In case no one noticed, Travel Maps has been updated. There are still problems, but a couple of those on the bug list have been resolved.

In particular, you can now make a route going westward across the International Date Line. Before, the route would switch to eastward.

You can now add photos to points on route created using a gps file.

New problems:

  • Can't access Help manual
  • Some projects crash when selecting photos after the project has been saved and reopened
  • Question mark (?) at the bottom right, below the + -: One line on the image is in German – the one to go to Magix.com.
  • Adding photos to saved project: Not really a bug, but is problematic for the user. Create a route, add photos, save, close, open, load saved route, Photos, and you can’t select/import photos that have been used previously. The Empty Folder button cannot be selected, so you have to import a new photo (one not used in the project or even during the day without rebooting, I think). Then the Empty Folder button can be used and the photos can now all be loaded.

Remark on overall usability: I don't know how others are finding this change from the old Travel Route Animation to Travel Maps, but I like it much better. There is better mapping (satellite), icons, icons with photos, photos at waypoints, etc.

One trick that I use, since I use a GoPro Hero 5 on hikes or in the car, is extracting the GPS route to a file (GPX) and using this in TM to quickly locate where the video or image was taken. Usually, I have a lot of video clips taken along the route. I then save each as a jpg for quick reference. While putting together my project, I can quickly identify where certain video clips or photos should be located along the route by referring to the jpg for the clip.

As for getting the GPX file, a user on the GoPro forum created a couple of batch files to do this. With one of them (modified by me to just do GPX files, not other formats), you just have to drag the first video file in a folder onto the bat file and it automatically creates GPX files for all video clips in the folder.
