Using Masks and the Mask Generator FX in MEP 2018

hdrechsel18 wrote on 7/14/2018, 10:52 AM

I'm not having any luck using masks in MEP 2018. I've watched the videos, followed documentation, but still can't get masks to work for me. Highlight the video clip > select the effect (in this case color correction) > load a mask (it's placed under my video clip) - but from there on in, nothing works. Am I missing a step? I'm trying to do a simple gradient. Ended up using New Blue V3 Gradient Tint - which worked for me, but I would still like to know why the masks are not working.The Mask Generator seems to do nothing as well. Has anyone had any luck with this? Thanks in advance.

Hi

. . . . nothing works. Am I missing a step? . . . .

May be, watch this clip to see if it helps

Note: I am using my own mask because some of the MEP mask effects are subtle.

The Mask Generator does work, however you do need a fairly contrasty clip to generate the mask from, here is an quick example of using a mask to change the background of a video clip.

Well that worked! I think the thing I'm missing is a better understanding of what a mask is (seldom used them in the past). It appears I'm working backwards - as this has me applying the effect to the clip FIRST, then adding the mask. I was adding the mask, and then trying to apply the effect. Thank you - that was a BIG help. I'll play around with the Mask Generator, and experiment with making my own masks (now that I know where I'm going wrong).

@hdrechsel18

Hi

I have uploaded a tutorial on using the mask generator to create a 'live' mask for replacing the background of a video clip here.

Again - much thanks. I gave it a shot - not having the same material you had to work with - but I think I have the gist of it now. Interesting application.
