Video size.

Hi,

I'm new to video editing. I have numerous video clips i have recorded on my go pro. I am not sure how this has happened as i have never changed the settings, however the videos are in different sizes eg. 1920 x 1080 & 1280 x 960.

Once i have edited these into a short movie is there a way of making the whole video the same size?

This is a video i made and as you can see the start of the video is in full screen then at 1:03 the sides are cut away because the clip was shot in a different mode.

is there any way of sorting this or do i just have to make sure that i film everything in the exact same mode?

Im using Magix movie edit pro 2013.

Hi,

When you open the program with a new project, the size parameters are indicated on the startup screen similar to the image below and you can accept the default or change it to another size. This will be the setting for your project.

Here is the screen shot (I'm using Video Pro X6 - very similar to MEP, just more tools and features) with the first video at 1920x1080. If you press on E you will see your project parameters.

In your case, you imported the first video at 1920 x 1080 like I did, correct? When you went to import the second video, there would have been a message similar to this:

I selected "Do not adjust." The second video should normally import into the project correctly if it has the same proportions and resize to fill the window, again only if the video has the same proportions, i.e. 16:9. See below. (This image is rotated 90 degrees because it was shot incorrectly on a cell phone.)

However, if your second video is really 1280x960 and not 1280x720, then it does not have the same proportions as the original clip. The original clip is 16/9 = 1.7777778, the new clip is 1280/960 = 1.333333, and is thus 4:3. As a result, your second clip cannot fit into the 1980x1080 window without some borders shown on the left and right. Unless, that is, you zoom in to fill the screen, in which case you will lose some of your image at the top and bottom.

Did you select "Adjust?" If so, then your format will be 1280x960, and you will have a different problem.

To solve your problem, click on the second video clip, the one with the wrong proportions, and then click on the effects tab. Go to Movement effects, Size/position, and change the width to 1920. The height should automatically change to 1440. Note the zoom factor will change accordingly. Click on the Center button if your video is not centred. Now you can move your video up or down to get the part of the image that you want within the window. Again, you will lose some at the top and or bottom if you want the video to fill the screen.

See my example below where the image was 1440 wide x 1080 high but I wanted to fill the full screen width of 1920.

Below is the result, but part of the image gets cropped.

Nice video, looks like you had fun!

Wow, thank you for explaining that to me. I think i will have to read it a few times and try out your different methods, but thankyou for going to that effort.
