I'm a newbie and find both this forum and the software (Movie edit pro 2014-badic) to have a pretty steep learning curve. I'm not complaining, just commenting.
I seem to be having trouble getting any video plug-ins to work. Do any of you have a favorite package or link to same that are supposed to work with the basic MEP 2014?

Which plugins are you referring to?
Presumably you have downloaded and installed the second part of the softare - see Help, Free download and this dialog will appear:
If they are already installed then you will see the installation date. If not depending on your Internet speed they may take several hours to download and install.

I have the basic version of 2014. Sorry if that wasn't clear in my post.
I see no reference to a "second part" of the software?

The basic version is more limited, which plugins are not working?
However you can try doing a program reset - File, Settings, Reset program . . . to see if any become active.
