Two Questions About MEP re: Product Activation and a File Issue

jerancampy22 wrote on 3/13/2021, 2:25 PM

Thanks for taking the time to read my two questions.

1. I am preparing to install a new version of windows, wipe my hard drive and move to a SSD. I use Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021 daily and am on version 20.0.1.80 as I have recently updated. I am a bit worried about this entire process. As of right now, I know where Magix has most of its files. Numerous folders under "My Documents" such as Magix Downloads, Projects, Speed, Music Editor, Custom Effects etc. I also see folders for New Blue, New Blue FX, Sound Forge etc. And I know under program files, that I can find the Program and its folders there. My question is, what is the best practice for moving to a new operating system?

  • Do I uninstall Magix?
  • Do I move these files to an external hard drive and then back over to the new Hard drive after OS install?
  • What will be the possible issues when I try to download MEP again? Will I be told I already have it licensed on another pc?
  • How can avoid the possible issues that will come with this change?

2. My second question is concerning something that has bothered me for a while and I would love a fix or some sort of work around. I like to keep my folders clean and my desktop clean. I cannot stand how Magix creates constant .HDP files and .HO They quickly become an eye sore and over time I am not even sure they are necessary. For example, if I delete these files and go back to the videos that I created with them, they are still okay. It is almost as if the files aren't needed. How do you handle these? I do lots of small clips so very quickly my desktop or various folders are filled with these files. Is there a way to have them auto-delete or a way to hide them for view? Really I am wondering why this is even necessary. I can think of no other program that when I use it, it creates files and throws them on my desktop or in folders to where they soon take over.

Is there a way to handle these files better?

Thanks

Hi,

Good first question and I'll be doing the same soon, so I'll start working up a list.

Second question. No, do not delete the temporary files until your project has been completed. If you delete them and then open the project, they will be recreated, slowing down loading time. The H0 file is the wave form that is displayed on the timeline.

Thanks John. I appreciate that. Okay, so the temp files are no longer needed when the project has completed. Thanks, I will delete as I finish projects. And I would appreciate very much a list like you describe to help me move over to Windows 10. I have had many versions of Magix and folders everywhere so nervous about it.

When I did this I first de-registered my copy of MEP at magix and then just reloaded the program from my user account. If you had some previous versions of plugins from previous versions of MEP they may be missing. You also have to de-register and re-register all third party plugins at the appropriate sites. Make sure you have all the email addresses you used and passwords available to log into the user accounts. I kept printed copies of all mine in a notebook.

HO and HDP files are really small and take up next to no drive space unlike the BAK files.

If you have to reinstall additional drives make sure they get the same drive letters assigned again. I'm not sure if that step is necessary but may avoid lost directory entries. I also now have a duplicate C: drive in case of a C: drive failure.

The .HDP files are necessary as they are a reference to the original audio track that allows the audio to be edited without destructively altering the original.

One gotcha that appears to be emerging with wiping your OS is that if you edit with .mts or .m2ts files ie AVCHD / Bluray which use the Dolby Digital AC3 codec, you will be unable to export with AC3 / 5.1 sound because the expansion package which you may have downloaded in earlier versions is no longer available from Magix, in MEP2021 or via W10. You may even find like some DD AC3 Stereo will not be available after a reinstall.

I am not sure if you could perhaps work around this by copying a disc image of W8.1 and then using an upgrade path to W10 (if that upgrade path is even still available!) - others might know?
