Using 25 fps mxv screen capture file in 29.97 fps project "shimmer" problem

Hi, I am trying to use my screen capture mxv 25 fps file within my 29.97 fps project I am burning to DVD and BluRay.  I have tried using Video Effect Speed to change the frame rate of the mxv file to 50 fps, 29.97 fps and 59.94 fps to see if I can reduce a "shimmer" effect noticeable in the text labels in the attributed google earth screen capture I have made (creative commons license).  I have lots of shimmer viewing the finished DVD on a TV.  Any suggestions on how to reduce the effect of different frame rates between screen capture  mxv and my project settings (NTSC)?

Hi

. . . . Video Effect Speed to change the frame rate of the mxv file to 50 fps, 29.97 fps and 59.94 fps . . . .

That does not change the framerate of the video - only its playback speed.

. . . . Any suggestions on how to reduce the effect of different frame rates between screen capture  mxv . . . .

There is no surefire way of doing this because of conflicting issues which depend on the source you are capturing from and the capture settings.

There are several unwanted effects which can cause problems when changing video formats / framerates and they may combine against you depending on the format/framerate/video interlacing mode of the source video and the destination video.

  1. If the mxv source is interlaced video then there is a  'comb effect' which appears when the source is interlaced video and is displayed on a progressive screen, applying the de-interlace filter on exporting the video will help a little.

  2. Changing framerates introduces a form of 'juddering', eg from 25fps to 29.97 (30) fps, The effect is a result of 'pulldown' - this is the method use to increase / decrease video framerates by either duplicating or dropping certain frames in a set sequence or dropping frames.  For more in depth information see this article.

  3. The third efffect is a result of the text labels resolution not matching the video resolution such that the edges appear to shimmer - there is nothing you can do about this is the text is in the capture video.

Thanks for responding to my question, John.  Your explanations will are useful.  I want to ask, does the de-interlace filter for the mxv file get applied at the time of the screen capture (too late for me), or is it applied to the mxv clip within the project?  I am burning a project right now so can't experiment with it.
