Transistion length setting issue in storyboard

jeffjn wrote on 3/18/2014, 3:30 AM

There seems to be a minor issue setting the transition length in MEP 2014.

Place two short clips on the storyboard - the second one less than 20 seconds in duration.

Click on the cut icon between them and select Crossfade.

Now click again and select set transition length, then set a duration great than the duration of the second clip.

The transition is set to the maximum possible - a frame less then the duration of clip 2. All good so far.

Now try to adjust the duration again - the menu option is greyed out!

In MEP 2013 it's possible to still adjust the transition duration.

Hi Jeff,

I reproduced that.

I guess the reason you explicitly mentioned the storyboard is that you normally work in that view? The bug exists in the timeline too.

Thanks Terry - actually, I just happened to be experimenting with the Storyboard - I don't normally use it. The fact that' you also discovered in in Timeline mode makes it more serious!

I'll report this now - thanks again.

jeffjn,

I get identical behavior in MEP 2013 and 2014. The 'Set transition length' seems available only if there is some, even just a single frame, of the second clip to follow the overlap transition section. In timeline mode, if you try and slide the second clip further to the left (the equivalent of resetting the transition length) MEP will auto clip the 'first' clip so there isn't anything sticking out on the right.

It makes since as transitions work in one time direction -- the only way to somehow transition back to the fist clip is to cut off a piece and place it to the right of the second one:

Two questions:

  • Why work in storyboard mode when timeline mode offers so much more control?
  • Exactly what effect are you trying to create with what seems to be an effort to make a transition longer  than its parts?

Regards,

Carl

ADDED: I see my first question got answered as I typed! Might my not seeing any difference between 2013 and 2014 just be my working at single frame zoom to exactly match lengths?

And, maybe there have to be at least two frames sticking out beyond the overlap...?

I'm seeing different behaviour in MEP 2013 and 2014 with regard to the storyboard.

Just because a feature is little used doesn't mean it is OK for it to be bugged. And the storyboard is a useful tool for rearranging clips or photos.

If you accidentlly set a group of transitions to a duration that isn't suitable for all the clips, you can't access the transition length tool to fix the problem.

So I really don't see the relevance of your questions. "Doctor, it hurts when I do this". "Don't do it then."  :-)
