VPX 17.0.1.32 w/AVCHD trimming and fades

gmlotkow wrote on 8/22/2019, 8:25 AM

Not new to this software, just had a summer break without having to do any editing, just getting back to it after some updates in the software. Many of you may know what I've been doing for years. I seemed to have discovered a bug with the latest update, I don't know if it has been discovered by others.

I often record hour long performances, with multiple cameras sync'd on the timeline, then fade between each track to provide multiple camera angles. My work flow was to find all the necessary views on each track, then on use the object edit tool to specify how many frames to fade in and out. Now the object edit tool does not work. I cannot type in the specified number of frames, or use the upper arrow icons in the object edit tool to scroll to the number of frames required, I usually use 30 frames, for a half second fade. If I use the pull handle on the track, I can then drag the handle to provide the transition. Once I drag the handle on the clip, I could then use the object edit tool. I could also copy/paste that effect to other objects on the timeline, but if I modify either the transition,or position of the track on the timeline, all the fades are removed from the entire project. Annoying as hell. Many of these clip do have movement actions to them, panning or zooming across the view, and that works well. When the transitions or fade disappear the movement actions remain. My work flow has been disrupted, because I always have to apply the transitions of fade as the last instruction to the project then I can render it. I can no longer apply a fade effect to the first object on the timeline, then group all the clips on the timeline, then paste effect to all of the following.

Here is a sample of a clip to help you understand my workflow. Anyone else see this problem, am I now doing something wrong?

Hi Greg

. . . . the object edit tool to specify how many frames to fade in and out. Now the object edit tool does not work . . . .

This is a known issue with MEP 2019 and is still in MEP 2020 and also now in VPX 11. I would suggest you raise a support ticket as it has not been fixed yet.

The work around is to move the fade in/out handles on the clip first, this 'unlocks' the trimmer which can then be used - a bit of a pain however it works.

Any idea how to fix them disappearing when I go back and edit the timeline?

Hi Greg

I have been doing a lot of this moving, changing transitions etc in my current project over the last week and have not seen this behaviour - yet!

Hi Greg,

I will test out the problem of losing all of the fades from a project as I didn't notice this either.

I'm camping and have very limited access to the internet, so I can't even view your video.

Here is the bug as I had recorded it:

If you raise a ticket with Magix, you can use the link to my video, if you want, and yours.

I've never recorded my screen like that, I'll have to try it. I'm glad you were able to understand my long winded description. Are you not camping to get away from this stuff?
