Updating to a newer paid for version.

If you pay for an update to a newer version of MEP do you get to keep the older additional plugins from the older versions?

To do that, do you have to have both versions of the program on the same machine or are old plugins added to the new version?

IE, do you have to download to a separate predesignated folder to keep both?

Do you lose the older version when you download the new?

Are additional Magix Shop bought extras imported to the new version and do you have to re-register everything?

Will older projects still be able to be imported to the new version and work? I am aware that if the answer is yes then the project is probably no longer compatible with the old version.

Does anyone bother to run more than one version of MEP?

If so, why?

If you pay for an update to a newer version of MEP do you get to keep the older additional plugins from the older versions?

Yes, as a general rule.

To do that, do you have to have both versions of the program on the same machine or are old plugins added to the new version?

The plug ins will appear in the new version, assuming they're compatible.

IE, do you have to download to a separate predesignated folder to keep both?

No.

Do you lose the older version when you download the new?

All the most recent versions of MEP/VPX do seem to overwrite the version they are replacing; in my experience, some folders/files are left behind but most are removed/overwritten.

Are additional Magix Shop bought extras imported to the new version and do you have to re-register everything?

Since these purchases are now linked to your account you should not need to register them again but you may well need to redownload them for the new version.

Will older projects still be able to be imported to the new version and work? I am aware that if the answer is yes then the project is probably no longer compatible with the old version.

Yes, but, as you say, re-opening a project in an older version that has already been opened and saved in a later version is not guaranteed to work; there is a good chance at least something added in the new version will not be recognised by the old one.

Does anyone bother to run more than one version of MEP?

If so, why?

No, depending what you mean by "versions". As already stated, newer versions now overwrite their immediate predecessor but version prior to this Magix policy of "overwrite" can still co-exist on the same machine, useful if another user has a question about an older version.

If you're asking about different "variants" of the program, Basic, Plus or premium, my understanding is that you cannot have different variants of the same core program simultaneously installed.

Thank you for such a comprehensive answer. I thought it may work that way but I wasn't sure. Sometimes an older version of a program can have benefits over a new one, like using maybe plugins that won't work on a newer version, so I was curious. I would hate for instance to lose Pro Dad image stabilizer.

All the NB and HF (NewBlue & HitFilm) add-on gave their own serial number, as do the VdG and ProDad add-ons. So you should be a le to install them independent of which program, version or bundle you use them from.

You can also use add-ons bundled with other Magix products (Photo/music/web) with MEP/VPX.

Often the price for a products upgrade is marginal less then New products, but then bundled with various add-ons.

Hi

Not necessarily, some plugins are only licensed to a particular version and Mercalli V4 is a case in point unless you purchased the program separately from Prodad - also, there is fine print on the Magix sales page that warns that the packaged version that comes with VPX only functions for 2 years.

Thanks for all your answers. I will look up the fine print. I did look at a part of it. I must say there are a few unusual conditions in there compared to other products. It's more akin to limited licencing. Also the bit about whether something is commercial not. Which parts of the program are allowable and which bits aren't? It would seem very basic editing is yes and using any effects isn't. What is commercial? Do registered charities come under commercial usage? Is there a difference between profit and non profit organisations? If I did a report on a festival or event, is that considered reportage or advertising? I do a lot of work on behalf of charities as a volunteer.

Also what is their meaning of altering the program? If for instance I decided to take one element from one plugin and mix it with another part of another element effectively creating my own take on an effect using varying parts as templates, is that breaching the terms and conditions? It's all getting a bit complicated from a user angle.

Hi Peter, I know you and I have "discussed" this before but, on my computer, running the latest versions of MEP and VPX, Mercalli v4 is still available and useable and I definitely haven't purchased it separately!

Just to be sure, I've just opened a random piece of video footage, selected Mercalli 4 and it's currently "analyzing" the footage.

I'll update this post later should anything "strange" occur once it's finished.

Greetings,

As has been said, not all plugins work with newer versions. I used to use "Red Giant" plugins that were shipped with MEP2015, but they don't function in MEP2017/2018/2019.

I think the specific case of the Red Giant plugs is because they are 32 bit and all but the most basic of the recent versions of MEP have been 64 bit for several years.

although the box does also say 64-Bit support the word support being in v small letters.

Hi Andy,

Which Red Giant plugins are you referring to?

I have:

Red Giant Universe including:

  • Chromatic Glow
  • Knoll Light Factory EZ
  • Retrograde

and Red Giant Magic Bullet Quick Looks which shows up under Extra Effects.

For me, they all work with the latest versions of both MEP and VPX. I did nothing special at all; they just showed up and worked. Of course, I did have to install MEP2015 and the RG Universe effects. On my laptop, I removed MEP2015 and it left the RG effects, fortunately. This doesn't happen with all plugins as, in some cases, I had to leave the associated MEP program on the computer.

Thanks John,

I also removed MEP2015 after I'd loaded 2017; the Red Giants are still installed and they show up in MEP2019.

I reloaded MEP2015 not long ago to finish a project but never actually tried the RG's at the time.

I think I'll reload MEP2015 again and see if they a) work for me in 2019 and b) see if they remain after uninstalling 2015.

Maybe the act of using them in 2019 adds something to the registry or somewhere. I'll soon find out.

OK,

I loaded in 2015 - Didn't try TGs in 2019. I uninstalled 2015 and rebooted. RGs did not works in 2019 (as per my initial install and indeed my reinstall a few weeks ago).

I loaded in 2015 again - tried them in 2019 and they work in 2019. I uninstalled 2015 and rebooted. RGs still work in 2019.

Happy bunny me. Just coincidence or a lesson to be learnt?
