Time-lapse EOS R

tmcmenam wrote on 4/22/2019, 10:42 AM

Hello all, first time post. Sorry If I have unintentionally broken some rules, I tried my best to follow the guidelines for asking a question.

MEP version: 18.0.2.235 (UDP3)

Intel I7 -4790K, 16GB RAM, Nvidia 1080 Graphics Card

Windows 10

I'm using a Canon EOS R in timelapse mode, the camera does a nice job of putting the timelapse together for you and giving you a single .MP4 with an .MOV and no audio.

I cannot get this file to import into Magix correctly. I get an error that tells me quicktime must be installed. I went ahead and tried installing "quicktime alternative" which now allows me to import the file, but it shows up with no video. From what I read I should be able to import this type of file since I am using Pro Premium.

I am able to import the file if i use handbrake to convert it into an MKV, but I would very much like to not have to go through this additional step.

Can anyone offer some advice as to what I may be doing incorrectly?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

MOV files do, indeed, require that Quicktime be installed; I wonder whether your "quicktime alternative" is really not suitable for what you need? This page is the one where you can download and install the latest version of the "official" Quicktime. (I have it installed on my machine and can import, edit and use MOV. files from my Canon camera without problem.)

If you do decide to test the "genuine" version I would strongly suggest you completely uninstall the alternative before installing the "real" one.

If you still have no luck, can you post to any file-downloading/sharing site a short (c. 10 seconds) extract of your MOV. file for other users to test on their machines? Please don't either attach it to the forum since the forum software is likely to alter it, nor upload it to YouTube or Vimeo or similar since they, too, are highly likely to do the same.

Hey here is a link to the ~30 second video. Its rather large since shot in 4k =(. I don't have a way to chop it up since i can't get it into MEP.

I uninstalled my "quicktime alternative" and installed quicktime for windows with the same result. I can import the file but it shows up with no video.

Thanks,

Tom

Welcome to the forum 🙂

I had a quick look at the specs on the EOS-R and if you are recording at the highest quality for 4k, that appears to be 480mbs which is possibly too high for your system to handle, which could be why you are seeing no video images. Can you view the video using other software on the same system and have you tried recording at a lower bit rate setting?

Roger,

Thanks for the reply, I have no problem viewing the original video using VLC media player, and no problem converting it using handbrake.

Yes the bitrate of the video is 465 mpbs.

@tmcmenam

Hi

MediaInfo analaysis of the file you uploaded indicates that the video codec format is AVC1 which is a sub type of the AVC codec which imports into MEP with no issues.

I will not install QT, however, I have tried several conversions, including with lower bitrates, to h.264 and mpeg-2 of the source file you uploaded and only the mpeg-2 will import, the h.264 still asks for QT, however the video is black.

There is a workaround, assuming the original jpegs the camera created the movie from are available, avoiding the use of QT,:

In MEP, open the Program settings, Video/audio tab and set the Standard image length to 1 frame and OK

Import all the jpeg images on to the timeline, export as Magix MXV video (or any video format you choose) and use this in your project(s).

I have done this with just 4+ hrs of timelapse consisting of over 3100 images.

@tmcmenam

I will just add that, as I said before, I do have QT installed, but attempting to add your file to the timeline in either MEP or VPX produces exactly the same error message, so I rather think that message may well be a "false negative" (if such a thing exists!)

Just one other thought: in the user forum for a photo editing software which I use there are a number of posts regarding the RAW file format produced by this recent generation of Canon cameras and the problem of opening such files in order to edit them. I wonder whether there is something similar in the format of the timelapse video files this camera can produce that makes those files "unusual", and hence incompatible with MEP/VPX?
