Tips for moving from Vegas 15 to MS 2022

Heya!

Just moved from Vegas 15 to MS Suite 2022

yes, i have read the help file, yes i have used search.

so here are some things i want to do, and cannot find simple answers in the help files or whatever.

1: Under Vegas 15, old and primitive though it was, in the timeline, whatever you had selected, whether it was a clip, or a marker, when you dragged it, it would snap to everything. Other clips, markers, end of project etc.

MS22 doesn't. It'll snap a clip, but i want to do things like snap the start of a range to a snap marker i placed. Nope.

And i can't find a setting to change to fix it. also the little orange playback marker could also be snapped, and MS22 seems not to do that either.

So what i want to do is find a setting or button to push that lets me snap range markers and playback markers to clips and SNAP markers. you'd really think SNAP markers would be a dead cert.

2: V15 had a 'smart process' option where it would NOT reprocess a clip if the export was native resolution to the source. So if you did real basic editing like chopped off half of a 100Mb file, it would not reprocess the clip, NOT lowering the vid quality, and a half length 100Mb clip would be 50Mb. IT would not reprocess the whole thing up to 250Mb, despite being half the length.

And i can't find a setting for that, either.

Yes, i found the setting that adjusts the current project to the resolution of the first pasted vid clip, that's good. But even when you do that, and set the output to the same [which is how Vegs did it] the vids get reprocessed, and come out massive.

In short: 1: How to make the 'play' marker and render bounds snap to 'snap markers'

2: how to clip movies without reprocessing.

Thanks.

@Azirahael

Hi

. . . . How to make the 'play' marker and render bounds snap to 'snap markers' . . .

Snap markers have a specific use, ie snap to transients in an audio track or file, in MMS 2022, there are different marker types for different purposes as is detailed in the manual.

. . . . how to clip movies without reprocessing . . . .

In preview this is not possible, however exporting does have the option to Smart copy video clips as shown below

However there are restrictions which apply, the main one being the video format must be AVCHD (h.264) encoded plus:

  • the export video encoding parameters must match the source video or vice versa if you require a specific export format, and always takes place on the GOP borders - it is not frame-precise.

  • no effects are used eg sharpening, colour correction, collages, picture in picture etc to

  • Titles will force rendering of video clips they are positioned over.

However Smart copy still may not occur, especially if any video is from a mobile phone or other devices which have a custom recording formats eg GoPro's.
