Video effects curve, zoom, etc., not working in MEP MX Premium

Spirivid wrote on 6/28/2013, 11:49 AM

Hi everyone!

Quick query (which may not have a quick solution...)... FYI I am running win 7-64 on a self-built Intel Core i5 quad-core system, 16GB RAM, etc.

I am having trouble using effects curves in MAGIX Movie Edit MX Premium. This is my third version of MEP, so I'm not a total newbie...

When I select a video item in the timeline and try to draw an effects curve on it, the mouse pointer instead tries to draw some kind of dotted-line box which then disappears. I do not have the same problem when drawing audio effects curves (i.e. the green line with movable square dots/grab handles appears, as it should).

I am also finding that when trying to select areas of the video preview screen to zoom in Zoom mode, instead of drawing a box with orange grab handles, I get a section of the screen that jumps in one direction or another.

Previously I have had issues with the mouse pointer not responding once I get into zoom or effects curves. I could move it but it seemed to get stuck in the wrong mode.

Anyway, I have tried to treat the problem by downloading the latest patches, and by clearing my cache drive so that I am sure I am using the latest updated version of the MEP software. This hasn't solved my problem.

I had the same issues when working on a project a few months ago, and they are still persisting (although I did at least manage to get that project finished, vimeo, DVD, etc.). I don't do a huge amount of video editing, but it would be nice to get this sorted out as it's undermining my use of the software.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Is this a general issue, happening consistently on all new projects, including the simplest possible such as a single JPG on the timeline?

Or is it confined to a particular project?

That answer will substantially influence the approach to isolating the problem

Meanwhile, presumably you've tried obvious steps like resetting program defaults, rebooting your PC, methodically checking for conflicts with other programs, etc.

Hi Terry,

Thank you very much for your reply. At your suggestion, I have had a quick look at using these features on a single JPG - same result. This is the same for all projects.

E.g. I tried to Zoom by holding the mouse button and moving the pointer to create a selection from the source image: no box with grab handles appears. Single click on the mouse button over the image in the preview screen and a tiny "clump" of grab handles appears, but when I try to move or adjust this, the image jumps to a random selection from the source image.

"Section" and "Size/Position" seem to be okay, but will not combine with Zoom.

I still cannot draw a Zoom effects curve on the image in the timeline.

I have now tried exploring effects curves in some of the other video effects: colour correction, etc. Still cannot draw a video effects curve on the item in the timeline.

I have rebooted the PC (this was my first inclination as I have had MEP hang on me before). Not sure about conflicts with other programs but only have Google Chrome and Skype open at present (and wasn't using Chrome when I did my previous project 4 months ago, so it can't be that by itself). Have reviewed program defaults but not reset as I couldn't see any that obviously seemed to be at fault.

(On a probably unrelated note, I also noticed that when trying to change the level of "Zoom" at which I am viewing the project on the timeline, using the "-" and "+" at bottom right of the main window, sometimes I am seeing the mouse pointer as a "hand" (object selector) rather than an "arrow" (mouse pointer). Does anyone else get this bug?)

How am I doing?

Hi Jeremy

As far as I am aware you can not draw effect curves on the video track with the mouse pointer in "drawing mouse mode". This is reserved for the sound track and is tied in with automation in the Mixer.

In drawing mode the mouse becomes the hand with pointy finger you describe and other functions don't work.

Hi Jeremy,

I'm not clear about your zooming questions. So can you first confirm that the following basics are all familiar to you?

If so, please show a screenshot or two of what you are attempting and what's going wrong.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your responses to this query, and for clearing up my misunderstanding of the zoom issue. (Scenestealer - thank you!) I apologise for not getting back to you sooner - life has been very busy of late!

As I have a new project pon the go, which I want to run smoothly (only 3:23 mins of video, but it may comprise over 100 scenes), I decided to stump up for an upgrade, and am now the proud owner of MEP 2013. I am still experiencing strange things happening when using video effects such as Zoom, e.g. grab handles sometimes still appearing in the playback monitor, even when I leave the effects pool, and even when I view the playback in fullscreen.

However, this seems to be cured by toggling between "edit" and "preview" in the effects suite (just don't ask me which way it needs to be toggled...).

Everything else seems to be running smoothly.

Thanks again for all your help and advice!

Kind regards,

Jeremy.
