I'm trying to find an easy way of putting a background behind text/title, for example, subtitles, to make them easier to read. All I've worked out so far is:
1. Add a border (but that really only follows the letter edges);
2. Place a black image under the text. That's a bit fiddly to adjust to get it looking good if I decide to change the font size or re-locate it.
I see in Xara Web Designer there is a feature called Paragraph Background. That is the sort of effect I am after.
Any suggestions?

I do lots of different things depending on the background. From adding shadow and highlights to doing as you are suggesting. Even a simple background can be made using Microsoft Paint or Paint 3D. Make the background either white or black or blue or green and then add a coloured shape. Make the image the same size as the video resolution or higher. Save in whatever format MEP can use. I tend to use either PNG or J-PEG. You can then set the Chroma Key to get rid of the background. Black or white backgrounds tend to work best.
Adjusting the size and placement can be done with the size / position tool.
There are lots of ways to do this and animate them if needed. I'm sure one of the two Johns have a few tutorials on this subject. The last image is video using the centre image but making the object less intrusive to see the background underneath. The wording is on another track.

That is what I do, however to make it easier once the first tile and background is done ie positioned correctly font size correct the background the correct transparency etc I use 2 different methods for subsequent titles
I select both objects and then either:
Rinse and repeat as necessary.

how do I move the background to some text around the screen?
Hi Chris.
Use the Size / Position tool on the object you want move. Place your time marker at the beginning of the clip and adjust the zoom level and drag the image in the monitor to the desired position. Under the effect tool Size / Position you should see the Key Frame Editor. Add a place marker with the + symbol. Then drag the timeline marker to the next position you want to place a marker and alter the position or zoom size to and adjust again, placing another marker. Repeat as needed.
