater), Connect, Magix Connect or (Magix) Network Sync in Windows Settings, Apps and uninstall it.

Also in the program settings check the Hide news option.

Thanks, John EB. I tried the programme settings and Hide News. No joy with that. Still persists.

I feel relatively confident with many aspects of computer, but I do not like cloud based options, so I haven't tried the Magix Cloud suggestion.

@Aitch

I'm sure @johnebaker will return to this thread but, just to clarify, those various items that John suggested you look for are all different things! IOW, they are not all "part" of Magix Cloud but rather totally different "programs", any one or more of which you may find installed on your computer and so can uninstall.
