Video transfered to iPad loses audio

Taildragger7W wrote on 1/7/2015, 1:49 PM

I made a movie using Movie Edit Pro 15 plus.  I exported it to MPEG-4 video, specificall for the apple ipod, 640x648.  I get a warning that the export settings differ from the movie settings, but I have no idea what I am doing, so just click on Continue.   THe movie comes out OK and will go up on You-tube, and the converted movie can be played on my computer.  When I try to transfer it to my ipad, it loses the audio.  Video still works, but the audio is gone.  This is my first project, so I muddled through most of it, learning as I go.  This has me stumped. I have tried converting it to different formats, but evertime I transfer to the iPad, it loses the audio.  I have tried from a different computer, with the same result.  Any help or suggestions are welcome!  Thanks!

Using Windows 7.

Hi,

First, can you please clarify a few points:

1. I've never had an iPod myself but a few minutes' googling seems to imply there are at least 4 generations/versions. Which is yours?

2. Why did you export at a size of 640 x 648? I don't see that anywhere as a supported size. If yours is an iPod Classic then I gather the supported sizes are 320 x 240 or 640 x 480.

3. Which model of iPad are you using?

4. What is the pixel size of the soundless file you are trying to play on the iPad?

5. By "...I have no idea what I am doing" do you mean you're a novice and haven't made any MP4 exports before? That aside, IMO the message is very badly worded, so I'm not surprised you find it confusing! However, the bottom line is to warn you that your project settings for the movie (or 'film', which Magix also casually use) are different to those of the video you are planning to export. Typically, a different size and/or aspect ratio are the main issues.

I don't think the iPad existed when MEP 15 was released, hence the absence of any export options for it in the drop-down. I suspect we might have to clear up the basic points above before pursuing the mystery of no sound. But meanwhile l'd try these export settings:

Thanks for the answer Terry,

Here are the answers to your great questions...

1. I've never had an iPod myself but a few minutes' googling seems to imply there are at least 4 generations/versions. Which is yours?  I actuallly have a 2nd generation iPad. When I tried to export the movie, iPad was never an option, so I chose the iPod because I figured it would be the closest format to the iPad. I know that videos that I have already in my computer that I put on the iPod or iPhone also go onto the iPad, so figured it was the best solution since I didn't have any idea which of the other formats to use.  I went to the 'Export' selections, and went through each one till I found one that had iPod as a selection and chose it.

2. Why did you export at a size of 640 x 648? I don't see that anywhere as a supported size. If yours is an iPod Classic then I gather the supported sizes are 320 x 240 or 640 x 480.  The 'Export Movie' to 'MPEG-4' had iPad as a user defined size, and 640x648 was the only option for the iPod.  I was afraid that if I changed the setitngs, it would mess up other things, so just chose to go with the one I thought was closest.

3. Which model of iPad are you using?  iPad generation 2.

4. What is the pixel size of the soundless file you are trying to play on the iPad?

The properties box of the video I made is 640x480.  Data rate 1002kbps, total bitrate 1131kbps.

The audio is Bit rate 128 kbps, Channels 2(stereo), Audio sample rate 32kHz.

Yes, I have never exported MP4 videos before.  I have edited a few videos over time, but it so seldom I usually forget what I did the time before, and they usually go up on You Tube.  This is the first one I wanted to put on my phone or iPad, and is also the longest one with music background and multiple video sources.  If it were shorter, I don't think it would be such an issue, but the final 6:00 video is 48.7MB.

I don't think the iPad existed when MEP 15 was released, hence the absence of any export options for it in the drop-down. I suspect we might have to clear up the basic points above before pursuing the mystery of no sound. But meanwhile l'd try these export settings:

I think you are correct on the iPad not existing when 15 was released.  I will give the settings a try and report back. Thanks so much for your time and expertise!!!

Terry,

I was able to re-export the movie in the suggested settings.  When viewed on my computer, it was terribly pixilated and poor quality.  Audio did work on the computer, but when I tried to transfer it to my iPad using the iTunes software, I got the message "Your movie was not copied to the iPad because it cannot be played on this iPad"

So I guess my next step might be to either get a newer version of the Magix Software and that may help, or just use some of the free software and 'convert' it so that is will go to the iPad.

I thought it would be easier than this...

Thanks again, Lorraine

Hi Lorraine,

A more recent version of MEP would probably be a good investment in any case, although not necessarily resolving this issue.

But meanwhile, can you upload your troublesome MP4 (or any small non-confidential example exhibiting the same problem) to a host site (I use Dropbox) so that I can download and try it.

And/or you could indeed try converting it.  Handbrake seems well recommended, but there are others.

"The 'Export Movie' to 'MPEG-4' had iPad as a user defined size, and 640x648 was the only option for the iPod."

This still has me puzzled. I don't recall seeing any mention of iPad in the export dialogs of my dusted down MEP 15 which I ran before my previous post. Nor a 640x648 size for either iPad or iPod. Can you post a screenshot?

Terry,

I downloaded Handbrake, and that did the trick.  For some reason it doubled in size, but at this point I am not complaining.  Thanks so much for your help.
