Upgrade / Update?

mojoaudioguru wrote on 10/11/2021, 7:04 PM

So, I just uploaded a 41 mb update for MEP 2022+, but unlike past versions, there was no explanation as to what was updated, fixed, or changed, etcetera. Does anyone know what this update was for? Also, does anyone know why they removed the "Movement" feature in the drop down menu? (Which allowed you to scan left / right / up / down - a feature that I used fluently) Or, why I can no longer shrink the video in order to have say, 4 cameras on the same screen? I was attempting to synchronize my 4 new Panasonic video cameras. (Set them all the same color, white balance, yadda, yadda) But I couldn't do it because even though the feature is still listed in the drop down menu, it doesn't work. Nothing happens when I click it. No perforated lines appear around the clip, in order to shrink the picture. What has Magix done, and why???

Fixed: wrong aspect ratio in some transitions
Fixed: Title editor crash when using undo/redo function
Fixed: Export crash when exporting videos without effects
Fixed: Horizon straightening now works correctly for videos with non-square pixels
    Fixed: Crash when deleting objects
    Fixed: Templates now load correctly
Fixed: Missing sound when playing MXF files
Fixed: Missing display in parametric equalizer
    Fixed: "qt5guimx64qt5.15.1.dll" crash
    Performance optimizations in storyboard mode
Performance optimizations for the " Undo " function
Improved: Opening Loading time of a project  are now faster.

Image movement was replaced in the first version of MEP 2022 with a movement effects section.

I have no idea why it was replaced nor is it the same or as flexible, but the old effects can still be made using combinations of of other effects or simple size position..

As for multi-cam. I haven't used it so if you feel it has stopped working you should tell Magix.

Ray.

Thank you for that explanation, Ray. As for the Image Movement feature, what they replaced it with is ridiculous. Terrible. Trying to mimic what was an excellent feature in v2021, is disastrous, at best. Also, I didn't mean the multi-cam feature. What I meant was, say you want to make the image on the screen smaller. You go into the effects window, and choose the feature marked size and position. Click it, and then a perforated, connect the dots kind of square surrounds the entire picture. You can then shrink the clip to the desired point using the curser. What I've done in the past was, to take the very same view that four cameras have recorded, and then shrunk them down with the now unworking feature mentioned in my original post, in a quad view, so that I can compare, set, and adjust all four cameras to shoot almost exactly alike. It's not the Multi-Cam feature. Although, I do use that when I employ four cameras during the editing process. And, I can't wait to see what changes await me, there. 😕

Hi.

The Size Position still works. Grab a corner to shrink to size then place into position.

Getting rid of the movement options may have been a coding necessity to keep hardware acceleration available to playback. I have no real idea but the fact they tried to replace it must mean something.

Hi,

As for the Image Movement feature, what they replaced it with is ridiculous. Terrible. Trying to mimic what was an excellent feature in v2021, is disastrous, at best.

I had never even noticed that it was there. I always used Camera/Zoom shot where I have more and better control. So, what did they replace the Movement feature with that is so bad? I didn't notice anything.

Why don't you just use Camera/Zoom shot?

What I meant was, say you want to make the image on the screen smaller. You go into the effects window, and choose the feature marked size and position. Click it, and then a perforated, connect the dots kind of square surrounds the entire picture. You can then shrink the clip to the desired point using the curser.

I presume that you mean that you want to make the image of the object smaller, not the screen; the screen being the Preview Monitor window, which is entirely different and is still there.

Instead of the dashed line with handles, you now have a white line with handles that do the same thing. Drag any handle inwards and the image will become smaller - same as zooming out. This is with Combined Input Fields checked. If you uncheck this, then you can distort the image using the handles. What is the problem with this?

You can still drag the image around.

If you want to zoom in, that is a bit more problematic and it is easier to do and see what is happening if you zoom out of the Preview Monitor screen. Open the hamburger menu at the top right to see how to do this if you've never done it before.

What has changed is that you can now move the anchor point, there is not rotation handle, and no zoom sliders. But rotation has been beefed up allowing 3D rotations using the Sequence of rotations XYZ box.

There are several threads about this where I explain, in detail, what these different rotations do, and also how to move the anchor point and create effects to do place the anchor point at the different nodes.

Browj2: They put some similar, but not exact movements at the bottom of the "MOVEMENTS" page.

johnebaker: I've never in 20 years of employing MEP, (Starting from 1999), have I ever had to do that. In previous updates, it would list what was being changed or corrected, on it's own, after the upload was applied.

CubeAce: That's just it. It's listed in the drop down menu for 'size and position,' but nothing happens when I click on to it. It doesn't even highlight, like the rotation or section options do. That's why I asked if the recent update had anything to do with repaired this problem. I haven't checked it after the update, as of yet. But I just finally finished re-adding and repairing all the issues caused on a huge project, that didn't copy exactly from v2021 when I updated to v2022. Which was unfair to me and anyone else that had to scramble to fix the problems caused by the new version.

However, I do appreciate all of your assistance and considerations. Thank you.

I can tell you not all templates load correctly...

I must admit that this is starting to get frustrating. Less than half of the transition templates work for me. I still lose video playback if I open the audio cleaning window. The zoom in and out buttons keep opening the window as if I right clicked on it. So annoying. Something causes the audio to not sync correctly and some video to just go black, even if I play the actual video file, and nothing will fix it. Yet if I use the same video file in a whole new project, it works fine. I have yet to figure out what causes that, but it will sure screw up a project.

Now I'm getting emails from Magix with titles saying, "Your Update Service is about to end". I'm ready to uninstall this thing and go back to the last version. It worked fine. I don't need much, but I do need it to work.

mojoaudioguru wrote on 10/12/2021, 11:03 PM

RandiRain: I have experienced the very same things. Losing the video when adjusting or cleaning the audio. But, in order to get the video portion to return, I just minimize MEP 2022+ and bring it back, and the video returns. I was hoping this recent update would repair that. It did not. I recently checked to see if all my GPU's firmwares were current, and I got something telling me my CPU, (Kaby Lake i7-7700K), is NOT compatible with the new Windows 11 OS, but that Windows will still support Windows 10 Pro, until 2025. So, my computer is now short lived. (However, it's 3 years old already, since personally building it) One of the forum gents suggested that it's my NVidia GTX1050TI SC GPU, causing all this mayhem. Outdated. I just can't win for losing. I think I'm just going to start from scratch in the winter time, and just build myself a new 'puter, and keep this one for duping and menial labor. If I wanna keep the babies in diapers and formula, I just gotta bare down and getter done. You may just have to bite the bullet, and do the same.

This is just my opinion and observations so far.

For anyone wanting to edit HD and above material that doesn't have an nvidia 4GB Pascal, Turing, or higher specified graphics card and a 4 core multi-thread CPU, then I feel the answer is yes.

The shift in the program requirements has been more extreme this time around relying much less on the ability of multi-core CPU systems and more reliant on hardware acceleration and quite a bit of vram. Normal ram requirements remain the same (16GB or above) although I'm guessing at this point that those still on DDR3 are still at a disadvantage. The writing has been on the wall in the past few releases though. Those with better graphics cards have been pulling away with better performance since the introduction of the Infusion engine although in the past anyone with an added Intel internal HD 520 or higher GPU had a fallback option. This is much less so on the present release. I can't even get a full project to run on an Intel HD 630 without it tripping out.

Setting the program to use nvidia in all options though, and providing the card is at least as described above, then there are performance gains both on playback and export. Yes there are still one or two bugs left over and a need to change some work flow patterns but it is working stably for those with the needed components.

Ray.

I agree 110% with your assessment, Jerancampy22. What troubles me is, that none of the admins of this forum has contacted Magix about these issues. Because if they had, something would have already been done about it. I sent a ticket to Magix weeks ago, and all I got was a standard automated 'try this and see if it works,' response. Which I had already tried, to no avail. I wish they would update it every 2 years. Because by the time you get used to the current version, and it's quirks, they hit you up with a new version, and you have to then go thru all the disappointments, all over again. Ridiculous.

CubeAce wrote on 10/13/2021, 2:27 AM

@mojoaudioguru @jerancampy22

What Admins?

Do you mean the moderators who are just other users?

Anyone is able to report to Magix with an issue. The moderators do not have any privileged position in that respect.

At least I never had any privileges when I agreed to moderate an earlier Fuji users site.

While I would agree the Magix advertising has much to be desired and is a minefield to those less blessed in their ability to sift through what information is important, making a correct informed choice as to whether to upgrade or not is next to impossible. It is no good blaming the software for not improving performance if the hardware is not there to enable it. Performance is always hardware enabled. Software just allows the increases in that performance to be used.

What exactly do you want the mods to report on? Eventually all software is redundant. All operating systems change to keep up with hardware releases and viral threats. Replacement software for the operating system needs new hardware to run on. If a system is older it should keep to running the software it was built for.

Most end users put this off for as long as possible. We have other bills to pay but eventually it catches up with all of us and choices have to be made.

Ray.

To All

Greetings,

When MEP 2022 first placed itself on my machine, I too was distraught, confused, annoyed, dismayed, angry and full of contempt for everyone involved with the program but I persevered.

After various bits of info from Mods and Users and a lot that I found out for myself, I can now use MEP2022 as quickly as ever I did with MEP2021 or at least it seems that way.

As I've written in what was the sticky post but is now "lost" a few pages down the forum I wouldn't like to go back to MEP 2021. That version annoyed me from day one until it's end of life on my system.

With regards to that now non-sticky(?), there was a lot of information in there that people are now not looking at, I'm sure that quite a number of the very recent posts are answered in that and similar posts.

Would be a good idea to put all the good "how to use" info, workarounds and general user info that has been posted here during the first few days of MEP2021s global life into one valuable sticky? It may diminish the number of "how do I"s, "where is...?"s, and other general ????s.

Mind you, even when those inital posts were fresh and on the the first page a lot of people appeared not to read them as they asked the same questions again and again. I'm probably as guilty as anyone for repeating a question over the years. As someone here said (Ray possibly? sorry I can't be bothered to look😌) who reads stickys? That's more than obvious with the number of Vegas Pro etc questions.

I rather think this thread has gone as far as it can!

Ray has very succinctly summarised the situation in his latest post. The 2022 version of MEP and VPX 13 both make increasing demands on the hardware on which they run. These "increased demands" have not met with "universal approval" amongst users 😱😱 but the developers clearly made the decision that the software must be able to make as much use of the latest hardware configurations as is possible. Inevitably, that means "older" hardware may struggle.

My computer configuration is in my signature - about 5 years or so ago when I built it it was pretty "good". Now, it is at least beginning to show that it is becoming not really good enough! Yes, I have met problems with VPX 13 (not so much with MEPP 2022 because I don't use it so much) and I have raised tickets with Pro Support (and always received helpful responses). At least one of those "problems" (that of the program failing to close properly) is still ongoing, being investigated by Support (it seems it actually affects only a few users so is, from the developer's point of view, rather more difficult to resolve).

As for we moderators being expected to report user problems to Magix staff, that is not our role. We are fellow-users, all volunteers, tasked by Magix to keep the forum friendly and smooth-running. Magix staff are aware of user-views (though they do not routinely post here they do, from time to time, view posts in the forum) and they are certainly aware of support tickets which users create.

I hope all the above will explain why I am now going to close this thread.
